I am playing from Thailand. I am getting better at Halo And i am also becoming more aware of network lag (especially getting killed behind walls (or not being able to kill one-shots).
Are there any strategies to deal with lag?
Is lag a fair problem (that is, are all players equally impacted)? Or American players are always at an advantage (just an example).
How can you find out quickly whether a game will be laggy (or the opposite)?
Thanks
PS anybody else here playing from Thailand (or Southeast Asia)?
ITS your latency to the servers I’m from Australia and we are between one and two shots behind when playing Americans the only strategy that works for me is get behind cover once you get hit with the first bullet because by the time the servers catch up two more bullets have hit you through the wall and you end up dying ! You just have to work hard on positional play to flank enemies cause it’s really hard winning your 1v1s when they have such a big advantage! Usually for me WZ AND BTB have the best connection though it’s probably because it’s not so intense and close quarters, anything in ranked is hard especially as you go up towards plat diamond it gets almost impossible to compete
You will only be connecting to really far away datacenters (like those in America) if you search on Expanded. If you do connect to an American data center, then your information will take much longer to reach than an American player, so you may experience lag that puts you at a disadvantage. The only way around this is to make sure you connect to more local data centers, by searching on Focused. However, you may run into the issue where not enough people are playing to form games on those local servers.
So it’s a trade off. If you want to be able to find more games and find them faster, you’ll have to search on Balanced and Expanded. If you do, however, your games are more likely to be laggy. Playlists that will be most affected by lag will probably be the ones with lowest populations. Here is a list of the playlists ranked by their populations last week.

Yep I can back up what JC is saying as I’m playing from Australia too and feel your pain there OP, just have to try to play smart which can be hard sometimes given we are at a disadvantage but hang in there, take the good with the bad and adapt and overcome if you can, maybe join a Spartan Company to play as a team as going solo hurts and halo is a team game especially in Halo 5.
Thanks. I get it. I guess I have to play on “focused”. Does anybody have any idea where are the data centers are and how many? Probably not in Thailand haha
I guess I can stop playing now. And wait for Halo 6. Maybe Halo 6 works better for non-Americans
---- EDIT
old response (I did not see the previous responses …)

Thanks!

I have reached Diamond 1 (after 156 games). previous season Platinum 1 … So that is not good news … it is hard enough already lol

Does anybody know how that works? Am I connecting to a server in Seattle (Microsoft/xbox headquarters)? That would be quite far from Thailand (and Australia)! And obviously would give a big advantage to the Americans (and that is also the reason most of the good players are Americans ?). Just asking
Oh well, I tried “focused”. No luck. I can not find any match. Looks really like I am the only player in south east asia who plays (ranked) halo 5 haha
Worst part is that “focused” gives up after 10 minutes or so, instead of trying to “search forever”. That is pretty annoying.
Get friends to play with mate, use headphones/mic to help / support each other. I’m not a good Halo player and have nearly thrown H5 away so many times from getting destroyed all the time but then I tried all the playlists and while I felt safe in WZFF I got into ranked Slayer and found I did best in Arena matches, and where I found a good group of players that I now play with regularly and this has been my saving grace! Even if I have bad connection we play as a team and have each others backs and that goes a long way when your the one with the connection disadvantage…
> Sucks that you’re at the mercy of them adding more data centers or not.
Yes, that’s sad. Such a server shouldn’t cost that much, right?
> use headphones/mic to help / support each other.
Don’t get me started on this … This is another problem, rarely people using a microphone … but I suspect that this is due to lack of English skills in my time-zone. And in general I am not happy when I have English speaking in the team, because then it will be very laggy for sure!! haha
As somebody said already, I probably have to focus on the “positional” game now. But for that I probably have to watch a lot of “Pro” videos, but that is boring. Or maybe I need a coach …
So people is the US will have an advantage just due to the fact most wont have trouble connecting as you will which gives in lag. Sadly I don’t know of a way to combat this besides hard connection and hoping for the best
What have you done at your end OP? Example do you have a wired internet connection to your xbox, do you have the best package that your internet provider can supply in terms of speed etc, have you done port forwarding to ensure when you play Halo 5 has priority over all other internet devices, have you set your TV / Monitor up for gaming etc. All these things can help also…

Yes, I have done my part. However, I have learnt now whatever you do, you will not be able to overcome the speed of light. No matter how optimized your internet is, it will be at least 250ms to New York (from here), I guess. You might be able to shave off a few ms …
My ping from Thailand to
San Francisco 220-230ms
New York 290-300ms
Frankfurt 200ms
London 230ms
Sydney 140ms
Singapore 50ms
Hong Kong 90ms
Tokyo 130ms
So what we really need is a server in Singapore (and maybe a way in Halo to restrict/connect to regions). Shouldn’t cost that much …

Yeah I’m hearing you! I hope they do something about it here in Australia too mate, all the best and maybe I’ll see you on the battlefield some time
It is mind boggling, how much could be a server per month, plus some bandwidth … Maybe it is not a server limitation. Maybe the Halo developers are not able to scale the whole thing … who knows …
