Post war UNSC fleet classes

Good day fellow Spartans,

These ideas for the classes of a post war UNSC fleet is both a mix of in universe ships and created classes. Similarly, how these ships would be operated in the fleet, their payload, compliment and capability will also be a mix of fact, speculation and my own reimagining. This will be my first post and will be about the fighting ships, if it is received well, a second will be on the support ships and finally the secrative major classes which make up ONI fleet. Happy to have any feedback from you all as I do enjoy speculating about fleets. Boring I know ha. So without further delay…

The UNSC fighting fleet consists of 10 classes of warships, 6 classes of support ships/stations, while ONI operates 4 classes of stealth ships. The fighting fleet is broken down with these classes;

INFINTY class. Proposed x3, 8.7km ships of this class, headed by the flagship UNSC Infinity, they act as single mass deployment platforms and command ships, easily capable of garrasioning a small system on its own. Each ship operates within one of the three teirs of UEG 15 lightyear defensive sphere of controlled space, or leading UEG/ONI directed expeditions for forerunner worlds and tech caches.
This delta version of the Infinity class has been significantly lengthen from its base model, incorporating technologies and lessons learnt from the human covenent war to the most recent created uprising. These include further improved SMACs, installation of Shango directed energy batteries, and a hybrid Forerunner/A.I. matrix. An additional two docks for underslung frigates or destroyers was built in, increasing the class indigenous fleet size and thus punch.

TRAFALGAR class. Named after the most famous Punic supercarrier UNSC Trafalgar, these 4.2km ships are used as intermediary between the Infinity class and the smaller ships of the fleet. Designated as fleet carriers for mass single craft deployment and battle space control ships, a role bolstered by the ships own 3 underslung frigates or destroyers. They combine the role of the EPOCH and PUNIC classes before them. Often heading expeditionary forces to restablish/expand UNSC presence in previously lost or newly discovered regions of space. A dozen of these ships are proposed with x2 in service.

POSIDEN class. Short of a kilometre long, these light carriers are out tonned by all of their predecessors, however they make use of all of the post war technologies, including a pair of Mark III Shango directed energy batteries as its primary weapon. Their design and intent is based on a doctrine of rapid strike fleet deployment.
Unlike the larger carriers, Infinity and Cutter classes, which have dedicated forges for construction of single craft, vehicles and a bottomless source of ordinance, Posidens have large, modular sections for holding tailored air and ground engagement groups and their related stores, dependant for quick reaction within their sector. Currently over 80 of this class are in service with the UNSC with scores more planned.

CUTTER class. Named after the fabled captain of the Spirit of Fire, these 2.7km ships serve like their predecessors as Orbital Assault Ships. They form the hub for planetary deployment of ground forces and nerve centre of a strike fleet atmospheric units. Improved with post war technologies in fabrication and design, ensure the ships dedicated forges can convert raw materials into tools of war in short order. While enhanced sensors, weapon systems, and series of modular deployment bays, ensures that a single Cutter class can support multiple planetside engagements at any time.

VINDICATION class. These 2km battleships are dedicated to counter enemy capital ships, building from all the experiences gained during the war and perceived future threats. This class houses a set of SMACs like those used by the Infinity class and ODPs along with a comprehensive suite of mini MACs, heavy coil guns, Shango directed energy turrents, oversized missile batteries and CIWS. It’s hanger is small for its size, used to hold it’s dedicated UCAV squadrons. The drones engage in long range ECM warfare and swarm attacks. A small ODST strike force, it’s dedicated armoury and related strike transport also are based in here. It houses two ordinance forges to keep it’s weapon batteries well stocked in a fight.

AUTUMN class. These form the bulk of the UNSC ship to ship fighting fleet. Build upon the exploits of the upgraded Halcyon class Pillar of Autumn, these 1.5 km heavy cruisers are primarily used as escorts for the larger capital ships and form the teeth of any strike fleet with their twin series IX heavy MACS and coligun/ missile batteries. It also possesses a series of large modular deployment bays for ODST and marine airdrops and hanger for supporting strike and transport craft.

