All previous Halo games have in the past had player collision with both friendly and enemy teams. However, a portion of the Halo community has argued that player collision results in movement-related tropes such as bumping one another or being stuck behind team members thus resulting in hiccups of game-flow. Other successful FPS franchises such as Call of Duty, have employed a default setting of ‘no player collision’ with little community polarisation or in-game issues. As a result, 343 has decided to make no player collision the default setting within Halo Infinite’s multiplayer, whilst leaving the option open for competitive playlists and custom games.
To the opposition, collision is a fundamental component of Halo’s multiplayer. Users arguing for a return to the older setting, have put forth reasons such as double jumping, immersion experience, and even a love for the chaotic situations that occur from collision. Moreover, in situations with multiple enemies, phasing creates an overlapping mass of enemies that may result in uninformed and random target acquisition. Additionally, new issues have arisen in Halo: Infinite that have not been an issue (or as much as) in other franchises that employed a no player collision setting. That being projectiles being stopped if a friendly player is walking through you from the side or behind, sometimes resulting in a grenade being displaced or a rocket suicide.
343 recently asserted that there is currently a split consensus within the Halo community on what the default collision setting should be. Consequently, this poll aims to illuminate the level of polarisation on the issue within the Waypoint community*. Although I do not have authority over replies, I hope discussion within this thread can be both civil and limited to the argument at hand.
Update:
This poll has clearly proven that there is no longer a split consensus on the issue, as players have had more time to play the game the issues with no player collision have been made evident to the larger community. Hence, the poll now shows a 9:1 ratio in favour of having the original Halo collision functionality on. The poll reporting changing this much after the game’s beta release demonstrates that around 95% of new voters (after the beta release) are in favour of reinstating player collision. Furthermore, multiple players who had previously been accepting of having the setting off, have now changed their viewpoint after playing the game. In line with community feedback, 343 SHOULD reinstate player collision to its former setting as it functioned in older Halos.
I vote yes only because I think buddy jumps are a necessity. So, they should turn on vertical only player collisions. I do like not getting bottlenecked and killed because I walked into an ally, so that part I do enjoy; but jumping on people’s heads is a critical part of the game in my opinion.
I vote yes. Neither option is without their own setbacks, but I personally find the problems that arise from no player collision more detrimental. I find firing a rocket into the back of a teammate and suiciding because they phased through me more annoying than bumping into people or not being able to go through a door when someone is in it.
I voted for collision. I’m willing to bet if 343 decided not to change it in the first place, not as many people would have come out and complained about colliding with other players.
It’s one of those situations where people don’t realize they want it until they have it, but unfortunately this comes at the cost of others losing something they took for granted and wish they could have back.
I am not sold on either mainly because I see the good in both. I can’t tell you how many times I have been killed because I couldn’t get past a teammate or how many time in infection mode I got pushed and used as a shield. But I also like the buddy jump. The are pros and cons for both. Whatever 343 decides I will go with. I am natural.
It’s not. People are running blindly into fights, see that they are outmatched and are getting mad because normal physics prevents them from running away. The only map that I saw with this problem is Recharge’s narrow doors and that more of a problem with the doors…
No it doesn’t lol. It’s extremely rare. Especially if you’re doing anything besides feeding the other team. Why are you standing in a chokepoint so you can get bombarded by grenades? You’re going to die regardless of collision.
Ask them to remove ridiculous chokepoints from the maps if it’s that big of an issue. The maps are usually better without them.
Players have always had to be aware of their surroundings, and I feel as though the lack of collisions negates this to some degree, thus lowering the skill gap.
Also, in situations where the player finds themselves outnumbered, the lack of collisions will almost always favour the team with more players as they can phase through each other to tank incoming fire.
No we’re playing the same game. The difference is that most people can wait the 0.3 seconds it takes for their spartans to slide past each other. Christ on a bike how hard is it for people to just pay attention to where they’re going
