If you read The Ghosts Of Onyx
— If I am not mistaken ( and I may be ) —
There is a section in the book the describes the Onyx( I think it is the element “Onyx” or it looks similar to some type of Obsidian ) as Being a Black Stone with some color Variance too it. As if the colors of the spectrum were trying to Get through a type of Brilliant element that is Coal-like in appearance.
The massive structures at the end of the Book is made of this substance.
Looking through the Halo 4 trailer Vidoc I found several instances of what appears to be the element “Onyx”.
If you look at the screenshot I included ONYX ELEMENT.jpg you can see it in the lower right hand corner. It almost looks like a form of black Petrified rock.
I don’t know what this means but I think at the least we can expect some cool environments that are similar to the ones described in Ghosts of Onyx.

Since Onyx ( the planet ) is Presumably Destroyed I think we can expect this substance/element to be on a different forerunner world with similar architectural styles.
I havn’t read any of the last 5 books or so but maybe some of you other guys that have could piece together some snippets of the environment descriptions so we can get an idea of environments in the books that 343i might pull inspiration from for Halo 4.
What I wanted to get at Is that I hope 343i continues to integrate more of the Halo Novel Fiction where appropriate especially in things like the environment and certain Combat situations that could really ad some “whoophh” to the game.
So far the Concept art has been pretty pleasing regarding that, but we’ll have to see how it turns out in game.