IROQUOIS class. Named after the destroyer which executed the now famed Keyes loop, the Iroquois class fleet destroyer is a blend of the Halcyon light cruiser and earlier Halbert class destroyer. At 737 meters, it sports pair of MACs, a Mark IV heavy MAC primarily for anti ship engagement supported by a lighter Mark II for delivery of smart ordinance, supply pods, drones and engaging lighter targets. As with many other ships in the fleet, modular mission bays to house tailored air and ground forces are fitted to allow for greater mission flexibility.

STRIDENT class. Build in the hundreds, these 575 meter frigates form the backbone of the UNSC fleet along with the Anlace class. It’s powerful MAC, weapon batteries, energy shielding and operations bay make them potent escorts and ideal for enforcing the rapid strike ship doctrine used to combat ‘bushfire’ engagements within and on the edges of UEG space.

ANLACE class. This frigate class is greatly unique in many ways. It is the smallest frigate class ever used by the UNSC at only 404 meters in length. It’s hull is adapted for atmospheric actions, though it’s effective in ship to ship battles. It also is the first ship class employ a directed energy weapon as its primary weapon, with its MAC used in a secondary role along with its missiles in support of ground forces or ship attacks. It’s mission bay consumes a large portion of the ships mass and is almost exclusive in support of planetary ground and airborne actions.

GLADIUS class. Operating as interdiction and patrol corvettes, these are the smallest class of warship in the UNSC navy. Outgunned by many ships, they rely on their extensive sensor and tracking suites, low profile and high speeds to track and thus avoid larger hostile ships. Squadrons of these corvettes are often gifted to worlds loyal to the UEG, due to their ease of construction while offering a cost effective deterrent against privateers and mauraders. They have become favoured class of UNSC special operation/ planetary teir one security units for their extensive, comprehensive sensors, compact mission bay, which is spacious enough for a well assorted armoury and fast strike vehicles and the heavy, yet precise firepower it can bring to bare in support of said teams, without breaking the bank in cost like an ONI prowler.

Will post more on the remaining fleet classes according to the feedback. Feel free to help critic and ask questions about the ideas about the fleet.

Not bad but i have a few issues i spotted in ur breakdown so far…
I cant speak for the other classes but the Infinity is 5.7km long…
Link provided here.
Not trying to nit-pick but please double check you’r ship specs for future posts.
If you want, I’d be more than happy to help you with this venture as I’m currently trying to learn more about UNSC ships for a project I’m working on.

Sure, I would be happy to help and provide ideas and information on the UNSC fleet and speculated tactics. I am aware of the actual length of the Infinity class, my version is a refit variant which explains the increased size and additional weapons and sensors.

Sure, I would be happy to help and provide ideas and information on the UNSC fleet and speculated tactics. I am aware of the actual length of the Infinity class, my version is a post refit variant , set after the created uprising, which explains the increased size and upgraded weapons and sensors which would have been installed.

My idea for the timeline and ideas for the ships are set in the model that the UNSC is in a cold war mindset with the fleet, quickly processing as much information and technology as possible to create a capable platform. One thing I wasn’t too keen on is CUTTER class, it seemed top fan service based, ideas I had for the class were either the name of a god or goddess of the sea and shore or either famous amphibious assaults.

Thoughts?

Very well lol.
Its a solid idea, and truth be told when i saw the IVs for the 1st time, the Infinity, and the opening cinimatic for H4s Spartan Ops. It gave me the feeling that, that a cold war approach is exactly what was going on with the UNSC as of late.
That said the Cutter class is a good name, always enjoyed the character, seemed like a good man and a strong leader to me. In naming the class after him its not suprising that it would happen. Many nations in the past and present have named ships of various classes and tonnage after people of great and supposed import.

