Please do something different about personal AI

When the personal AI announcer things were first revealed a while ago I was very, very turned off by them. It’s incredibly annoying to me. I don’t need some “personality” in my ear giving unfunny jokes and colorfully commentating everything and being a blunt stereotype of itself. It’s pretty much the worst thing I could ever imagine to be in a video game. But I didn’t panic, because I knew that these were probably just an extra flair that was optional.

But to my horror, you can’t turn them off without turning off ALL dialogue, and they’re the ones who call out important information like weapon spawns and objectives.

I just want the comms guy from Halo 5 back if we have to have someone fill this role. If not, give me a normal, serious, military-esque AI that never jokes and never engages in cliches that bluntly announce its personality quirks. BUTLR isn’t quite that.

I’ve found them all to be unimaginative shapes and the voices are beyond goofy/silly. It hurts listening to them. Hopefully we can either unlock new AI’s, or customize their voices/shapes

Won’t be ready for launch but they are implementing a system where you have more control over what AIs say. Imagine you can have them call the weapons, but won’t add unecessary commentary like “Way to go Spartan” or “Over Yonder” for example.

Can’t wait til this game gets out of open beta in 8 months…after a year delay.

But seriously. I agree with OP 100%. I want to hear Jeff. I want to hear my AI talk about weapon spawns and objectives–but I don’t want goofy pats on the back. I don’t want to hear Spartan chatter if I can help it.

How could have they not predicted people would be annoyed by this stuff? Really concerning.

Forced new threat detection system. Forced voices in my head. Forced to unlock basic colors for our armor. What else are they going to force on us?

Because some people also enjoy it? All the players I’ve interacted with have enjoyed the AI.

That said 343 has acknowledged that they’re going to add customization options for how much your AI speaks.

.
PSA:

  • You can go into audio settings and turn Dialogue all the way down to zero. This will also mute spartan chatter and Jeff “OVERKILL” Steitzer, but Jeff is currently MIA from BTB anyway.

Fair enough. I personally don’t like any of them (basic shapes are lame to me and the voices are silly/goofy to me), and know many who agree with me. BUT, on the other hand, I’ve heard a lot of good feedback on it as well, some people saying they enjoy the chatter (which I do, I just can’t stand their annoying bubbly voices) and quite a few people saying they enjoy the bubbly personalities. Not everyone is going to be appeased, that’s the way of things.

Thanks for the info that they’re definitely gonna add customization options for what they say. Do you know if that also includes customizing the shapes (like humanoid, different shapes, etc?).

I want to say I heard them briefly mention it on their twitch stream Friday night. Scratching my head where I read it though.

Here.

In the section on feedback regarding audio they mention they received a lot of feedback on how players want more control over how much AI/Spartans speak during a match.

They didn’t mention anything like that, but that would be good feedback to mention here on the forum or on a survey if you get one. Wouldn’t mind customizing the shape of Butler

I just bookmarked that tech preview list you linked, it made my day (and my sons’). I’ve been searching for that and it answers a LOT of questions I’ve seen floating around in, literally, every post on here. I appreciate it. Glad to see that a lot of issues and comments from here and the game are actually on that list. Hopefully I do get the survey today so I can mention customizing the AI (such as humanoid, etc). It looks like they DO have some options coming at launch and post launch.

Thanks!

I love the color commentary and cheesy jokes. Seriously, I can’t get enough. I want more.

However, I would like some additional technical information. I’ve made the suggestion that AI could communicate motion tracker information (quick and dirty: number of bogies within distance at clock points). Not sure what else could be done, but I’m sure there are things.

If you’re not into it, I wouldn’t worry about it. You’re likely to get a toggle.

Thanks! But I will note that they only ever acknowledge the complaint. They don’t confirm any plans of making changes. The only thing I could find is the following:

> Lastly, players expressed an interest in controlling how often their Personal AI spoke and what kind of information they spoke about. This isn’t something we’d be able to do for launch, but we’d like to give more control to players over the frequency of flavor lines as well as increase/decrease informational lines, such as weapon pickup lines. This has a lot of benefit for players wanting more to help make the game more accessible to them or even to just turn different types of feedback off all up.

I just bolded the part for you. While at launch you won’t be able to adjust how much your AI talks, they’re looking to add that post launch.

Did you selectively reply on purpose? I never said it was a bad feature. I said it was bad they didn’t even consider making it optional until people complained.

“Because some people enjoy it” doesn’t address my point in the slightest. Great that you and your friends like it. I’m not trying to get the feature removed–don’t worry.

While I do enjoy the AI voice lines myself, I would probably use an option to toggle AI chatter on/off, It would be nice to see this implemented.

I’m sure there will probably be an AI that’s exactly what you’re looking for later on. A “man of few words”, deadpan serious military type AI.
Or, a volume setting for AI

That’s a great idea, I’d love auditory warnings when enemies are behind you or on your radar

Agreed, all of them are trying WAY to hard to be funny or cheesy and a lot of their lines give me the cringe. I really hope at launch they have ones that are more straight to the point and less goofy. BUTLR is the only one I can stand but even then he has is moments.
