POLL: An expanded Vehicle Sandbox?

Let’s look at Halo Infinite’s vehicle sandbox:

  • Banshee (Halo CE, 2001)
  • Chopper (Halo 3, 2007)
  • Ghost (Halo CE, 2001)
  • Mongoose (Halo 3, 2007)
    Variant: Gungoose
  • Scorpion (Halo CE, 2001)
  • Warthog (Halo CE, 2001)
    Variant: Razorback
    Variant: Rocket Hog
  • Wasp (Halo 5 Warzone, 2016)
  • Wraith (Halo CE, 2001)

Not counting variants (which are really just lazy ways of creating new vehicles) there are only 8 vehicles. 5 of the 8 vehicles literally first appeared in Halo CE, a game that is over 20 years old! Two others were introduced in Halo 3, a game that is 15 years old. The only “new” addition to Halo Infinite is the Wasp which made its first appearance over 5 years ago (and even this is just a variation of the Hornet which debuted in Halo 3). Point being, Halo Infinite has not introduced a single new Vehicle which is somewhat wild considering Halo Wars has already laid out the groundwork for new vehicles. So I ask the question, should Halo Infinite Expand on its Vehicle Sandbox?

Should Halo expand the Vehicle Sandbox?
  • Yes, of course they should.
  • No, just focus on other things.

For those who voted yes, at the bottom of this very long post is another poll which lists several vehicle suggestions, vote for the vehicles you would like to see added to the game. I’m going to include vehicles already in the game just for the sake of illustrating the entire Sandbox and I’m curious to see what people think of the existing vehicles.

What follows is a description of every vehicle included in the poll, with my own input on how I think the vehicle could work. You do not have to vote in the poll based on my opinion, if you like a vehicle concept but see it working differently still vote for that Vehicle and leave a comment on how you think it should work. Additionally, if I miss any vehicles or you have any of your own ideas for new vehicles share them! While I likely won’t add them to the OG post, others should like any suggestions they agree with as a way of voting “YES” for them. With all that said let’s get into it.

LIGHT VEHICLES

1. Chopper

A. Chopperkaze

  • A Chopper variant with an upgraded speed burst. After activating the burst players can hold “A” to eject themselves from the Chopper, launching them straight into the air. The Chopper will continue on its boosted trajectory and detonate on impact with a target. This makes for some really awesome super soldier moments. With Spartans not taking fall damage this works, Brutes could use jet packs as well.

2. Ghost

A. Revenant

  • A Ghost variant that uses a Plasma Mortar instead of Plasma Cannons… the passenger seat in Reach just made this thing weird IMO, I’d rather keep this more like the Ghost. This is on par with the Gauss Cannon variant for the Warthog.

3. Jackrabbit

  • The Jackrabbit is a very fast 3 wheeled UNSC light strike vehicle armed with a mini-frag launcher. As the vehicle accelerates the front two wheels narrow preventing the launcher from firing while also limiting the ability to turn. Hold LT to decelerate and cause the wheels to widen.

A. Roadrunner

  • A variant of the Jackrabbit that replaces the Frag launcher with a speed booster. This would be a really fun concept for a custom games race vehicle IMO.

4. Mongoose

A. Gungoose

5. Roach

  • A Banished Ultralight hovercraft capable of vertical jumps and glides but not full flight. The Roach would be driven by a single user but it can carry a passenger like the Mongoose. Press “A” to thrust the hovercraft vertically into the air and hold “LT” to quickly descend (useful for splattering enemy infantry). I think it would be interesting if the Jackals were the primary users of this vehicle, seeing as they have never been known to use any vehicles in the Halo games. In Campaign the Jackal driver could shoot while driving with a sidearm while the back passenger could use an energy shield while shooting as well. This would be the ideal vehicle for getting across the rough terrain of the Ring. It would play faster than the Ghost, but it would be much more fragile (essentially what the Mongoose is to the Warthog).

A. Battle-Roach

  • Adds a Needle Cannon but removes the passenger seat.

6. Warthog

A. Gauss Warthog

  • A Warthog variant that replaces the Chaingun Turret with a Gauss Cannon. For balancing this could require a charge to shoot like the Rail Gun.

B. Razorback

C. Rocket Hog

MEDIUM VEHICLES

7. Cobra

  • A medium UNSC battle tank / artillery vehicle operated by a single user. The Cobra uses a Gauss Cannon as well as an artillery Cannon, however the artillery can only be fired while the Cobra is in Seige mode. Toggle Seige mode by holding “A” while stationary, once in Siege Mode, the Driver can fire a “Drone Projectile” which is deployed in the air and serves as a birds eye view of the battlefield providing the operator with a projection of artillery fire. Enemies can destroy the Drone to temporarily disrupt the Cobra’s artillery fire. While in Seige Mode the Cobra cannot use the Gauss Cannon leaving it exposed at short range.

