First off, what is motion blur? It’s the slight blur effect seen during movement in Halo Reach. A good example to see it is to look down and -Yoink!-. I don’t know about you guys, but it isn’t very appealing to me. Also, try not to include any film grain effect either (the grainy effect overlaying gameplay), Mass Effect 2 is notorious for having tons of it. The Reach Beta had a good deal of it. Thankfully Bungie toned it down, but it was still present. They both should be totally removed.
At least leave a slider bar in the options to allow us to tune each effect to the players taste. Like this,
Motion Blur Amount
0%-------X-----------100%
Film Grain Amount
0%—X---------------100%
Of course if this feature is present, both of my sliders would be set to zero.
The film grain… I can’t even see it on my TV, but it’s in all screenshots uploaded to BNet and I find it intensely annoying. I always thought it was a problem with their renderer or with the use of the JPEG format – never knew it was part of the actual graphics engine. Tricky to remove, too – a Selective Gaussian Blur kills it, but also removes some details that I want to keep…
I don’t notice any motion blur, but yeah, I’d love to see 343 kill the film grain.
It didn’t bother me in Reach, but I know people who would get a little nauseous or get headaches from watching/playing while motion blur was enabled. I think it should either be a toggle option or removed entirely. Having it optional seems like it would create some difficult problems for the devs. I’d be entirely okay with it being stricken from H4.
Definitely scrap the film grain. I don’t know who came up with using that but it was a tremendously stupid idea. I’d prefer motion blur be removed as well bt I’d be happy even if they just toned it down a great deal.
You know, I have no problem with motion blur, party because I use to play a lot of Crysis 1, and other games with lots of motion blur, and I’m kind of also use to motion blur because of riding motor cycles. If Motion blur makes you a little nauseous or headaches from playing, might I suggest on snacking on some ginger snaps, as both a SCUBA diver and some one who has a sister who get’s motion sick on long trips, ginger snaps help. But I also agree with the option to tone up or down your motion blur, and your film grain.
Also, Eben Gibon King, Film Grain is mostly to help simulate the effects of darkness with our eyes, which does kind of look just like it, but there’s a fine line between too much, and not enough, when I play the left 4 dead games, I all ways ton film grain down down to 10%, which is a better, and clearer image, but still has the film grain in the dark areas.
I’m not for the complete removal of Motion blur and Film Grain, but I am for the option to either turn them off, or adjust them to what players like. Also, OP, in your opening post, you put “Blue” instead of “blur”.
Rolling flame, they have both a purpose, I pointed out the purpose for film grain, motion blur is along the same lines, but with movement.
I really didn’t have a problem with film grain in Reach or ME2, but I know people can get a headache or something from it, so I think it should at least be an option like you said.

Some games use motion blur to cover up slightly lower framerates, so they would dip the game to 25 ish FPS and add motion blur to make it less noticeable to get that extra bit of performance.
I don’t get a headache or anything I just dislike it.

I honestly have no problem with the motion blur thats on Halo Reach, maybe cause I’m just use to it. But still, I think it should be an option to tone up or down on the blurring effect.
Halo runs at 30fps. Because it is that slow we need to have a lot of blur to make actions seem smooth.
If halo were 60fps it could afford to have half the blur to maintain the fluidity.
If there weren’t blur the game would feel very choppy and unnatural. Humans have blur in real life for the same reason.
> I liked the motion blur and film grain. I find both of those aspects to be aesthetically pleasing. They don’t alter gameplay.

It’s called feedback, if you like them then great. We have the ability to voice our opinions on anything.
