A growing phenomenon in the Halo community and franchise is the lackluster in population and potential for an even more convoluted connection. A huge foundation of this issue, that I found, is the region-oriented dedicated servers… it is beginning to show in regions like Oceania (of which I am located) that times of apparent play (prime time) are so lessened and minimized the game becomes less of a game and more of a commitment, where players are forced to always be on at those dedicated few hours rather than when they are available, constricting their enjoyment of the game and overall the franchise and community.
The current solution that 343 Industries has implemented is a parameter based searching system, which is openly welcomed however the parameters could use a little revolutionizing and correction in my opinion. My solution for this issue is to use the parameter based system however it would alternate the hosting system and servers.
As most would know Halo prior to Halo 5: Guardians, was Player to Player hosting, of which some latency issues occurred, however I believe it could be used with the parameter system to create a more fitting and equal experience. I am suggesting a cross-hosting parameter search system which instead of the “Focused”, “Balanced” and “Expanded” dedicated servers search system, it would be corrected to be two options, “Dedicated” which searches within your local region and close-to, finding servers with pings of less than 200ms and strong connections, offering the best experience; and the other option would instead be “Player2Player” which would allow players outside of their prime times to search outside of their own region and possibly get some games with a chance of a better connection, some may have latency but overall the experience would be a lot more fulfilling rather than a constant disadvantage of shot registration and other constantly latent experiences, this would equalize the field a little bit more and allow those players to still get their moneys worth and enjoy the game, as well as not feel so obliged to always be on at certain times.
This is one supposed solution of many to this issue.
I’m in Aus as well, and as much as I love Halo, I simply can’t be bothered trying to play it anymore.
The azure servers are disappointing for their placement in Australia as well.

I don’t even bother searching focused or balanced anymore. When I have found local games during the week, it’s usually against the same full Onyx lobby’s irrespective of my rank.
I predominately solo queue. I’ve setup up a second account just to play against Northern Americans on their servers and see how long I can stand the lag without going on tilt (usually 3-4 games).
This is exactly correct I am not saying cater to Oceania but by gosh allow us a chance at hosting the servers like old Halos which allow us to play outside our servers.
Yeah agreed Makoto. I would like to see some address from 343 Industries’ support team at least acknowledging the problem and verifying that possible suggestive solutions are in the works.
I know some of you around the world have it bad…make no mistake there… But I just also want to be honest with you all that living in certain parts of the US the servers are not great… The problem with these MS server locations here is that there not place across our country for gaming… Remember H5 was installed on preexisting server locations really never intended for gaming geographically… This really hurts H5 as a game. Its performance is garbage in my book. For some odd reason I rarely ever connect to the server I want… instead I connect to ones well over 1000 miles… And to be honest a bit more if H6 is going to have any real impact they are going to have to add way more data centers or start using others… That’s the bottom line really… They really need to take a close look at how TF2 is doing there game when it comes to servers…

TF2? Team Fortress 2? And agreed not attempting to play the sole victim of Oceania; Asia, Europe and even North America have it bad… the point of these dedicated servers was good connection, now not even that is consistent…

In effect this is misleading. I think TF2 stands for Titanfall 2 in this case.

Okay sweet. Yeah was wondering why they would quote a much older game… probably to get their point across… But agreed their apparent solution is not the only one, they need to acknowledge other possible alternatives. Even if they have to slightly variate to different regions, ie Oceania is P2P whilst North America is still Dedicated Servers…

Im sorry I did mean Titanfall2…I really like the way they have approached the servers. From what ive read they are really going that extra mile to make sure there game performs as best as possible… They are using a wide range of servers all over the world. Not just MS servers. I agree with you though for a game like H5 being on dedicated servers it plays very inconsistent when it comes to the servers. Very poor performance and connection. My friend swears that H5 isn’t even running on dedicated servers anymore. And sometimes I begin to wonder myself. Because it sure doesn’t play like it.

But the point still remains that population is a huge issue as well as connection; it is simply not enough to supply dedicated servers it is merely unsatisfying band-aid fix that will continue to create issues in the future, the population and community need to be re-united!

I agree with you… Both play a major part of the puzzle… But how do we re-unite the Halo base? Today I happened to look up the most played games on xbox. The way I read it is Halo5 is now at number 19. That really says a lot to me. Specially when you see the games that are before Halo5. Halo5 is just now getting close to a year old and when I saw it was at 19 I was shocked… The question I have is why has this game slipped all the way to number 19?
