I love the idea of getting new people into the game just as much as the next guy but for me personally it meant a week of unplayable gametypes.
I won about 5% of my Firefight games because I had level 5 team mates that got 3 kills and had 0 REQ vehicles and weapons to use on bosses. As soon as the Free week ended I started winning games like crazy in Firefight and I ran into plenty of people with tanks and high level REQs that helped contribute to the game. I feel that everyone was complaining about Firefights difficulty solely due to the scrub players. The free week wasnt placed well with the release of Firefight and honestly turned me off to the game mode because of the awful team mates I kept getting.
Maybe next time, if there is a next time, they could make a week long game type in Arena that is exclusive to them and contains a few different game types and maps so they dont disturb the high level players that have been faithful to the game. I mean no one likes having their competitive rank destroyed on breakout because of some new people checking out the game. And no one likes coming to a game for the first time and getting destroyed by OG players. Anyways those are my thoughts, hopefully 343 can avoid this type of disaster again if they try to do another Free week.

What’s the point of free to play week if the player can’t experience the whole game? Lock the new players into one arena playlist looks dumb to me honestly.

What’s the point of free to play week if all the player does is match up against experienced members? They’ll drag their own team down and become target practice to everyone else.
Te best way is to have the new players match against each other.

But not all new players are new to Halo. Some people also immediately get the hang of it. Those new players that are average and above would destroy the new players that are below average anyway. So it doesn’t make a difference whether the new “below average” players is placed against new player only, and it penalize the new “above average” player in a way that he will be facing noob when he would like a gold/platinum challenge.
You want to confine new players to the Arena? I disagree. I introduced a few friends to Halo 5 with the last free week and we had a blast playing Warzone. I’m sorry a bunch of newbs damaged your Breakout CSR , but this isn’t the way to go about it.
You seem to just have a problem losing honestly, loosen up with the matches, you’ll lose some and you’ll win some, sure you go down on CSR but you don’t go down ranks only in the numbers, besides people in firefight sometimes see that pulling out a high rarity vehicle just isn’t worth it sometimes even if it is the beginning of the round, it turns out it’s actually a bit more fun for me without vehicles even if we lose
Perhaps the ability for matchmaking to throw the trial players together as a priority and fall back to standard MM if they can’t find a game. The main exception being if your part of a fireteam with friends, then you’ll have access to standard MM for the duration you are in a fireteam. The only disadvantage to this is that a trial based MM for firefight would most likely always result in a loss due to lack of REQs, but why screw over your player base that’s already forked out the money…even if it’s only for a week. If I’m trialing anything I would consider it more then fair if I got access to everything besides advanced MM, it’s about getting a taste for the game not necessarily winning every match.
Sorry but the free to play weekends are a good thing. Let people play Halo for a time and they might decide to buy it. If you are against new players coming to the game even for a free weekend then you shouldn’t be playing online at all.
I think new players coming into the series is a good thing, I do think Matchmaking needs to make things more enjoyable for them and make them play people of their skill and rank though. Constantly losing can deter them from playing or maybe inspire to get better.
They should give the free weekend players a big pack of REQs so they at least have something to use and contribute to the team with. I agree with the OP.

The idea behind free to play weekends is that people are given a chance to experience the game and hopefully they will decide to buy it based on their enjoyment of the game. Denying them access to playlists wouldn’t help this purpose. Your personal multiplayer experience is a worthy sacrifice in order to expand the player base. One weekend of bad matches certainly isn’t a disaster. However the fact that firefight basically requires reqs is a flaw in game design, not the fault of new players.

Yeah, “casual”. Seriously, other than the poor campaign, not one playlist/mode in Halo 5 is really what casual players want/need.
Warzone? Un-balanced sweat-fest. Stacked teams abound.
Firefight? Obscenely stacked in the AI’s favor. Nothing but a REQ sink.
Arena? Balanced sweat-fest.
“Unranked” Playlists? Not-so-secretly ranked.
A major issue is that one NEEDS REQs to even have a chance to succeed at Firefight. This is extremely unfair to new players and casual players, since they’re at a massive disadvantage.
Don’t blame new people for making you lose in Firefight, blame the devs for making Firefight a completely unfair REQ sink.

If i recall halo 3 had a multiplayer mode that was for everyone under the rank of sergeant. That way the new players could play with other new players if they chose to. I know there are other games that lock certain game modes until you reach a certain level to be sure you have an understanding of the game and have the exp/weapons/rp/ etc to be able to compete in those game modes.
