Disclaimer: I attempted to make a poll topic type but it kept saying there was an error and to try again later. Poll Link:http://www.strawpoll.me/12531930 This question stems from several things:
I’ve been seeing a lot of comments about buffing wolverines or reavers, I’m curious about what the community thinks about infantry’s role in combating air. - The Banished have two units (carbines and grunts) that can attack air, carbines are “red” at all stages of the game, grunts are “red” until their second upgrade when they turn to “yellow”. - The UNSC has one infantry unit (marines) that can attack air, and is currently “yellow” at fighting it.When voting, there are several things to remember:
Per the golden triangle, infantry is supposed to be good vs air - Infantry has much slower movement speed than air (making it difficult to react to air’s movements) - AA infantry can be produced throughout the entire game (you can have infantry out before the enemy has air out) - Infantry are much less expensive than air units - Infantry takes less time to build than air, less population space - Typically, infantry are easier to build than air
UNSC can only produce AA infantry from a base - Banished can produce AA infantry from a base or raid campIn this instance, AA infantry defines an infantry unit that can attack air What are your thoughts? What changes could be made to diversify the matchup? (i.e. an upgrade that allows snipers to attack air, a new tier 2/3, quick infantry unit that is good vs air etc.) With any comments I’d love to see some info about the game type (blitz, domination, deathmatch etc.) For reference, I’ve played mainly team deathmatch.
I haven’t played with wolverines outside of the campaign, but I don’t think reavers are bad AA, they’re just bad against sentinels, but then again what isn’t (well maybe just mass torpedo Banshees).
The triangle is used as a soft counter suggesting not hard counter. In an ideal word the most effect anti tank units are infantry, the most effect aa units are air, and the most effect infstry killers are infantry.
Now I would like to see an improvement in some regards of the game. I don’t think the infantry air are the problem, more so the problem being vehicles re so underwhelming
I’ve felt that Infantry is a bit weak in any serious air engagement since launch(my opinion hasn’t changed with experience). Hopefully a new anti-air upgrade or unit is added to the infantry lineup on both sides.
Infantry vs air are fine. Infantry are the most spammable jack of all trades unit in the game. If they get too strong vs air then air would be useless.
The problem with air right now is that dedicated AA (both dedicated AA vehicles and AA turret upgrades) doesn’t do AOE damage. They added/impoved this in SC2 over the years and it really helped fix excessive air unit balance issues.
Remember with dedicated AA they can only attack air. Meaning that against everything except air they are expensive, useless, liabilities. So people don’t want to over invest in dedicated AA, other problem is that dedicated AA as a ground unit is never going to be as maneuverable as air units because of terrain restrictions. In the hands of a competent player speedy air units will always find a weakness to exploit. So when ground AA connects with air units it really needs to do its job. If you buff their damage too much then they’ll just completely dominate, that’s why AA needs to deal AOE, so that it can keep enemy air from reaching critical mass.

I thought that was what the rocket launcher upgrade was meant to do.

That doesn’t sound OP at all.

It is of course, but I haven’t felt that it makes enough of a difference, but then again I guess I just play against Anders too much…
