343 has stated that this is the last standalone release in the foreseeable future but is the beginning of the next ten years for halo.
I know there’s not point in saying this as this post will get buried in a matter of minutes but I’m begging that you will keep releasing new halo games. Halo shouldn’t be turned into a live service game as each halo game that brings a different story also brings different gameplay, mp, forge, and new features. While some of these can be achieved through DLC, many of them can’t. Not to mention that there won’t be nearly as much hype and each dlc release won’t be as big as a new game. I feel like this could spell the end to the franchise as these ‘ten year plans’ never work out.
At best, we get a complete game at launch (which there are rumours that the mp will be separate from the campaign) and all the updates and dlc makes the game last 5 years (because people will loose interest in playing the same game over and over, so there only option to fully rekindle the playerbase is to make a new game) and they release a new halo game, leaving infinite behind with maybe an odd update here and there.
At worst, the game launches broken (which I’m worried will happen) with missing content that it important and then the next year or so is used to make the game be what it should’ve been at launch and after that, for maybe 2 years or less, we get DLC’s which are not worth their price and the game along with the IP is put to rest.
The fact that we already know that ray tracing is coming in a patch after release doesn’t give me hope.
Edit: 343 has debunked the rumour of mp missing at launch! However, when they were asked if crucial elements would be there at launch, they didn’t give a direct answer! If anything, I’m more worried now…
Yeh I’m concerned about ‘live service’ too, I don’t want a game kept alive by online only features. I just want a complete game at launch, not something that will have ‘content’ arrive by ‘updates’ or ‘paid’ MT type systems like awful Battle pass’s, loot box’s…though I’m glad they said there’s no more gambling loot box’s.
When did live service start meaning “incomplete game”?
better not be online only…that will suck. already had that bs with breakpoint. uninstalled never to play again.

Yea, that’s always my thought.
All live service means is instead of most of the publishing studio moving on to thr next full game when something goes gold, it’s they all just stay on the same product…
Live service = incomplete game is such a fundamental misunderstanding of software development it’s nuts.

Go look at games like Fornite. Tons of content ‘milked’ over time, games are generally stripped to their core basic’s and forced to mostly online only.

Most - not all but most - live service games tend to use that idea as an excuse for releasing an incomplete game by saying ‘we’ll add more’. Plus, that was the worst case scenario.

They confirmed it’s going to be a 10 year live service game. 343 is going down the Bungie Destiny route which is pretty ironic…
I’m not too worried if halo becomes live service. Judging by how 343i handled the MCC battle pass in that it was both free, and you could unlock the previous season content (so its not timed like destiny locking you out), I’m not as worried.

Yeh seems it, Bungie already abandoned Destiny 1 for their 10 year plan, it seems a bit risky/foolish of 343i to assume Halo Infinite should last 10 years when Halo does better when it makes unique stories through different games that try to focus on innovation. I don’t want a game in 10 years where it ceases to work while forcing the game into online only ‘restrictions’ or where 3/4 of the game is download only…and maybe lost forever if 343i ever shut down the downloads/servers.
I think this is where the video game industry has been heading for a while (Always Online Xbox One). Development costs have been rising so there is very little incentive for more frequent AAA titles, and with gaming technologies plateauing in performance, the long-term-support model is all that developers have left. Not to mention that physical media is also going away due to digital purchases and game sizes are outpacing disc capacity, so digital delivery just makes the case stronger for live service. I suppose that’s why a new engine was built for Infinite since 343i will be using it extensively for Halo game play at 120FPS/4K for the foreseeable future.

I agree from the battle pass / unlock system standpoint, that if it is the same as MCC it wouldn’t be annoying and costly but I’m really worried about how they plan on making a profit, especially if it’s meant to last 10 years. The fact that they’ve already dabbled with the idea of having a battle pass like system makes we worry as it’s not too much extra work to monetise it and make things limited time.
Every live service has failed; only after years of support do those games have the content and polish expected at launch. I’m hoping by this statement they mean that a complete game will be polished, ready to go in November and every couple years we will see new expansions, think along the lines of ODST, adding more to the game. I think this could be a very smart way of going about continuing the main story, maybe doing side story expansions (one focused on arbiter elsewhere for example), and adding on to and supporting the mp scene for a while instead of relaunching it with each new game.
A live service game on paper sounds really good, a game is launched and given regular content updates to help it grow and expand. The problem is is that most live service games are released with little to no content and receives said content through its live service and is often through micro transactions. Examples such as star wars battlefront 2, battlefield V and even halo 5 are games that have done this. If Halo Infinite releases full of content I don’t have problem with live services as long as they are not heavily monetized and releases with a good amount of content. In a perfect world we can see 343 add new armors, maps, weapons, vehicles, game modes and maybe some story expansions if done the right way.
I want to be able to play Infinite Campaign couch co-op offline like the good old days!
Here’s the quote I read:
> “Halo Infinite is the start of our platform for the future,” he said. “We want Infinite to grow over time, versus going to those numbered titles and having all that segmentation that we had before. It’s really about creating Halo Infinite as the start of the next ten years for Halo and then building that as we go with our fans and community.”

> This does not mean that Halo Infinite is a live service game, a la Destiny. But it does mean that new story experiences will be told underneath Infinite’s umbrella, and it also means Infinite will be evolved technologically for quite a while.

It’s actually funny that they’re referring to Destiny.

Exactly! It’s a double edged sword really. It can be just as beneficial as it can be detrimental. I’ve stated this before in another post, but Halo has been struggling to stay relevant for a while now in the mainstream FPS market. Of course there’s no way I could know this for sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this was 343’s last chance to get Halo back in the spotlight. If this flops, Microsoft might pull the plug and the Halo IP could potentially be put in limbo. However, that is the VERY worst case scenario and I’d like to think that they wouldn’t be so stupid as to make core features of the game revolve around micro-transactions. (_cough_ Req Packs _cough cough)_

When EA figured out live services exist. That’s about when the definition switched.

They didn’t. JB Linken forgot to put the bottom paragraph out of the quote
