Please follow all guidlines so the post is not removed. I would like to see a short review from everyone good or bad on here. Please post your review of Spart Ops as a whole, episodes, ending, what worked - what didn’t etc… and what you would like different.
I think it was overall very good. The only thing that it needed was a mission where you fly a broadsword or a pelican.
Nothing more than this from me:
Gameplay and structure: 4/10
Cutscenes and story within them: 9/10
SpOps Eps 1-5 were boring…
SpOps Eps 6-10 were better…
CG cutscenes were great as well as easter eggs…
Overall I approve but completing some levels felt like a chore rather than something fun to do…
Good- Story Focus, removal of classic characters. (Master Chief and Cortana primarily.)
Shows the progression of the universe. Infinity as a ships strength and capability to single handily handle itself in hostile air from enemy ships. Spartan-IV armor bays etc.
Introduces new characters entirely. Majestic, Roland, Crimson, Glassman, Gek, Jul.
Shows more of the Spartan-IVs, and the new characters. Primarily the Spartans and Halsey.
Had a more interesting villain then the Didact, who actually managed to get away while being somewhat successful in his objective.
Bad- Repetitive missions and CGI cutscenes that took away from the tradition in game cutscene, removing players from what is going on and story progression. Having debriefings and cutscenes with Crimson in them would have been much more relevant for the player and their interaction in what is going on.
Enemy amounts. With this being in canon, and the ending of Jul 'Mdama and his fleet fleeing, there are a lot of enemy covenant standing around that didn’t seem to make it. Especially with the Lich still there. While I can dig Chapter Five’s Covies. (Fanatics, does make sense.) The amount of Covenant forces left behind is too much. Not to mention the large amount of Covenants that have been killed through out the series.
Again, lack of diversity and somewhat small levels. Larger vehicle focused missions or actual stealthy assassination missions could have helped.
I know Halsey isn’t new. But don’t really want to go into too much detail. So meh.
I generally like most of the missions, particularity those that manage to supply enough UNSC, Covenant, and Forerunner ammo/weapons so that people can easily continue with the weapon they started with, without having to switch after every encounter.
Seriously, I HATE the missions that force a different faction’s weapons on you, like the Challenge, where there’s ONLY Forerunner weapons to use. Ep6Ch1 is the only exception, though.
Again, whenever there’s a mission that allows the player to play how they want, it’s usually very fun.
There is a bit of a disconnect between the CGI cutscenes and the missions through, but 6-10 handles that issue better than 1-5 did. For example, the Infinity is invaded, so Crimson goes and help. Halsey is kidnapped by Jul and Jul escapes, so Crimson investigates her whereabouts and learns a pretty interesting lore bit: “Not all Humans are Reclaimers”. However, would’ve been nice if Crimson was mentioned a LOT more.
Roland: “Spartan Thorne AND Fireteam Crimson have been detected alive on Requiem.”
Glassman: “According to these maps Majestic AAAAAAND Crimson found,”
Really, it wouldn’t have been that difficult to at least make it feel like we made an impact in the CGI cutscenes. Also, I don’t care for how often they try to make us laugh during the missions. I’d prefer character development over comedic relief anyday.
Funny enough; I tend to prefer the missions over the CGI Cutscenes. Mostly because I feel like the sub-par writing is far more apparent in the cutscenes.
Although, while I’m sure that there are multiple larger flaws beyond the small ones that I’ve listed, I honestly cannot complain. At least, as far as the missions are concerned.
What people don’t seem to realize is that Spartan Ops Season 1 is free DLC. 343 gets nothing in return for putting in hours and hours of work into this expanded Campaign for us. Some people like to point out that a Gold subscription is required to play Spartan Ops, but that’s like saying that it should be better because they pay for the internet and electricity bills. The profits made from Gold accounts don’t go to 343.
Cinematics - 9/10
Story - 8/10
Gameplay - 7/10
Good Way to Earn XP on Legendary with Fast Track and Double XP - 12/10
I never feel like going back to play a Chapter though
Story and cinematics were awesome. The gameplay is alright but a good way to gain XP and it was free.
I actually found it to be a good addition to the Halo Universe. I absolutely loved the story unfolding, I admit though the story started a bit too slow for my taste but when it picked up, it picked up.
Gameplay wise I could forgive the repetition in the areas we went to because most of the time we found a new area of the map we didn’t have access to before or there was a story reason for going back. However the lack of variety in the covenant enemies (oh boy MORE Elites with Fuel rods) hurt the episodes where they were the main faction we were fighting (the elites using promethean weapons was an interesting touch though).
If 343 can take what was good about Spartan Ops and improve on what was not then I wouldn’t mind paying for continuation.
