So a couple of days ago I was visiting a friend and played a round of Halo 5: Guardians despite the fact that neither of us have a Gold subscription and it was a few days after Microsoft stopped offering free online.
Is there something we missed?

I tried it the morning after the weekend and it didn’t work for me, so this isn’t universal for all people.
Check both of your accounts and see if maybe it auto renewed or something. Do you have credit cards linked to either of the accounts?

My friend disabled the auto-renew on his account recently and hasn’t been getting charged for Xbox Live since. However, despite that, he’s still able to play online right now.
I’ve never used my card for Xbox Live, and I cannot play online despite my friend being able to.

Could be he has time left before his subscription expires. Not sure though. Easiest thing to do is to check your friends purchase records on his Microsoft account. That will tell you the last time he auto renewed and give you an idea of how much time he should have had left.

I was with him when he turned off the auto-renew a couple of months back and he hasn’t had multiplayer privileges from then until that short free period. However, for whatever reason, his period never expired.
There’s no logical reason that I can see as to what’s going on.

Well, technically I can only take advantage of this while at his place as I’m still being blocked from playing online here.
Microsoft, charge for everything, that annoying to be paying for cable licenses display port 1.4 and HDMI 2.0.
You should probably have him contact support if he’s not sure what’s going on. Might wanna be careful though. I wouldn’t put it past them to charge his account or worse if they find out he’s been getting free gold when he’s not supposed to.

This is very true, though ultimately he would only be taking advantage of something he had no way of preventing. Still, I will let him know about that just in case Microsoft does try something.
help me the game won.t let me play
lol…don’t think they can force you to pay if it’s a glitch in the system, it’s not like they are losing much over one guy getting free mp for a bit, they already have billions.
It could be GameShared, Gameshare is sharing with a friend or profile which makes you be able to play someone’s game online without buying it I did that with one of my trusted friends so we could play Dyling Light but that could be the reason why if not idk maybe it’s a bug of some kind.
