I’m tired of doing Valhalla/ ragnorok fifty times in a row because most people voted for Valhalla(ragnorok) please go back to the halo 3 voting system
Not sure how that works, what i think should happen though, is that players should be able to choose what map they want to play on by simply choosing it in the lobby along side what playlist they would like to play on. Once they get bored of one map, they simply choose another map…no should complain that way. (NOTE: key word = should)
Agreed. Veto system was best.
Server browser is the only true answer. I used to think that playing random maps was awesome. I always thought Halo 2 did it right because I like some maps that most people dislike. If it wasn’t for the fact that Halo 2 had no voting system I would have probably never played certain maps and Lockout would have owned the voting lobby. I like map variety far more than playing the same maps over and over. Now that I’m thinking about it server browser doesn’t work with Halo fans. Halo fans are too stubborn to step out of their boundaries and Halo PC proved that in it’s prime. I don’t want to fall in the Blood Gulch 24/7 trap ever again. With no vote you have people constantly quitting because they don’t like the map. We are in a lose/lose situation.
both systems are flawed cuz even in halo 3 most of the time you vetoed you ended up playing valhalla or the most popular map in that playlist, its why i ended up hating that map so much and hemorrhage in reach. the big flaw i always had with both is if you dont get the option for the most popular map/gametype at first all you had to do was veto or choose none of the above and you’d almost always get it as the next option. i like warmertoasts option of choosing a map or maps once you choose a playlist and that way it’ll match you with others who want to play on them as well. you could also have a “select all” option if you dont want to limited.
Because, “Veto for BR’s!” when you got Standoff only to end up on Boundless was a great thing.
> Because, “Veto for BR’s!” when you got Standoff only to end up on Boundless was a great thing.
I agree. I always used to like Halo 3’s veto system until I had to play Assembly after every mediocre map was vetoed so many times a day, it almost cost me my disc in the end. I have sadly resorted to just quit every time I have to play that map instead.
You would also be happy to hear that I always vote for map, not game-type, in fear of getting Assembly.
> Because, “Veto for BR’s!” when you got Standoff only to end up on Boundless was a great thing.
It wasn’t the best voting system but it was better than people picking the same map over and over. Besides boundless was a bad map that doesn’t make the voting system bad

True.
It also helped that in H2 the amount of great maps was far higher than everything since. As in: almost all great. H3 was a bit similar, but from there on we never had a Halo game with that amount of epic maps.
And if you have a lot of great maps, you can have a random pick system that’s less likely to piss people off.
H5 should have the system H4 has, just with a better map rotation system. Basically after each game you have about half the players staying for the next game, don’t give them the previous map as an option for the next 2 rounds…
Still 3 choices, just more variation.

This is “true”, but are you that optimistic you believe that you are going to enjoy every map that 343 creates? I am certainly sure that won’t happen in my case, and especially not with sprint.
I don’t always vote for Ragnarok. But when I do, it’s to avoid Settler, Vortex, or Longbow.
> I don’t always vote for any other BTB map ever. But when I do, it’s to avoid Longbow.
Fix’d.
> I don’t always vote for Ragnarok. But when I do, it’s to avoid Settler, Vortex, or Longbow.
Longbow, IMO, isn’t that bad of a map… However, Settler and Vortex and Meltdown and Complex and Shatter and (list goes on) make me vomit in my mouth. Hopefully 343i will correct their flaws in map design next time around. This can be executed by:
- Avoid having excessive aesthetic clutter. Maps should be smooth and without rocks and crates to get stuck on.
- Incorporate power positions in each map that when held will control the balance between victory or defeat.

