343 has made the elites amazingly intimidating because they reworked their size and models. The only reason that playing as an elite in the earlier Halos was allowed was because they were changed to be essentially the same as Spartans, which made them kind of a joke in the campaign.

Bungie took a step back in the right direction for elites in Reach, and then 343 went farther with 4.
