POPULATION COUNT?

It’d be really dope to see a population count again just like they did in the older halo’s. What do you guys think?

Not sure I see the point. All it seems like it will do to me is encourage players to play playlists with higher populations without even trying lower populated ones, thus causing those to be even more abandoned. And I don’t see any benefits other than meme material.

Population counters are a blessing and a curse. They seemed to work great in H3’s heyday, but I’m not sure I’d want them in Infinite.

I think the inclusion of a population count feature is something that 343i may honestly not have the confidence to put in on Infinite. I can’t remember if Halo 4 had a counter or not, but I do remember everyone freaking out a bit when the online population for that game seemed to almost completely disappear overnight. Having a counter built into the UX in a situation like that may do more harm than good.

I think Bungie included the pop. counts in matchmaking because they really seemed to be into consumer transparency at the time, and it’s probably something that they figured we’d all be interested in seeing. I don’t see all too big a benefit to it coming back; as mentioned by a previous response, it may just serve to diminish population in lower-popularity playlists. Granted, I think if 343i does put one in Infinite, it will be a demonstration that they’re confident in the game they’ve built, and I’d like for that to be the case (confident rather than hubristic).

Playlist population counters are probably not coming back. Many games seem to be moving away from that. A global population or general matchmaking population counter would be more likely.

Every halo game sort of has a population counter. When the population drops down enough, your fireteam is the population counter. Haha.

Overall population - I don’t mind
Playlist population - Probably bad idea since may lead to dead playlists due to people avoiding low population playlists.

Sometimes things like the veto/vote system, etc… probably should stay gone because things like playlist population can hurt the games.

I could see this working and failing. It would make people play one playlist instead of the others that are lower population.

I will never play a playlist I don’t like. I stick to tdm, that’s it. I won’t queue for anything with objectives like flag etc. I play what I like regardless of population. I don’t know anyone that would pick popularity over enjoyment. I see these comments a lot and they make no sense to me at all.
Edit. I agree with Chimera30, if we see a counter it might be a global one.

Overall population would be one thing but playlist population would manipulate or push people to play in the higher populated playlists.

Why ? I stated above that I play slayer / tdm in Halo, nothing more. Why would I queue for a higher populated playlist when I have no interest in the Halo objective game types ? Why would anyone put popularity over enjoyment ? I imagine players queue for what they want to, regardless of population counters.
