I loved Halo Wars 1 and I’m glad that they are making a sequel. I was pretty good at Halo Wars, I wasn’t amazing but I won more than I lost. I’ve been playing the beta and three problems for me are the new power resource which adds unnecessary micro management to the game. The second problem is the upgrade system, its overcomplicated, why not just upgrade units you’ll use rather than the whole type of unit.I just want to upgrade units I’m going to use, build and army with said units and have awesome battles. Thirdly is the switch from reactors being your tech level to the base being the tech level.
I’ll talk about my problems with the new power resource first. I don’t like the introduction of power as a resource. I feel forced to get a second base because one base can’t pump out enough resources to do squat. In Halo Wars you could do well with just one base, not amazing, but you could do well. In the beta, if you don’t get a second base early on, you’ll lose. You’ll fall behind in your upgrades and building an army and before you know it your enemies are rolling on you with an army of scorpions and banshees. In my opinion the power resource adds unnecessary micro management to the game. Rather than focusing on upgrading a few units, building a mixed army and having awesome battles, I’m managing my base to try and maximise gaining both resources. To me it just feels like an unnecessary addition that hinders the flow of the game rather than add to it.
My other problem is with the upgrades. Now right off the bat you have to choose where your going to focus your upgrades: barracks, garage or airpad. Because rather than upgrading individual units and gain a health and damage boost with each upgrade like in halo wars 1, you now upgrade the entire unit type. To me this makes it more of a pain to build a mixed army like infantry and air units rather than building an army of just vehicle units from the garage. Because for the mixed army of infantry and air units to be fully effective, you’ll need to upgrade both the barracks and airpad, and then upgrade the individual units your using. Unlike in Halo wars where you just upgraded the units you wanted to use, gaining health, damage and an ability with each upgrade. Adding these barracks, garage and airpad upgrades that upgrade all units of that type is just complicating the upgrade system. Also a good thing about Halo Wars 1, when you upgraded a unit, there was a noticeable change to the way the unit looked (more armour, extra gun, a medic, etc). When I upgraded units in the beta, I really didn’t feel like there a was an improvement to the units, whether that be individual unit upgrades or unit type upgrades except with the Spartan laser and marine rocket launcher. You have to upgrade the base, so you can upgrade the unit building and then upgrade the unit, its just too much.
My last problem is with the reactors no longer being your tech level. I suppose its a failsafe against being rushed but I don’t think that was your intention. I think you changed the reactor from being responsible for tech level so you could implement the unnecessary power resource.
Overall I feel like you’ve changed a good system that worked and wasn’t complicated to a new system that’s unnecessarily complicated just for the sake of changing things or trying to “improve” upon the original. Fellow gamers, let me know if you agree or disagree with what I’ve raised and help make this the best Halo Wars it can be.
Thanks
