The Promethean “Portal Projector” is a charge-then-fire turret that creates a pit-like portal on the ground. Any infantry or vehicles that fall in are immediately killed or destroyed.
Targeting is accomplished with a non-traditional reticle. Similar to how the Target Designator displays a circle on the ground to show where a strike will occur, as long as the Portal Projector is equipped, a flat reticle slides over the ground to show where the portal will be created.
Like all other turrets, the aiming thumbstick turns the player’s view while the variable-depth reticle remains in the center of the screen. Unlike all other turrets, the grounded reticle can be manually slid away from the center of the screen with the movement thumbstick. The reticle cannot be manually slid past the edge of the player’s view.
The portal’s size, duration, and cooldown are all proportional to the charge time before firing. The minimum charge time yields a small radius, short duration portal with a short cooldown period after firing. The maximum charge time yields a large radius, long duration portal with a long cooldown period after firing. The weapon automatically fires upon reaching the maximum charge level.
Once the minimum charge time is achieved, the flat reticle begins expanding, from small enough to only fit a single Spartan in to large enough to fit an entire Warthog in, indicating the size of the portal that will be created upon release of the trigger.