A. Kodiak

  • A heavier stronger version of the Cobra, featuring a chaingun turret which can be operated by an additional gunner. The Kodiak loses it’s Gauss Cannon in favour of a more powerful cluster bomb for the main artillery cannon.

8. Marauder

  • A medium sized banished war sled armed with a Scrap Cannon (operated by a gunner) and a Spike Grenade Launcher (operated by the driver), featuring two passenger seats on each side of the vehicle for troop transport (the Banished need a ground transport vehicle IMO). This would be stronger than the Warthog, but slower.

A. Prowler

  • A variant of the Marauder, the Driver’s Spike Launcher is lost in favour of a lighter, faster war sled (more in line with the Warthog).

9. Reaver

  • The Reaver is a Banished medium Bi-Pedal Walker armed with air to ground missiles and thrusters which can be used as a propulsion system to jump and “ground pound” enemy targets. The missiles would function like the Missile Pod turret from Halo 3, which means they can be fired at ground targets indirectly while the missiles can lock onto aerial targets. Hold “LT” to project a ground pound and press “A” to activate the Thrusters.

A. Goblin

  • A heavy combat suit featuring a Needle Cannon and a Methane Launcher which is useful for area denial. Primarily used by the Grunts.

10. Wolverine

  • A UNSC half-track anti-air vehicle armed with MLRS rockets operated by a single user. While the MLRS can be fired at ground targets, it only locks on to air vehicles. This would function like the Rocket Hog, but it has better defenses and can be operated by a single user.
    A. Honey Badger
  • An advanced version of the Wolverine featuring a Mini-Frag Turret with EMP functionality that can be operated by an additional gunner.

HEAVY VEHICLES

11. Locust

  • A Banished quadrupedal vehicle capable of climbing over uneven terrain. The Locust uses a Focus Cannon to fire a long ranged beam that is highly effective vs vehicles. There is a delay before the beam can be fired, and sensitivity is severely restricted during firing which leaves the Locust exposed in short range combat. Enemies can disable the legs of the Locust which will cause the vehicle to lower to the ground leaving it temporarily inoperable and boardable (just like the Scarab).

A. Cicada

  • Improved sensitivity while firing. Capable of activitating an energy shield to defend against incoming damage while the Focus Cannon is not being used.

12. Mantis

A. Collossus

  • A larger Variant of the “Mantis” featuring a Rail Gun and an automatic Grenade launcher.

13. Scorpion

  • Bring back the ability to transport 4 passengers, it’s useful for Campaign.

A. Grizzly

  • An upgraded Battle Tank featuring Twin Cannons for double the fire power, MLRS anti-air rockets for defense vs air vehicles, and twin chainguns for the Turret operator.

14. Wraith

A. AA-Wraith

  • Replaces the Plasma Mortor with twin triple-racked Fuel Rod Cannons.

AERIAL VEHICLES

15. Banshee

A. Vampire

  • An anti-air fighter armed with a Needle Cannon useful for engaging ground targets, a Stasis Beam for engaging air targets, and a cloaking device that breaks Missile locks.

16. Blisterback

  • An aerial seige crawler that fires air to ground missiles and has a plasma cannon which can be operated by an additional gunner. The missiles can be fired automatically (by holding “RT”) or they can be charged and released all at once for a devastating barrage (by holding “LT”). The Blisterback cannot engage other air units unless it lands, then it can use its missiles to lock on to enemy air targets.

A. Shroud

  • An aerial support crawler that can Cloak itself by holding RT (has a recharge time) while automatically cloaking nearby allies. When the Shroud lands it can deploy various equipment such as bubble shields, EMP Mines, Grav lifts, mega drop walls, regenerators, trip mines, etc.

17. Falcon

  • A UNSC light aerospace troop transport gunship, the Crew includes a pilot, two gunners that operate MG turrets, and two passengers.

A. Hawk

  • Replaces the MG turrets with automatic grenade launchers. Adds an MG gun operated by the pilot.

18. Wasp

A. Hornet

  • Adds a transportation function to the Wasp with two seats for passengers (same as Halo 3).

SUPER VEHICLES

19. Elephant

  • A UNSC Mobile Command Centre featuring a front mounted Chaingun Turret. The elephant Spawns random UNSC Weapons, equipment, and light vehicles. So much could be done with the Elephant surrounding game modes, example a King of the Hill mode where the Elephant is the Hill or an Infection mode where the survivors have to drive the elephant to a destination.

