You really saw the maps today and thought: “nah, these aren’t great.” That’s crazy bro.
BR BTB should be a gametype though, I think it will be.

you cant quote something I didnt say. BR starts actively pushes against the usage of the sandbox gven the large amount of power given at the start of a match. Why should should I run for a precision rifle for a power boost when I have one? Why push for anything but a power weapon?
Its a social mode, efficiency isnt the name of the game.
The settings will evolve over time. It’s unlikely BTB in particular will be AR starts for long if it’s still that way when the game ships. And I’d predict it will be very likely BR starts will become standard on ranked, and tournament settings too.
But just remember, every Halo game started as AR (or SMG) starts, then shifted when the devs learned their lesson for the n-teenth time that AR starts will never be competitive if the game’s pistol isn’t a viable utility option. The only exception was Reach, because on Bungie’s final game they realized utility starts matter, so DMRs was standard from the start for most playlists.

Being a social mode doesn’t mean make it not competitive in the slightest.
There’s not much of a point in having a customs browser without Forge. If anything, we’ll be more likely to see it added to the game the same time Forge is (6 months after launch, potentially longer if certain rumours and leaks are to be believed). Not what I wanted from this game, but it’s the card we’ve been dealt.

A custom browser can still be very valuable without Forge. It would facilitate you to play 8v8 on Behemoth for starters and don’t count out that you can make custom game types without Forge which offer a whole lot of versatility.

Sorry you feel this way right off the bat. We all have bad Halo memories of open BTB maps where spawning with an SMG/AR felt powerless, however taking the layout of Fragmentation into account (and the increased effective range of the AR) it has a lot more versatility and cover to pick fights. I won’t be surprised if loadouts differ depending on the map so those BR/Commando starts will pop-up.
I’m curious though what you think are the weak points of the currently presented maps in your opinion since your statement that they aren’t great?

no where did I say there isnt a competative element. I said its social, and efficiency isnt a goal as a result. Any mode where there is a winner or loser is inherently competative. HOWEVER, BTB and social modes in general are more about player interaction and an element of a lack of control (why social modes have more items in the sandbox then ranked).
If you want ranked, play ranked as those are all about hyper competativness and an increase in control of the sandbox (hence why ranked sandbox is more limited).
I feel like BR starts are essential for ranked, but for social AR/Pistol looks like it might work a treat.
The real question is, what is the secondary going to be in ranked, AR or Sidekick? I’m thinking it will be AR in normal and maybe none or Sidekick in hardcore.

To be fair, the new pistol is so amazing that I don’t even care if BR isn’t available on spawn. Didn’t make any difference last preview during arena matches.
EDIT: For the record, I never liked the combo in games like Halo 4 where the pistol was awful.
