In my hunt for accurate lore outside of the books and games, in this instance the pursute of information on the precursor race, a question came to mind.
Could they still exist?
Bare in mind Im fully aware that in a way they do in the form of both their remnant technology that was previously mistaken for Forerunner tech. Such as the Domain and in the form of the Flood.
In our galaxy…
However in some stories it explains that the Precursor race is both quasi/trans-dimentional/Universal( wasnt really sure hiw best to word that…) And an extragalactic Civilization.
So with that in mind, could they still exist elsewhere? And do they know what happened in the milky way?

If any are alive they’re in suspended animation is what I remember reading, and they were basically the creators of everything so they probably know what’s going on in every galaxy

As a race that exists outside of the standard space-time continuum, I can’t imagine them not still being around as incorporeal beings. I believe we have direct evidence of this when after the Forerunner defeat of humanity, and humanity’s subsequent de-evolution, humanity hyper-evolved most of the way back towards their former states, and the Forerunners had no plausible explanation for how that could have happened, though because they believed the Precursors were gone, they didn’t even consider that as a possibility.
And judging by the Flood’s actions, how interactions with it repeatedly improve humanity’s chances of attaining the Mantle (either by teaching them humility, denying them access to a technology that would lead them astray, or by improving their standing in the galaxy relative to the other sentient races), I believe the incorporeal Precursors are still calling the shots.
That said, I don’t think “where” is the correct question for beings who exist beyond the realm of space-time.
For a “species” that can create multiple forms of life, manipulate the universe’s fabric to make structures and turn themselves into dust, I’d find it hard to believe that all the precursors died after the Forerunner’s killing spree. More likely the precursors that seeded the Milky Way were just a small group of the larger population that also create life all over the universe for whatever weird reason.
and besides…
… the forerunners managed to survive the flood and losing the entire empire and the domain access. Yeah its just 8 of them (Bornstellar, the new Librarian and I think a few others came with them after turning the domain back on to repair itself) left on a planet somewhere living without technology, but hey thats survival… unless they let themselves die out (I don’t know what year the short story about this takes place so I guess they may be dead by 2552).
Thanks guys
Another question occured to me as i read the comments
Does anyone think that they would eventually return?
I believe halo: Warfleet stated that any remaining active precursors sunk below space-time to different realms.

Could see them appearing as a small handful to more formally give humanity the Mantle and forgive remaining forerunners. This would likely be at the end of the series when human, forerunner, and every other known race up to that point have united.

Maybe if they deem Humanity finally worthy of the mantle. Maybe they would actually come up to us and tell us what its about and the responsibilities of governing the universe (since we haven’t done governing on such a large scale since the ancient humanity era and the UEG is a mess). Otherwise they may just be the flood 100% and not care anymore and are technically already back in the galaxy. Or they’ve deemed the Milky Way a bad spot in their plans of creating life, don’t like the results and so will avoid it for as long as possible.
Thanks again guys
You’ve all been awesome