Yeah I’m a very optimistic person, some maps I don’t like, e.g guardian but the maps that are awkward tend to make some unique matches as players move around the map unsure were to go. Plus also there will amazing maps that make other maps seem rubbish in comparison. Sprint doesn’t ruin maps btw, I’m a bit confuse why people think that
I have to admit that I prefer the Veto system as well. It allowed me to play a wider variety of maps and gametypes that wouldn’t usually be played. Since Reach, you would hardly ever get to play objective games in BTB, since people would always vote for Slayer on Hemorrhage/Ragnarok (depending on the game). In Halo 3, however, I’d get a nice mix of 1-flag on Last Resort, or Neutral Assault on Avalanche. That kind of stuff would never be played in Halo Reach/Halo 4.
So yeah, maybe sometimes you’d end up playing on a map that you dislike, but even then, I was happy to have the variety that the Veto system offered. Is it better to never play the map/gametype that you want, due to everybody always voting for the “popular” map, or is it better to get to play every map and gametype, but have to “suffer” playing a map that you dislike every now and then?

I want something like … “Select 3 maps you absolutely don’t wanna play ever” in the lobby. I am sure that would make everyone happy. Then have a veto system on top of that selecting maps on the basis of which are barely rejected, each game.
Agreed. I’ve barely played Meltdown, because I don’t play Halo 4. But I can see that ‘Meltdown’, ‘Vortex’ and ‘Shatter’ are HORRIFIC maps, and two of the worst I have seen in any FPS game. That’s one of the problems of Map rotation, it’s because all the maps are so bad that the better (yet massively overplayed) ones such as ‘Ragnarok’ comes up.
To add to your bullet points, I think it’s important that maps are aesthetically pleasing. I know people will slate me for this as it should just be about the map itself, but it all starts with how the map looks and that is the players first impression. ‘Abandoned’ for example is, in my opinion, a very dark, ugly and boring map in terms of its aesthetics alone. For me, this can be enough to make me want to vote for another map instead of it.
Another example is that city(ish) map, I have forgotten its name. It was featured in the second map pack, the one with the Hornet teasing us at the edge of the map. The map was actually relatively good I thought, however aesthetically disappointing. It featured white and bland structures everywhere. Then, the worst part was the background, a brilliant looking city, that we of course couldn’t explore. Its the same in the concept art etc. The artwork looked amazing but nothing like the PLAYABLE space in the game. I mean, personally I want to be in the middle of the city, I want to see life 500 years in the future, I want to be surrounded by skyscrapers and lights etc. I can only help that the ugly maps will improve for Halo Xbox One, but also the map design is obviously just as important.

This isn’t true at all. I ensure you in a non-dlc based playlist the maps that launched with the disk were all played about the same. Vetoing a map like high ground for instance didn’t automatically get the pit. You had a 1/whatever chance.
It’s simple statistics.
On topic though, I agree the veto system should return if there are quality maps. Of course 343 is going to think all of their maps are quality, so I guess that part is irrelevant. But it’s simply boring playing Haven over and over and over again. Yeah, it’s better than Solace, but my god.
It happened in Reach, too. The MLG playlist is basically Sanctuary 80% of the time, I kid you not.
I think the veto system works perfectly when there’s good maps. In Halo 3’s MLG Playlist, only good maps are featured (besides amplified) I enjoy playing almost every gametype and map.
Back to what I was talking about, though, there’s no way of knowing whether the maps will be quality or not. I’m willing to take that chance though.
> Because, “Veto for BR’s!” when you got Standoff only to end up on Boundless was a great thing.
Any decent player will, indeed, tell you that BRs on Boundless is in fact A LOT better than Standoff ARs.
A first and most important fix to the “one map gets voted all the time because it’s the best map out there” is: Only bring out top quality maps, and bring out lots of them. At least 12 in the first release of the game, with at least 9 designed for 4v4 combat.
As for the voting system; here’s a good compromise: Vote, but only between only two slots.
If there are 4 4v4 objective maps in the Objective playlist for instance, you only have 50% chance of getting the map that everyone chooses, as opposed to 75% chance. This means you are forced to play different maps than your favorite map half of the time, forcing map variety. The more maps, the better the two slot voting system becomes… Which is why they need to bring out a lot of maps.
For BTB, with fewer maps, they should go to the veto system, since two voting slots for 3 maps means you will play the favored map 66% of the time.
In summary: Adjust the amount of voting slots to the amount of maps in the playlist that can be selected from. The more maps in the playlist, the more voting slots you get, but no more than two voting slots.
