Plot Predictions

It’s really hard to nail any accurate prediction due to how little we’ve seen of the game since its announcement. From the offset, it doesn’t look to continue the main plot, but rather honor the legacy of Halo itself by revisiting old locations and giving it an old Bungie-esque feeling.

Does anybody have any clever plot predictions for Infinite? How will the Flood factor in, if at all? Will Cortana still be the main antagonist, and will the story revolve around saving her in some fashion, or possibly rebooting her to see the error of her ways? What will happen to the Covenant? Where is Locke in all of this?

So many questions!

Since Cortana had to fragment herself to stay alive a bit longer, defeat the Didact and save John, we will learn that the Cortana in Halo 5 is only her corrupted datas and she will be renamed as … THE CORTANAVIRUS !

Then, our mission will consist to find the good fragments of Cortana to bring her back. When Cortana comes back in full glory, we go kick her evil twin’s -Yoink-.

everyone lives happily ever after.

Sognante had some interesting ideas about finding Cortana’s good fragments. From the two trailers we saw, it looks like Chief is going to try to trap Cortana in his “weapon containment device”, i.e. Cortana’s old helmet chip. My best guess: The E3 Discover Hope trailer is the START of the game, picking up in the aftermath of a huge battle on the Halo ring between UNSC, Created, and… Banished. This battle is likely to have stopped the firing of the ring, or it’s a battle for the Mantle. Banished have now been hinted at in their Halo Mythos story guide and in Halo Wars 2. Personally, it would be ridiculous to bring back the original Covenant or Storm Covenant again, as literally their entire militaries have disbanded. Original Covenant is now the Swords of Sanghelios, led by Arbiter, and Storm was wiped out in H5.

Anyway, this huge battle has left our beloved old characters scattered, making it unlikely we’ll see many of H5’s characters like Locke, Blue Team, etc. 343i is trying to go back to Halo’s roots, focusing back on Marines and not a surplus of super-soldier characters. I also think the plot will remain simple, not over-stuffed like Halo 5. 343i cited H3 and Reach as story inspiration, which were both simpler, but grittier, games. 343i also said Halo Infinite is a spiritual reboot that new players can easily hop into. For that reason, I think a lot of the complications introduced in H4 and H5 will be sidelined or dropped, including characters, overall arcs, and heck, maybe even the Guardians.

Personally, I think the story will pick up right from Discover Hope. Our first mission is Chief battling the Banished, who are sucking their ship up in the tractor beam. He’ll return to the Halo ring to retrieve Cortana. Her motivations may still be as galaxy dictator, or feeling immense guilt for the fallout of her actions. Either way, he’ll trap her in his weapon containment, purging her from the Domain, and the two will have to traverse across Banished forged warlands to try to reverse the damage the Created have caused. With both of their trailers, I honestly don’t see any situation where Cortana doesn’t have a redemption arc in this game. Maybe she’ll even lose total control of the Created to Warden Eternal.

As for the Flood’s return… eh, hard to say. Halo usually sticks to two enemies. There’s always a Covenant faction of some sort, i.e. Banished, and now the Created. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Prometheans were replaced or wiped out with Flood or something. I would love to see the Flood, but every time the parasite returns, it makes the Forerunner’s entire Halo galaxy purge even more pointless and wasteful.

It seems like, to me, 343i wasn’t expecting all the immense story criticism to Halo 5, which put all their “Reclaimer Saga” storylines in jeopardy. So, while this is the sixth Halo game, it’s not the Halo 6 that would’ve initially followed Halo 5 and continued the Reclaimer Saga’s themes and stories. It’s a reboot, and I think a lot of things will be retconned as it paves a new path forward.

Quite the in-depth approach.

I’d hate to see the absence of the Flood…but you have a fair point about the galaxy purge inevitability. The Flood is on such an unstoppable level that the only theoretical way to stop them is incidental mass-galatical genocide. It becomes too predictable by that point.

I’m expecting 5 to be mostly retconned, though I do have some hope since 343 has repeatedly said this is continuing the Halo 5 story instead of just conveniently ignoring that and just calling it “Halo Infinite” featuring Master Chief. CE picked up in the middle of a war with a lot of backstory behind it so I think Infinite can do the same. Best case scenario I can think of is the cliffhangers of 5 and Wars 2 being mostly retconned or ignored since it seems there is a fairly significant time jump. Maybe some books or something can fill in those gaps.

I know everybody but me wants 5 to be retconned but it really shouldn’t be. Look at Star Wars. After The Last Jedi fractured the fanbase, 9 went out of it’s way to retconn it and ended up creating a massive mess of a movie that tried to please everyone and ended up pleasing virtually no one. Don’t want the same to happen to Infinite.