Also to add to your fleet of Capital and heavy ships i have 2 for now…

The Asgard Class Assault Super Carrier -
Similar in dimensions as the Infinity class, however she is half again wider to allow up to 2 Autumn Class Cruisers to link up (1 at each flank) with the vessal in addition to up to ten Strident class frigates birthed with in the ship towards the bow.
She features one of the strongest shield matrices known to man.
A plethora of weapon systems, Heavy MACs, mass drivers, missile batteries, deck guns, etc.
Munitions, shelter prefab (Bases), weapon, and vehicle foundries.
Large compliments of Fighter, M/S.O.E.I.V., and transports and enough of the corresponding bays to handle them with ease.
Thousands of ground troops for extended military campaigns.
She was designed as a Planetary Assault Ship, if you couldnt tell lol.

The Valhalla Class Super Battleship -
Although i havent spent as much time on this ship class as i have the Asgard class, I was designing her to be a Fleet killer, shes roughly 10-20% shorter than the Infinity Class with enough guns, shielding, and thick -Yoink- armor to crush whatever shes up against.
She also has a small compliment of fighter craft and Marines aboard to aid her in her endeavors.

Like you I had trouble naming these classes as well as a few ships there of…

I like the different classes that you guys are coming up with.

Agreed, if 343i explored more of the cold war setting created with halo 4 and the kilo trilogy, it would have made things more epic, especially with fleets and space battles. As for the class name thanks, as I said wasn’t sure about it being too fan service.

Your Asgard class definately brings the pain not just with its own indeginous firepower but 2 Autumns in tow as well…wow. I would say you wouldn’t need the Infinity class if you had that, however the only way I would see such a ship assisting is if humanity somewhere in the war had a Midway moment against the Covenant that turned the tide, so much so that the UNSC began assaulting their worlds in force.

Valhalla class sounds like the Vindication class, a dedicated battleship. That I could see the UNSC fielding post war, simply from all the lessons learnt from the war and the desire to not easily be defeated again.

Thank you
I admit her initial need was during the war and i wanted to use her to take back worlds that had been taken but not glassed. Then when we gained enough momentum we would hit them on their home front as they did ours.
I had also initially 4 Autum Class Cruisers as well as the 10 Strident class Frigates but with the dimentions i currently am using this wouldnt work, not unless i made her bigger all around… which im seriously considering even if its just to have the 2…
Although sadly the more i do the math on how i want her designed, the closer im getting to the point where i have to rework the dimensions of the Asgard class.
Which to be is ok if still a pain because she is still in concept.

Good similarity to the Vindication class though i couldnt find very much information on her specs…
The Valhalla Class is definitely a ship with battles of attrition with a larger number of enimy ships in mind.
I will admit she has 6 heavy MACs on her (4 at fore, 2 at aft), aswell as a large compliment of DEWs in addition to the abundance of mass driver networks, missile batteries, deck guns, etc.,

The organic fleet you have attached to the Asgard class is already is more than enough to dominate most engagements it gets into, not excusing the fact more ships will also be in support. So my humble opinion is she just needs further tech upgrades as the class is refined.

There isn’t much concrete on the Vindication beyond it classed as a battleship. It’s for that reason I gave it the same grade of SMACS as the Infinity class.
I was going for either x2 SMAC in the centre spine, a pair of Mark IXs Heavy MACs on the port and starboard sides. This would mean it can engage at least 3 dedicated capital ships to its front and likely defeat them but the port and starboard sides would rely on the coil gun/ missile batteries and CIWS for the flanks and rear. So more for lighter targets, overwhelming broadside targets or finishing off a SMACs target.
Or x3 SMAC in a triangular configuration in the centre, with either Mammoth grade Mini MACs or turrented Mark II light MACs/ Mark III Shango directed energy batteries fitted in super firing twin turrents on the port and starboard sides. These would be faster firing than the first variant, meant more for lighter targets or finishing off a SMAC target. It gives the class a tremendous forward firing ability, however in being turrented, means they could support the heavy coil guns/ missiles batteries and CIWS providing flanking fire along with its combat roll and other manuvers.

