Prediction: Thorne will replace Chief

A bit of clarification before we head into this, no, Chief will not be replaced by Thorne for Halo 5. It would be foolish to go that route.

With that said, by the end of Halo 5, I believe that Chief is going to be replaced and Gabriel Thorne is the likeliest candidate. I’ve had this belief for a good long time now and it seems to make people uncomfortable when I bring it up. I understand why, Chief is a memorable character and fan favorite. Fans have been with him from the expanded universe novels to the games and beyond. For better or for worse, Chief is what Halo is all about and it is inconceivable that such a huge character would be absent from the lime light.

Then again, people didn’t think 343i would kill off Cortana either and yet they did. Back to the point, however. Looking at the recent trailer, we see a Chief we haven’t seen, a man broken both physically, as the armor shows, and mentally, as his attachment to Cortana’s data chip shows. Everything Chief knows is starting to crumble, Cortana is gone, Halsey has been lost, his former teammates from Blue Team are still missing, at least to him.

Consider how much 343i seem to be investing in Thorne. The content in the Limited Edition belong to him, his background has been the most brought up among Majestic, Halsey recognized the potential in him and even Thorne himself seems to desire the truth about our controversial doctor. As time goes on, I believe we will see more and more of this character.

Tying this together are some threads left over from Halo 4. The Librarian did say that Chief and Cortana are essential parts of human evolution. However, I do not believe both were the ends of her plan. Cortana’s creation seems to coincide with the idea of the Composer. She was made from the living tissue of Dr. Halsey’s brain, the Composer turns living organic matieral into AIs. Though Cortana has perished, I see her as the first step to the evolution of human artificial intelligence. Chief is more obvious. The augmentations and surgeries he underwent are being spread to more and more people. The Spartan-IVs, as of now, are likely the pinnacle of what could be the next phase in evolution.

Finally, look at the one big overarching theme of 343i’s recent Halo developments. Sacrifice. In the Forerunner novels, Bornsteller had to sacrifice everything he has ever known to become the Iso-Didact and in time he would sacrifice the galaxy to halt the Flood. Chakas would do the same and become 343 Guilty Spark, assuming a new identity, losing his past life and ensuring the Forerunner’s plans continue. Halo 4 continued that trend with the demise of Cortana, she scarified herself so that Chief could live.

Now let me try to collect all these loose ends and threads and knit you a better picture. Chief and Cortana are the beginning of humanities ascendancy, paving the way with their contributions to the digital and physical realms. However, they are merely stepping stones, Cortana’s death has hastened Chief’s likely demise as well. However, a new generation of heroes has arisen since then and one of them, Thorne, shows promise.

It may not be satisfactory to some and scary to others, but given the theme of sacrifice, it may be the next step. The reclaimation is at hand and it isn’t going to be pretty.

-Yoink- i hope not chief is the man, halo with out chief is like weed with no way of smoking it and thorn cud neva live up 2 the chiefs standards hes a -Yoink!- he got captured so easily.

So has Chief. The two are closer to each other than most people like to admit.

343 has said that Master Chief isn’t going anywhere. He was away for two consecutive games (ODST and Reach) and the fans didn’t like it. Plus don’t forget we’re in the middle of a trilogy-The Reclaimer Trilogy. Chief is not going anywhere.

Also, my theory is that Chief will get Cortana back at the end of Halo 5 and I don’t see them getting back together only for them to separated again. OR at the very least he’ll find a way to get her back at the end of 5 and actually do it in 6-just a theory.

everyone knows mc… no one knows thorne…

Chief has never been captured, thats part of what makes him so awesome. Plus he could at least take out 1 Elite in hand-to-hand combat…except maybe the Arbiter (discussion for another day)

> everyone knows mc… no one knows thorne…

Halo 5 would be the ideal starting place. After all, the Arbiter came about in Halo 2 and is now a fan favorite and much requested character.

I wish I had such faith, but honestly, they could say anything. If I recall, they denied the existence of CEA for a good long time and then, BAM, there it was. Your theory is still valid though, nothing can be written out yet.

its going to end with cortana becoming human… thats all…

He has been captured by insurrectionists and the Gravemind briefly had him in his clutches. As for Elites, one on one combat has been difficult for him. He was nearly killed by one on Gamma Station above Reach, one on the Ascendant Justice, Thel Lodamee bested him in a dual in The Package, etc.

looking back chief only gt captured in uprising and kinda gt captured by the ur didact

> looking back chief only gt captured in uprising and kinda gt captured by the ur didact

And Innies. And the Gravemind. Still, even when captured, both Thorne and Chief got themselves out of trouble.

id turn gay 4 chief lolza haha, i just want the chief 2 stay i prob wil hate halo if he goes, he has 2 die a heroric death at the end of 6

You’re in luck, that is what his voice actor wants. Personally I’d like to Chief turned into an AI…

And given to Thorne.

can u refresh my memory of when chief gets captured by innies i just finished reading all the books again i cant remember that, hope i didnt skip a chapter

> can u refresh my memory of when chief gets captured by innies i just finished reading all the books again i cant remember that, hope i didnt skip a chapter

Should be the second chapter of Ghosts of Onyx. It is early on.

tru tru just hada wee look then ur right blue team gt captured except for kurt, good memory bro

While it may make canonical sense Chief will never be replaced. He is the face of halo and brings in all the $$$ for MS, people love chief too much and MS likes peoples money too much.

Still thorne is gonna be a main character from now on.

agreeded

You posted some very interesting facts and points (and a lot of words) Cobra, and I must admit, I agree with you in most of the points. It was very interesting to see, how Thorne was a main protagonist in Spartan Ops, I noticed that too.

I am certain that Thorne will play at least a major role in future installments of this franchise. There are more than enough reasons for it, and you did mention the most. This background fits very good for that too.

The greatest thing in my opinion is, that Halsey did pass Thorne a part of the Janus Key, it is a **‘key’**lol moment at the end of Spartan Ops.

But… that he will become us? That we play Thorne instead of John? I’m not that sure about it… maybe… maybe we play both? A parallel storyline of two characters, which might lead both to halsey in the end. Who knows? John in the Campaign and Thorne in future Spartan Ops (the ‘season’ hint, I guess there will be future Spartan Ops).

I can’t really imagine playing someone else than John. Not yet. His personality gets developed now, then why shouldn’t we play him anymore, and Thorne instead? It wouldn’t make much sense… but, maybe it makes sense for 343.

Well, we’ll see. Extremely interesting prediction, I’ll keep it in mind.
I wanted to ask you something, but forgot it. I’ll post/edit it, when I remember it.

screw that. thorne is pathetic next to chief. actually, who ISN’T pathetic next to chief?

halo needs to end when chief does. this isn’t mass effect where there is an infinite number of viable protagonists - halo IS master chief and vice versa. if there is ever a halo game in the series without him count me out.