A. Mammoth

  • The Mammoth is a larger Elephant variant with increased firepower featuring a front mounted Chaingun and a Gauss turret with a rear-mounted Chaingun and Rocket turret (all 4 corners are covered). The Mammoth is capable of spawning power weapons, equipment, and vehicles. The Mammoth can be deployed in Siege Mode by holding “A” to give the driver operation of a powerful Siege Rail Cannon.

20. Scarab

  • So I doubt we will ever get to “drive” the Scarab - it is just too big. However, I think it would be cool to make a map featuring a Scarab as a set piece. For example it could be a stationary Scarab being manufactured with a functional Scarab Gun. Or you could make a “Walker Assault” game type similar to Star Wars Battlefront II where a defending team has to destory the invading Scarab.

A. Kraken

  • Same idea as Scarab, it would have to be a set piece.

That is 20 possible vehicles, each with there own variants, and 18 of which could be fully functional. That’s more than double what we currently have in the game. Vote for your favourites in the poll below, add feedback for each vehicle, and add suggestions for other Vehicles!

*Edit: Clarifying the polls are multi choice, please take the time to go through the options (find it hard to think people would leave the Warthog of their ballot haha).

Wow strong effort post. Good stuff!

I absolutely hate the Mantis and I rue the day it is added into Infinite.

What is the giant monster truck thing from Halo 5 campaign you couldnt drive? I really want that. I voted Mammoth think that’s it.

Also how in every Halo game to date have we only got one map with Elephants. It’s an absolute travesty.

All I want is another Elephant like vehicle. I can wait for forge in a year or two, so the custom folks can get a good chaotic custom style game to compliment it.

The Elephant (and Mammoth) should absolutely return, everyone loves gigantic mobile battle stations!

If Halo Infinite were ever to expand into a “Vehicular Warfare” mode the Mammoth would basically be the super vehicle of the game (assuming the Scarab isn’t driveable).

Gotta have that Elephant and Gausshog for sure
Also I didn’t see you say Sabre. We need that for Forge

Yeah I mainly focused on the traditional ground / air vehicles because these ones could potentially be added to any BTB game mode, but absolutely those could be included.

LoL

Forget Battle Royal… I want BIG BTB!!! Scarabs Pelicans Liches Sabers Hornets.

I want all dem goodies

RejectedShotgun makes Halo 3 mods like this. Enormous BTB maps with enormous vehicles. I think it was the Arkbound mod or something. Even has Longswords, nukes, and glassing cannons. It’s a ridiculous war mode

I’d love to see a BTB spacebattle mode like LNoS. That would be kind of cool.

Well the most obvious thing we need to ask regarding vehicle sandbox variety is: How can 343 implement Forerunner vehicles?

We had the Phaeton, but that was just a beefed up wasp. It did have a few interesting features:

  • A primary fire that ramped up DPS overtime (we talked about this when discussing LMGs)
  • Its tier-2 variant had a primary fire that was a continuous beam
  • Its boost was more like a teleport and was omni-directional

I’ve noticed that UNSC and Covenant vehicles tend to have traits based on their faction.

UNSC:

  • Can carry more passengers (god for objectives)
  • Faster
  • Horn (especially useful in Infinite because of the ping feature) and Handbrake
  • Hitscan guns/faster projectiles

Covenant:

  • Omni-directional movement
  • Boost
  • Driver can fire weapons (only need 1 player)
  • Mortars
  • Energy shields (mostly H5), (Mantis had this in H4 but was removed I think)

Not all vehicles fit into these categories, but it does show how some vehicles can similar roles, but behave differently.

So what trait should Forerunner vehicles have? Some ability to transform could be interesting. Your idea for the Roach makes me imagine a vehicle that can double as both a ground unit and an air unit.

I really like this. A vehicle that can turn invisible is pretty cool, although I think it should probably have to toggle between cloaking itself and cloaking others for balance. IDK. But what I really like is the equipment dropping ability. It actually sort of solves an issue with the Razorback. No one really uses the weapon carrying ability in MP because trying to get those items out in the heat of battle is annoying. But maybe the driver could just “eject” the items by pressing LB or something to drop them for allies.

Finally the ability to drop things from an air vehicle lends well to a bombing vehicle. Basically a forerunner hovercraft that can drop a volley of Splinter grenades to block an area or kill infantry. It’s basically an air vehicle no specifically designed to kill other air vehicles.

EMPing other vehicles is something that would be awesome. Maybe it could be a secondary fire option. The only thing we’ve capable of this was the Reach Grenade Falcon. But it was only available on Tip of the Spear (a linear shooting gallery section) and New Alexandria (but the play HAS to pilot the Falcon (co-op it is possible)).
