POLL: Mandatory or Optional DLC?

When the DLC maps arrive for Halo 4 and are eventually inserted into normal playlists, do you want those playlists to require players to have the DLC in order to play (like in Halo 3)? Or, would you prefer the optional DLC system employed by Reach?

I firmly believe that one of the reasons that Reach’s maps are generally disliked is because we have all been forced to over play them. The DLC maps show up so rarely that we all are forced to play the same maps over and over until we are sick of them. The fact that some of Reach’s maps are just plain bad makes this even worse.

Halo 3 on the other hand (if you had the DLC) was consistently fresh. On the whole, Halo 3 may not have had the best maps in the franchise, but its playlists all had a nice variety of maps, so the environments were rarely stale. Halo 3 also maintained a high population much longer than Reach did.

I realize that some people resented having to buy more content just to keep playing their favorite playlists, but I think that will be less of an issue with Halo 4 thanks to the LE and the Map Pack Pass.

I would love to see the return of normal playlists that require DLC.

What do you guys think?

Require people to have them.

I dont really know. I just hope if we get an all dlc playlist this time around, it can have a good population so we can all play our dlc.

Since I’ll have them then I think it should be a requirement. Who cares about people who can’t afford?

Require the DLC for all but a few playlists. Seriously, with the War Games Map Pack Pass being available separately for a mere $25 or bundled with the LE, there will be no reason for most players to not have it.

Urg. I never did get the DLC maps for Halo 3 (didn’t have the funds) and I’m stuck with maybe half a dozen playlists, and end up playing the same maps over and over. REALLY didn’t like it.

I’m getting the LE, so it won’t be an issue this time around, but I know most people wouldn’t like having a limited experience just because they don’t have the money/aren’t willing to cough up more money than they originaly paid.

Rather there be a special filter for normal playlists that singles out other people that have them and gives only those maps for options.

There should be some that require them, and some that don’t. That way, everyone wins. Having none of them require it as is the case with Reach right now, it’s way too rare to get a map we payed for. Which makes them a waste. By requiring every list to have DLC, it can kind of screw over people who don’t have money, and screw over those players who like to play with friends who just don’t get maps.

I think Ranked should require them. Social should not. As long as there’s a slayer, objective, and BTB that requires them, I am perfectly happy.

Another option, which is a simple one, is to just have a couple DLC only playlists created just for the DLC maps.

Playlists such as “Squad DLC” from Reach received low population, though this is more due to the lack of reasonably good gametypes (arguable, don’t take as fact) being paired with their respectful maps. Initially this was a good idea, but we see how it turned out.

Moving on, Halo 3’s system didn’t officially go full DLC-Req until the game was nearing the end of its Multiplayer timeline, with any game having around 4ish years to its Multiplayer value. This was enacted on many playlists, but mainly the Ranked ones, since casuals were moving on to the next game as is.

If you had to ask me, I’d prefer neither of the options presented. Instead, I would (given the high number of LE orders out there) provide players with an option to search only for other players with any given DLC. This way, the search would be filtered to provide only those players, and the filter option would be easily implemented as an extra option among the typical “Good Connection”, “Skill” and such.

Aha! I’m not alone! Concurred!

I think it should work like this:

When players enter matchmaking, the halo matchmaking scans their profile to determine which DLC they have, and they get grouped with other players with the same DLC, and the people woth no DLC gets put together with the other DLCless players, and this should be randomised as in it doesnt always happen so you can still get a good variety of maps to play.

Require it. But I doubt it’ll happen

Um, probably Mandatory.

Mandatory
+More fun
+Actually get to play on maps that you paid for
+Don’t overplay maps
+Expands lifespan of game
-Players without maps can’t play

Optional
-Less fun
-Players don’t get to play on maps they paid for often
-Maps are overplayed
-Forced to play on Forge maps
-Shortens lifespan of game
+Players without maps can play

Mandatory! I’m getting the LE. We should be able to play what we paid for. You see, a big reason why so many people don’t have the DLC is because they know that you can never play it.

That system sounds great in theory, but it only works in an environment with a high population of players that have the DLC. If the population within a playlist drops too low (like in Reach), there are not enough DLC players to go around for the system to match them up with each other, meaning that they never get to play what they paid for.

This in turn devalues the DLC for anyone who has yet to purchase it, resulting in there being even fewer players that actually have DLC and making DLC maps that much more rare in Matchmaking. Its a domino effect.

I would like playlists to fairly quickly make people use DLC.
I know that it takes time for some to buy the DLC but if DLC is not a requirement it hurts everyone else in the long run because those that bought it cannot even really enjoy the DLC they paid for unless in custom games for the first months it seems.

Require some playlists to have all DLC and that is my final answer.

> Require people to have them.

-Yoink- no!!

Only have some playlists require DLC. Definitely not all. Some just can’t afford it (like those gangstas living in Oakland).

On the other hand, you have people who paid for the game, but can’t enjoy the entirety of what they paid for either when supposedly “optional” DLC stuff starts coming out.

It’s a conundrum.

I prefer them be a requirement for most of the playlists in the game.

Honestly, if you aren’t going to further support the series, or care about the map packs, then you probably aren’t gonna care that you’re limited to the basics. Those being:

8 player FFA
4v4 Slayer
4v4 Objective

Seriously, EVERY OTHER PLAYLIST should require DLC. Including any ranked/competitive versions of FFA/4v4.

DLC it within itself -Yoink-, why the heck would i pay $60 for a game and then $20 -Yoinking!- more for like 3-5 multiplayer maps, and then do it over and over again. And having DLC required for gameplay would just mean that the game on the disc is freaking incomplete.

DLC should not be required for anything, just have them put on some sort of filter or something.

There should be an option in the matchmaking lobby to search for players with DLC content. Kinda like in Halo: Reach, you could search for players based off skill, language, or good connection.
