Evening all! I’ve had this theory in my mind for ages since I started writing some fan-fiction on my own custom Spartan-IV Fireteam(s) (I currently have Trident, Crossbow and Fox) and researching on the names of the other Fireteams established by 343 Industries.
One thing to clarify first, I do not have any issues of Halo: Initiation, as I cannot obtain them in deepest, darkest Wales. Much to my despair, so some stuff may go against set canon now.
The theory I have goes that with each new “generation” or “class” of S-IVs, their Fireteam names are created under a specific theme.
So one iteration of S-IV Fireteams were code-named on colour shades, so thus we have:
Crimson (Red)
Castle (Grey/Gray)
Ivy (Green)
Domino (Black + White?)
Shadow (Grey/Black?)
Majestic (Blue)
Forest? (Green)
Then perhaps there is weapons:
Lancer
Talon
Sword
Tower?
Animals:
Horse
Rhino
Wolf
Natural:
Mountain
Avalanche
Forest?
And finally some I’m not too sure on what theme they’d be named after (any ideas/theories would be welcomed):
Sydney (possible link to where ONI is based?)
Apex
Switchback
Kodiak
So, what do you think folks, a viable theory perhaps on the naming of S-IV Fireteams? I’m curious as to know what your opinions are, so please do reply and me know what you think.
17 out.
> Forgot Castle
They’re up the top with the Colour shades, but they’d also fit into weapons in a tenuous way too…
It’s worth mentioning that both Sword and Castle are the names of ONI bases.

Yup valid point.

Shoot I completely forgot about that! That would certainly link in with Fireteam Sydney as well…
Thanks for flagging that one up AlphaBenson!

No problem! If the teams are truly named after ONI bases, then perhaps there’s a Chawla or Lisbon team somewhere.
However, since only three team names fit the bill, I can’t help but think of that quote from Ghosts of Onyx. “Do the AIs name themselves, or does someone assign them a name?”
My friend in the Army wanted his unit to be designated “Dirty Bird”, but it was rejected since “Dirty” could be confused with “thirty”. For security reasons, he obviously didn’t tell me his unit’s ACTUAL designation. This leads me to believe that either the Spartans themselves come up with the callsign, the higher ups assign them one, or perhaps a bit of column a column b.

Hmm, I wonder if they’ll get a mention in future Halo content/literature? Maybe in Karen Traviss’ final book in her trilogy?

I think with the Fireteam callsigns/codenames, it’d be hard to imagine ONI not giving the names as it seems their style to come up with code names etc rather than have a team make it up themselves.
With the Spartans now being autonomous though, perhaps the Spartans do name their own Fireteams, perhaps based on a specific theme as I suggested earlier?
And off-topic, I believe Smart AIs name themselves based on their personality. Not sure about Dumb AIs though.
Well, as far as Kodiak is concerned, it could be named after the community of Kodiak in Alaska on Kodiak Island or named after the Kodiak bear.
With so many things, I doubt there is a specific naming pattern.

Oh you big party pooper
Good chance your right however

Especially since there could be anywhere from 50-75 Fireteams on Infinity alone, since the ship’s armor bay can hold 300 Spartans. This is all based off of the assumption that the Infinity would bring its A-game to Requiem Round 2, though.
So far, the only pattern to the naming of Spartan teams seems to just be a single word, like Wolf, Sword, or Crimson.

A man can dream though, a man can dream…
I hope that they do provide some form of reason one day, just to solve this niggle in my head in regards to naming Fireteams.
