Powerups and Animations.

Im not a fan of things getting in way of gunplay in Halo. That’s why I was never a fan of sprint, Clamber, or any of the abilities present in Halo Reach-5. Which brings me to Halo Infinite and how 343 has handled powerups. I’ve been grinding Halo 5 and I dislike how I stop shooting to look at over shield in my hand, then slam it into my chest. I’ve been killed this way and kills have gotten away from me this way.

I only bring it up in Halo 5 because we see that it is returning in Halo Infinite with the Powerup animation. I understand why its there, because no one wants to go back to older games where players were invincible while their shields overcharged. Maybe 343 could instead give the player who just picked up camo or OS a discoloration on their armor while Power effects begins. As for OS alongside the discoloration the shield charges a bit slower which gives players a chance to fight back, wound, and even kill. But taking the gun out of my hand is not the answer and I am displeased to see it return.

As for clamber I hope in Halo infinite we have a lot more ledges we can crouch jump vs clambering, that way it would incentivize players to learn some of these older Halo mechanics. As for Sprinting, 343i should give us playlists with it turned off just to see if it would have a high population. If it does make a perinate stay if not then turn it back off. I and many others have learned to tolerate sprint but I will always advocate for its removal.

To end this post off, I dislike Animations that take me out of the gunfights but some are cool and I want them to stay, like Assassinations and Swapping between gunner, driver and passenger. But those are animations that the player willingly puts themselves into. While Clamber, powerups, and sprint are animations that are part of the core mechanics. Just as Grenades, Melee, and Guns were for the more classic games.

The animation is to stop people being able to use it to instant win any fight and gives people an opportunity to win back the power up.

Right.

I wasn’t a fan of the animation to apply the power up in Halo 5, however now that we will be able to pick it up and use it as equipment there does need to be a balance to that which the animation solves.

The animation in Infinite is fine for me. It’s balanced. Get out of jail free cards would just ruin the game paired with the accessibility of being able to carry it.

Like I said in my OG post “I understand why its there” No one wants the old C.E version where you are invincible. But as an older fan I don’t like being taken out of combat. Which is why a slower recharge might be the answer here. Because It wont allow “get out of jail free” because it charges too slow to counteract being shot at; all the while you can also still shoot if you are in the middle of an engagement.

Now perhaps if it sits in your inventory for a period of time then you want to use it, okay we work with the animation. But if I’m contesting the spawn and I get there, then I should be forced into an animation if I’m using the power up instantly. At that point its the Halo 5 problem all over again. The whole point of Halo’s arena style play is to reward you for map control but not taking you out of the fight once you get to said point.

There needs to be a wind-up so that someone who knows that they’re doomed can’t just instantaneously pop the Overshield or Active Camo before they bite the dust to deny it to the enemy team.

There are a lot of actions in the game already that take time where you can’t fire a weapon. Entering or exiting a vehicle, swapping your weapon, throwing your grenades… the tradeoff for these actions is that you can’t shoot your weapon during them. The tradeoff with the power-ups like Overshield and Active Camo will be that to activate them, you have a brief time where you can’t fire your weapon. With regards to your argument about why they should give you an option between instantly using it at the spawn with no animation or stowing it, my opinion is that this would wind up with people all-too-often wasting the power-up on a fight for the spawn of the power-up when 343i likely wants people to use the power-up elsewhere during the match.
