Possible Assault substitute: Base Attack

As we all know, Assault has been removed from Halo 4’s Custom Games (whether we will see it in the future is unknown). Some people were let down by this, as Assault may have been one of their favorite games, or perhaps preferred it over CTF. In fact, it was used to create one of the most beloved of Custom Games: Grifball.

But what is done is done, and if one cannot get the real deal, a substitute may do. For this, I have made up a gametype called Base Attack. It requires a bit of setup, but nothing too difficult that will prevent even the newest of Forgers from building it.

So here’s the details of how this works:

1. The gametype running off of this is Extraction.
2. There are two teams, each with their own base (may be doable with more teams/bases though this has not been tested).
3. Teams will go to each others bases, and try to extract (or blow up) the base.
4. When a player successfully extracts a base, they score! Most points wins!

Simple, right? But how does one make this possible? Well here is how it’s done:

1. Start up Forge, load up Extraction, and start.
2. Make two bases, and put up two Extraction points with two different numbers.
3. Make one (number 1) Defender, and the other (number 2) Attacker.
4. Make spawns and spawn zones for each team, and label them for Extraction (one for defender, another for attacker). Place them at the bases.
5. Save the map, and you’re done with the forge part!

Perhaps you’re wondering “Well why set up the extraction points like that?” Like CTF, teams cannot score their own objective, and therefore must attack the opposing team’s objective while defending their own.

But now about the gametype, as you have to set this up properly or this may backfire:

1. Go to War Games, Custom Game.
2. Select Extraction, then select Game Options.
3. Set the Score to 1, and the number of rounds to an odd number (1, 3, or 5 for example).
4. Go to Extraction Options from the Game Options. Set Active Sites to 2. Set Arming Time to 10 seconds. Set Extraction Time to Instant. Just in case, set Conversion Time to 15 seconds (max).
5. Save the gametype by pressing Y, and name and describe your game.

Now test it out, and it should workout something like an Assault-variant.

How about a One-Bomb variant? Well I did a twist on this, and I think it works a bit better, but I will give both as to cover my bases.

For the One-Bomb based game:

(Warning: I have yet to test and see if teams switch sides during this, so testing is still needed for this variant!)

1. Load up your Assault gametype made previously, and go to Game Options.
2. Change number of rounds to an even number (I suggest 4).
3. Go to Assault Options in Game Options menu, and set Active Sites to 1.
4. Save as New Gametype, and rename/describe so as to be able to tell apart!

In essence, this should play like One-Bomb from previous Halo games, and could be great for those building Asymmetric maps!

But there is one gametype I made that I think works great with this. Similar to One-Bomb, there is only one base at a time, but once a base is captured, defending and attacking teams switch roles…in game! This can really mix things up, and the once-defenders can turn the tide on the once attackers if they’re not ready!

How to set up Base Attack Switch:

1. Load up the previous Assault game made, and go into Game Options.
2. Set Score to Unlimited. Set the Number of Rounds to 1.
3. Go to Assault Options in the Game Options. Set Active Sites to 1. Set New Site Delay to 5 seconds. Make sure that Site Location is set to Sequential.
4. Save as New Gametype, rename/describe so as to be able to tell apart!

And there you go! Easy 1, 2, 3!

Now for some Q & A!

Q: Do you have a map and gametype already made?
A: Sure do! Just look up the gamertag: ACRavenXA26483
The map is Crater, and the gametypes are labeled Base Attack.

Q: Are you the first one to make this?
A: Not sure. As far as I know, yes, but if someone has already done so, please feel free to link some info so some proper credit can be given!

Q: How do I forge Extraction exactly?
A: Watch this!

Q: How about Neutral Bomb?
A: Unfortunately I do not know if this can be done, nor do I think it can be done. If someone finds out, I’ll update the OP!

Q: Why is it not possible to “disarm”?
A: Due to how Extraction works, “disarming” the “bomb” will convert it instead, thus giving the opposing team the point for blowing up their own base :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope this is both helpful and fun for you all!

It’s an okay substitute for what we’re given.

But the fact we have to do this is unacceptable, we need real Assault.

I fully agree. It sucks that we have to find workarounds to play some of the older gametypes (Race, One Flag, Assault), or even have to mod to get some of the options back (Infection), but until 343 releases more gametypes (and that’s if they do/will), the workarounds are probably the best we can get

I still can’t believe they removed Assault. It wasn’t my favorite but I did prefer it over CTF.
