Playing the game from the UK can be enjoyable, however consistently playing at higher pings from 100-200 makes the game feel pretty uncompetitive especially when the skill based matchmaking makes most games feel like a ranked match. I know there are workarounds by digging through the files but I feel like adding a matchmaking filter like in previous halos would be a better alternative.
Region selection should be a standard practice in ā2022ā, I agree. A combination of bad ping and desync can lead one to believe they are a worse player than they actually are. Iām based in the āUSAā, and Iām always connecting to āUSā servers with roughly ā30-50ā ms on a hardline connection (the best results I can get) and I still see plenty of desync issues occurring every other game I play.
In some games, Iāve gone so far as to āavoid engagingā certain players in a match if I notice that my hits donāt register on them consistently, only focusing on my opponents who I donāt have desync issues with. Nothing is more demoralizing than hearing an āaudio triggerā for your melee hit, only to watch as the enemy walks away unscathed whilst retaining a full shield.
I wholeheartedly agree with this random person on the internet whomst I have never met before this occurrence. On a slightly more serious note, I believe it is (or at least should be) generally frowned upon when, due to high ping, it is possible to count between an action, say getting a kill, getting killed or placing a ping. This should not be condoned by developers and some reworking is much needed.
How is this not a thing yet? Itās in literally every other game, even their own previous Halo games. Theyāll probably add it after a couple of years and call it āfree contentā or ādlcā. Some communication from the devs on this would be much appreciated as itās a highly requested feature from around the world (I play from New Zealand). Halo games always seem to die out internationally as they mainly care about keeping US happy unfortunately
I did some minor tests this evening using geo filter on my router. Iām based in the UK with geo filter set to cover the 2 EU servers in Dublin and Amsterdamā¦the test was simply to determine if desync issues were as bad if I only connected to Dublin despite both of them giving me ping of approx 20ms.
The only conclusion I can draw from the test was that the game is trying to force me on to Amsterdam servers in approx 80% of gamesā¦I know this because the geo filter shows the server it tries to connect to then fails to connect at the loading map screen because the Amsterdam server is outside the geo filter range.
I managed to get about 3 or 4 games in on Dublin server before I got bored of failing to connect, so restored the geo filter to both servers and didnāt get any connection issues again. This makes me ask why is the game forcing me on to Amsterdam servers when Iām much closer to Dublin geographically despite the ping being about the same.
In terms of desync, I have no conclusive evidence to suggest either server was worse than the other and it is clearly not ping related, however (and I. At get shot down in flames for this) but I noted the names of the players that I seemed to have most desync issues with during the games, and every single one of them was on PC. This is just an observation and Iām not claiming crossplay is the cause of desync but it is a very strong coincidence and needs investigating.
