In the Multiplayer Overview vidoc, the Academy commander is wearing another armor core that isn’t MkVII or MkVB. It kinda looks like it can be a MkVI variant to me. If it is true that we can’t mix armor peices with other cores, I hope they have plenty of pieces for each core to where we don’t feel limited. This makes four armor cores so far if it is available to players and not just her custom armor, which it very well could be just that.
I guess we just have to wait and see.
That’s probably what will happen
You know I’m kind of down for armor cores if this is how it’ll work. But if thats the case, what does the Yoroi armor belong to or will that be its own core.

The Yoroi is it’s own core. So far we know of it, MkVB, MkVII, and possibly the one I mentioned in the OP.
Honestly I think they can do a lot with armor cores. I’d love to see Mark IV and V armor cores, considering both those armors have at least a few variants. Plus, they could always make more for those cores specifically. And of course, a Mark VI core would be cool too.
What is an Armor Core exactly? I am a little confused, as we aren’t just selecting a chest piece.
Does Armor Core = Chest Piece in this instance and its just new verbiage?

Armor cores consist of the main chest armor, arms, and legs. It’s basically the base armor that you add on to with knees, shoulders, helmet, and arm/leg utilities.

Can we mix armor from different cores?

So far we haven’t seen any Reach armor on a MkVII core and vise versa, which is leading most to believe we won’t be able to, unfortunately. I can see why, because it would cause clipping issues since the cores aren’t shaped the same.
I mean, even if we can’t mix every armor piece with every armor core, who cares? It’s not like you don’t still have a wide variety of ways to set up your armor…
I’m surprised there have been so many cores confirmed so far if I’m being honest.

Which ones have been confirmed?

I believe only 3, Mk. V - Reach, Mk. VII - Olympus, and Yoroi. Though it is very likely that we’ll see a core for H4/5 and H3.
We may have these:
Mark V- Reach
Mark V- CE (low-poly goodness)
Mark VI- Halo 3 (ooohhhh)
Mark VII- Olympus (I assume this is the main/base core of Infinite)
Recruit- Gen 2 (for all your Halo 4/5 needs)
Yoroi
Mark VI- Online (doesn’t quite fit anywhere else than itself)
Combat Harness- Elite (for all future Sangheili needs)

I would care quite a bit if my favorite helmet has me stuck using reach customisation and effectively locks me out of any of the new stuff if I want to keep it. Especially because we don’t yet know how much customization would be stuck to each core.
Then there’s the issue of content moving forard. If they add a new core every season, and each season limits the items of that pass to the new core, then we are really barely getting any new customizarion imo. Half the fun of new armor is seeing how it mixes with your old stuff. No mixing means significantly less ability to create a spartan you like. It would honestly feel like a big downgrade from reach/4 style customization imo.
Then take the “non-canon” stuff like yoroi. That set likely won’t get many permutations at all. If you can’t put it’s pieces on other cores they you are basically just left with a full body skin, no better than halo 5’s system imo.
It would just be a real downer imo after they promised we would have the most customization of any halo and talking all this big talk about player expression only to be met with a system that is actually extremely limiting for seemingly no reason.

Uhh sure, that’s one way of looking at it I guess
