Playlist populations - yea or nay

Should Guardians show population counts in the playlist browser? Why?

To be clear, I don’t care one way or another if it returns – it doesn’t bother me in the least. I guess I’m just looking for more clarity into what you get from it – what’s popular? What provides the best odds of finding a match?

I never understood the appeal, personally. I always play the game types I want regardless of what others are doing. So I’m wondering… what purpose does it serve? Why do you want to see it?

I think this is more of a way for people to easily see where their best chances are at finding a quick match. I don’t mind it and it doesn’t get in the way of anything so I say keep it. (It makes you know that your not the only one out there on the simulation deck.)

Yeah, this, so you actually know your chances of finding a match, and how quick.
I mean, some people do like Proving Ground (wat), and I’ve seen the playlist at below 30 people. What if wanted to play that and didn’t know that it might take a really long time to find a game?

It doesn’t hurt anything really, and it’s a positive addition. I don’t see why we should scrap it.
‘Yea’

I’m actually interested in the effects of removing the counter.

People might not shy away from low population playlists “just because it has a lot population”, which in turn would result in those playlists having a higher population.

I understand the social experiment that could be conducted in this proposal, and it could have it’s uses. But the population count also has it’s uses. It’s there for a reason; so that people can see if they can even get in a game.

Gears Of War 3 does this and I find it very useful as the game does not have really high populations like before. However, yes some people may avoid low population playlists which could be a problem.

I see no reason to remove them, the whole point of them is to see how many people are playing, which are the most popular and which at the least popular and which ones I will find a game in fast.

Plus, we can’t really give feedback on playlists without knowing the populations. Playlists like Proving Ground should be removed because of how low the population is. Removing it makes room for more permanent playlists which can actually maintain a healthy population.

Well how about a solution. I honestly don’t care either way but when you jump into MM and before you enter into anything and you have the playlist sitting there. Why not just show how many players are actually online together, this should include those in Customs, MM, Theater, Forge, Firefight/Spartan Ops and Campaign. Halo 4 never did that but Reach, Halo 3 did so return that but keep the counters off the playlists.

Either way if it’s there then thats good if not, that’s good, either way I’m not hurt over it.

True or just add that playlist and combine it into one of the healthy playlists, that way if it ever comes up and people want to play it, then they can. Thus by doing so, makes room for more permanent playlists yes but it doesn’t throw that particular gametype/playlist combination out either. It will clearly rotate like everything else. There are ways to make it work.

Yes, to know if the playlist is well enough populated to start searching. Also it shows which playlists are popular and which not.

I live in Vietnam so it’s hard to find a game where I have good ping. In past halo games (not 4 for some reason) I could just go to the playlist with the most amount of people and search for a match with good connection.

If you did playlist searching this way, only the population in the headers is relevant - which would avoid the issue of people staying out of low-population lists. The ability to search across multiple lists removes the need to display population numbers for individual lists.

I like seeing how many people are in a playlist because it lets me know how much potential variety there is. For example, back in the days of Reach I loved playing team doubles. But any time the player count was low, I’d routinely get into games vs the same people (sometimes consecutively) even if I backed out of the lobby after the game trying to find new opponents. This isn’t that big of a deal in the more popular variants, but it’s still nice to have nonetheless.
