I thought i could play with my friend, (this is his first halo game) halo reach via steam, and he said it was all clunky and laggy, none of has had lags or something in this particular way. I just want to play with my Friend a coop Campaign
This is because Co-op Campaign doesn’t use dedicated servers and is based off whoever is hosting the game (Peer-to-Peer).
Though this should honestly change as it is quite literally unplayable for most.
Yeah. I was playing the campaign Solo just fine, but then when my friend wanted to play this morning he said he was lagging horribly, even though on my screen he looked fine. So we switched to him hosting, and…well, there ought to be dedicated servers for co-op games as well.
Even with peer-to-peer a lot of other games work better (Warframe, Shadow Warrior 2, Dying Light, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead, list goes on)
> Co-Op Latency: Co-op campaign play uses P2P networking and we’re aware that some players are reporting high latency and a poor experience when playing Campaign together. This is an area the team will continue to monitor but given the complexities of P2P networking and the underlying net code of Reach, the extent to which this issue can be addressed is still TBD.

Sounds like the situation is not hopeful
They kind of make it sound like giving us Dedicated servers to play off for Co-op is too hard?
The original Halo Reach actually had Campaign searchable in matchmaking and it ran off Dedicated.
I’m not sure if they converted the campaign to use the asynchronous model they moved Firefight to. If they’re still using the legacy synchronous model that’s going to cause latency.
If they can do it for firefight which runs fantastically with my mate from Czekoslavakia while I’m in Australia (we get 200 ping on L4D) why can’t they do it for campaign? Idk game development but sounds strange.
Literally the only reason I bought this game was to play it in co-op with my friend, completely unplayable experience.

It did? Man, why did that get cut out?

Hmm, I might have to try firefight with my friend to see if that runs any better compared to campaign.
And yes, if they managed to convert that to a better architecture then hopefully they’ll put in the same amount of work for campaign.
Story campaigns deserve the attention as well, shouldn’t be considered secondary.
That’s strange, because I was playing ODST on the 360 with a friend and we had horrendous lag.
So a little update on this, i know it wont help alot but might give some insight.
Ive tried the online coop with 4 friends, 2 failed completely (The lag was unbearable)
and two others it ran like a dream (less issues than LAN even).
The difference between these two groups was the ISP.
The two that failed had a different isp than me, but the same between them.
The other two had the same isp as me.
I dont mention distance because the 4 of them live in a 300 meter radius of each other (im the odd one out LOL)
Hope this helps
This is trash. People pay for this game (which a lot of us have already paid for on console) and they release an unplayable co-op experience.Campaign co-op was a driving factor of acquiring this game and it can’t even be done. It shouldn’t matter that the person i’m playing with is in New York and I’m west coast. The money is there. Fix it. Dedicated servers are absolutely achievable and the fact that they’re saying the ability to fix it is to be determined is disgusting. Waste of money. I would refund it if I could.
Has 343 acknowledged that this is an issue? I know there’s more serious things like audio but it’d be nice to know that figuring out co-op is in the pipeline.

No, it didn’t but it did have matchmaking. However, it still pisses me off that they still haven’t fixed it. That should be one of their top priorities
Same issue - really wish this fixed. I love playing the campaign with friends, but the lag is really bad for non hosts.
The thing I love about this is: The ORIGINAL Halo Reach, Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST worked just fine. it is only when 343 got their grubby little hands on the IP and released the MC collection that they broke it all. Every single game in the original console MCC was the same issue of input lag between my scottish friends and I (canadian) when I played those, whereas in the original games there was no such issue.
The stutter is new for the PC release, though. And five times as annoying.
I have been playing coop campaign with the same friend since Halo 3 on 360. He lives about 3000 miles away. The lag feels near identical when he hosts Reach. I am used to it.
The lag is still here Whoever is not the host gets the lag and delayed gameplay. Don’t know why this hasn’t been fixed yet.

Ditto. Between two friends and I, the latency issues are irreparable. It might not be something they’re able to fix due to the current quarantine situation with 343 employees working from home, but anything they can do to put out some kind of work to bring back dedicated servers would be great.

Its not the virus. Its their refusal to fix it.
They said they wont fix it despite making millions off the pc release. 343 hasnt changed much. A lot of people say 343 is doing better but thats an illusion. It looks like their doing alot but its because they dropped the bar so low so many times that anything good they do seems like amazing for some. Its not however.
They sold us an unfinished port of the game and everyone bought it. Forge and theater are STILL not in the game 5 months later.