That being said, I’m expecting a very simple game plot wise, just like CE (I know many comparisons to 3 are being drawn but I’m getting more CE vibes to be honest). Stranded on a Halo, fight to get off. Covenant/Banished. Maybe Prometheans. Hopefully no Flood. That’s it. Big plot developments to come in Halo 7. Personally, I want big. Spirit of Fire, Osiris, Blue Team, Tom and Lucy, everything, with the ultimate cheesy Avengers-style fan service shot of them all teaming up to take on Cortana. But I know that won’t happen.

Maybe in the last halo?. Imagine in the end of halo saga ,chief dying for the greater good (which I think would be the best way to end of his story arc just like tony stark). Or cortana becoming a human and settle with john .

The Banished: There must be an alien faction in the game to allow us to pop some grunt birthday party head shots. With the storm covenant being defeated, I believe the Banished will be that faction. Some argue that the Banished being involved contradicts the 343 industries attitude towards a simple story ; however, the Banished are better choice because they have an established back story and a good reception from the community. What other covenant faction would they add? One from the books?.. I think that would be unlikely.

Two Cortanas: From the E3 trailer bonus audio we hear a noticeably different Cortana than that at the end of the trailer. The AI Chip “weapon containment device” with serial CTN 0453-0 is 1 more than the original Cortana’s serial CTN0452-9, these two facts build the case for a newer Cortana being used as a weapon against Skynet Cortana.

The Flood: I would say its confirmed from the audio field recordings alone. Listen for yourself there are some curious sounds. If you take lore into account The Flood have a necessity to appear because they are meant to be the final test for humanity before we attain the mantle of responsibility to protect the galaxy. Also, the ring the we are on in infinite, Zeta Halo, has deep history with the Forerunner Flood war and the first Gravemind. On top of all that we have two possible ways for the flood to return either through the ark with the Halo Wars 2 story arc or through a Zeta Halo containment breach.

The banished would have to be the replacement due to the covernant getting wiped out in 5 but who knows they may have more ships. Another factor is the covernant figures say otherwise they might be covernant remnants.

The best way to simplify everything is to reveal Cortana has been a puppet of the flood and/or the gravemind this whole time because of the logic plague (which has been heavily hinted about) and would’ve been given to her between the end of halo 2 and the end of halo 3. The Didact was also was given the logic plague from the gravemind of the Forerunner Flood war. Now he currently resides where Cortana does, in the Domain, and Cortana is in control of his army and quoted his speech in Halo 5. The lines between them blur and could mean The Flood is the puppet master. This could mean the created and the flood work together and potentially have hybrid enemies. If Infinite goes down this route, which I hope they do, It will help many story issues from halo 4 and 5 and tie them in with the previous trilogy. In this scenario the main flood conflict will be drawn out for more games but I do believe Cortana’s story arc ends in Infinite

I only have one prediction, (maybe it’s more like what I hope happens) and that is early to midway in the game’s campaign it will wrap up this whole Cortana thing and that’s when the real antagonist will emerge.

Okay I have two predictions, the game will be left on a huuuuge cliffhanger! One we will be excited for! I don’t know what that will be but I feel it happening and we won’t have to wait to long, like a year to get a DLC campaign to tie the saga altogether!

The Didact returns in composed form. The Warden Eternal changes sides, abandoning Cortana and burns her and the other A.I’s from the domain. Some of the A.I’s past their expiration date die, (Cortana doesn’t because plot armor) but she is severely weakened.

John gets a new chip from Halsey which he can use to trap Cortana and potentially heal her with its SPDR program.

Weakened, Cortana flees to zeta Halo. The UNSC tracks her and engages in combat on the ring. She probably has some forces left to defend her and in desperation tries to activate the ring.

Infinity is sacrificed to prevent the firing of the ring, most evacuate the ship before it crashes/blows up breaking the ring. Which is why Brohammer and John are floating in space.

The first half of the story would be dealing with Cortana’s forces and eventually reaching the control room where she resides. John retrieves Cortana and the SPDR enhanced chip does it’s work, healing Cortana.
(I do feel this further cheapens Cortana’s death in Halo 4, but thanks to Halo 5, that ship has sailed)

The second half would be fighting the Didact and his forces. He wants the Ring repaired so he can use it to destroy humanity once and for all.
Maybe He finds a way to hook up a composer to the Halo, if there is still composers around, and seeks to compose humanity as he wanted to do in Halo 4.

The remaining A.I Team up with humanity and the Swords of Sangheilious to stop the Didact.

Hopefully the Chief wakes up in his cryotube on the dawn after having suffered a nightmare.

Similar to how they inserted Cortana into the Didact’s ship to overthrow his control, Chief must now take New Cortana to Maethrillian and insert her into the Domain in order to overthrow Evil Cortana. Everything else is just gravy. I wanna see Maethrillian.

It’s taking place in Zeta Halo right? So I predict that the game is going to be hugely centered on the Halo and how Cortana will try to use it to destroy all non-created. We will also probably see a return of the Composer (because of the nature of the created.)

Kicking -Yoink!- like always!