Boom sticks aside ships should have a very aggressive or tailored electronic warfare capabilities. These would mess with guidance of enemy weapons, lengthen the time for target lock, jam comms all while a smart AI or collection of dumb ones, are hacking the ship to disable core systems or even vent atmosphere. I would say cruisers and battleships have the most aggresive capability as they would be in prolonged contact with hostile ships. Frigates and destroyers are shoot and scoot ships, so focus more on a jamming detection and guidance leading up to and immediately after an attack. While Carriers, Assault ships and corvettes are more for tracking and guidance boosters for a fleet as they would be more stand off ships/ glass cannons. Infinity class being a command ships have the full array of abilities.

In my opinion, on the Valhalla class the 6 MACs should definitely mix them between SMACs and Heavy MACs, that way the power draw is varied and it doesn’t dominate too much of the ship. However it is definately a battleship with the firepower it can bring to bare, how big is this class though?

This is the second part as promised on expanding on the UNSC fleet. These two posts will be on the supporting stations and ships which keep the fleets fighting as well as assisting in expanding UEG influence. It will be split in two, one will be on stations while the other will be on ships. Again feedback is welcomed.

Anchorage orbital support station have 3 variants;

Alpha version
This type is the largest at 9.3km long, 4km wide and 6km high they serve as Orbital command and control platforms for key and core UNSC worlds or marshalling platforms at points in space. As such it requires x3 slipspace drives to transport it as a single unit, while x5 reactors provide power to the platform. Capable of docking corvettes and prowlers in large internal hangars along with every type of single craft, frigates, destroyers and cruisers in one of x12 adjustable underslung docking cradles with large capital ships any of the x6 external docking ports, every ship in the fleet can be accommodated, repaired, refuelled and rearmed in short time.

An alpha platform carries it’s own dedicated fleet of darters for everyday transport of personnel and material, while squadrons of Pelican, Condor, Broadsword/Katana and Scythe single craft provide tactical strike and defence. Corvettes or frigates can be attached to form a defensive force if deemed necessary. The platforms have x2 hardpoints for mounting SMAC defence guns as well as boasting a network of CIWS and heavy coil guns for defence against attacking single craft, or boarders. It has multiple barracks for housing navy/air force crew, marines defenders or ODST, ONI and Spartan strike teams. It comes equip with strategically placed auto medical stations and surgeries, CiC/ops rooms, armouries and various compartments to support crew over an extended period.

Beta version
These 5.2x2x3.1km betas are often employed as dedicated platforms for ship construction, utilising large numbers of Charlie cradles, defensive bastions for local battle space management and orbital garrison for defence forces against potential planet side raiders or as support platforms for processing planet resources, dedicated medical stations, space hubs for ‘reforming worlds which were glasses during the war and large R&D stations. They typically they only mount Rampart along with Spitfire coil guns and CIWS for defence, with Mini MACs only fitted if deemed necessary. Their hangars and docking abilities vary depending on the configured role, but they are capable of housing squadrons of single craft for varied roles.

Delta version
The smallest of the anchorage platforms at 3x1x1.5km, they often are deployed as scientific research stations, remote early warning and listening posts or for lesser importance/ assuming military installations. Two hangars service the station with a single docking cradle used to accommodate ships. Defence is limited to whatever craft are capable of combat on the station and small network of CIWS.

Bourtange Orbital Defence Platform
At 1.7 km high and 708 meters wide, this is the latest iteration of ODP for defence of key worlds within UNSC space. It utilises the CM-09E SMAC as its primary weapon. This variant was developed from post battle reports and technologies gained following the New Phenoix incident. The Echo type allows for the successful engaging of more exotic potential targets as well as defeating any known aggressor. To increase the survivability of a platform, several new features have been included. These included a pair local reactors to provide supplementary charge to the main gun in event planet side generators being compromised, though penetrative capability at range is notably reduced. On-board reactors provide power to the platform’s energy shielding, which aside from aiding in defence, also serves to contain the magnetizing effects from SMAC firing. This allows for a more extensive range and amount of close in gun and missile batteries to be installed to protect against hostile strike and boarding craft. Similar to its predecessor, it has hangars for tactical craft/ cargo darters and two adjustable ship docking clamps, capable of accepting ships up to cruiser tonnage. Internally the platforms retains the spacious, modular layout they are known for, with installation of hard and soft internal automated defensive systems to aid the 117 marines in repealing boarders.

