1 hit really spices up the gameplay in my opinion.
What if instead they had two different melees? One where you thrust the flag in your hand out at the enemy which takes two hits, and another where you stab the flag at the enemy which is a one hit?
The flags melee should 100% be a one hit kill.
Having the movement penalty from carrying the flag is already enough of a handicap as it is, so I don’t think it should be made worse by making the carrier just as powerless against foes in close range fights as they already would be in long range ones.
In that case, anyone using the 2-hit kill would be dumb as a rock.

No because the one hit would be a heavy attack which would leave you exposed to others around you.
I don’t understand how a flag carrier could be any more exposed than they already are.
If you use a heavy attack, you can’t maneuver out of the way if someone else tries to come at you.
3rd option. Throw the flag like a javalin for a 1SK.
I like the idea of a heavy and light attack, would be good if it was like the gravity hammer, a heavy 1 hit kill swing with the shoot button, that maybe takes a bit of time to execute (a quick enemy could melee you before you hit them if you don’t time it right), and a quicker 2 hit melee that you do with the melee button (for when you are hitting an enemy that already has their shields down)
Old (Halo 1, 2, 3, Reach) 1 hit flag kill — GOOD
Modern (Halo 4, 5) Sidearm + 1 hit flag — EXCELENT (Seriously Spartans are super soldiers they can carry both…)
Present (Infinite) 2 hit flag kill — NERFED
I believe I listened in one of the developer videos (or blog posts) leading to the game launch that they wanted to keep the hero moments or something like that.
Well, they practically killed the one-man army flag carry from spawn to spawn, it is still possible, I just did a couple against extremely inexperienced players, but seriously now the flag carrier is at a great disadvantage.
I know that is a team-based game, and we should play with the team for the team and bla bla bla… but being able to single handedly score a point is FUN is AWESOME is COOL. A team after all, can also depend on individual performances (Hero moments) to achieve a common goal, victory.
Having actually played it back to back (H3/H4/Inf), one-hit kill for both flag and oddball is way better.
As others have said, the flag makes you move slower so it should be a 1 hit. If it was regular movement speed than maybe i can see 2 hit