Plinth class mobile fleet refit platform

The successor to the Cradle class fleet repair platform, the Plinth class is aimed to serve as a mobile, forward deployable refit and repair platform for a new generation of UNSC ships as well the ships of allied former covenant races. At over 10km long it can accommodate any ship either in UNSC or S.o.S fleets on one of two configurable docks. These can be split into as many as ten individual docks, x5 each side for smaller ships, with x4 ships, two above and two below, or combined, according to dimensions for larger capital ships. Scores of teams of EVA engineers and swarms of AI controlled weaver drones, carry out complex ship repairs, while one of the platforms x5 forges turn raw materials into sheets of plating, complex components, munitions and modules, while recycling salvaged parts. A shield matrix is installed to absorb crash landings from badly damaged ships or if ever engaged prevent critical damage to allow the platform to escape. The matrix can be locked to allow the platform to be used as a shield against a concentrated volley of hostile fire, however this can destroy over 90% of its capacitors which will need to be rebuilt, making this a single use, emergency tactic. It only has the most basic suite of CIWS and mass drivers to defend itself, instead relaying on the fleet it’s attached to for protection. A small hangar is fitted to the front to dock Pelicans or fighters while multiple docks are fitted near forges and docking arms for darters to deposit cargo and supplies.

Grant class rapid support ship
Based on the hull of the Anlace class frigate for exceptional control in atmosphere, the Grant class is meant to be able to bring supplies from rifles to rations and everything in between quickly to where it’s needed. With all but the most basic defensive and combat systems installed, less armour and most internal space allocated to the transporting of cargo, they have become one of the most effective tools, yet unsung heroes of UEG recolonization post war. A small hangar is available for docking shuttle craft aside from material cargo, a Grant is capable of transporting 250 personnel in stacked cryo pods if used to forward deploy or ‘re enforce a given planet and is crewed by 24 who have separate more ‘personalised’ quarters.

If configured for battlefield medical evacuation, a Grant is redesignated as the De Galard class. It embarked crew swells to 44 when including medical staff. With haulage bays being replaced by station grade surgeries and automated medical stations. It is also capable of carrying 130 critical casualties in single man life support pods and 80 medical cryo pods for lesser wounded personnel. The hanger is larger when compared to the Grant configuration. This allows for a dozen Dustoff evacuation drones, 4 Medevac Pelicans, 2 M.E.R.T Condors and a small assortment of medical vehicles to be carried.

Bounty class fleet support ship.
Like the Grant, the bounty is based on a serving class of warship. In this case, the Autumn class heavy cruiser, with its main MAC and most weapon and combat management systems removed in order to accommodate storage of fuel rods, munitions, pallets of deconstructed vehicles and equipment. The modular deployment bays, known as hell’s waiting rooms are largely replaced by an industrial grade assembly line for the fabrication of sensor masts, gun barrels and shaping the pre cut slabs of Titanium A armour stored within the ship. One bay is fitted with a compliment of weaver construction drones for fitting newly made parts and transfer of stores along with the x3 Darters which are housed in a separate bay. Two or three Pelicans may also be carried in the hangar to increase ferrying capability. They are crewed by 180 and an A.I. Due to their fleet role they aren’t fitted to ferry large amounts of personnel and usually are fitted with more than 100 cryo pods. They are armed with x4 Rampart defence guns, x6 Spitfire coil gun batteries and close in defence guns and missile systems. They are usually deployed in two -four ship pods, dependant on their operating space or alongside Plinth class platforms to form a powerful support fleet that can only be rivalled by stations and core colonies.
