Playing as our own Spartan in Campaign?

I realize that one of the most common complaints about Halo 5 was that it didn’t focus on Chief, and many of us (myself included) genuinely disliked being forced to play as Locke and Osiris for the majority of the campaign. I still dislike that experience, and am looking forward to having Master Chief back in the spotlight for Infinite. However, with that said, I don’t think that not playing as Chief was the main issue, so much as being forced to play as characters we didn’t like (and how the marketing was arguably a massive bait-and-switch).

Looking back on Halo: Reach, the implementation of players’ own Spartans in the Campaign actually feels like one of the game’s strongest points, and I know plenty of other fans who feel the same way. Being able to “project” our own Spartan into the story made the experience that much more engaging, and ultimately fulfilled the “silent protagonist” function even better than Chief did. Aside from the fact that Halo 5 was marketed as a Master Chief story, I feel like the experience would’ve been better-received, overall, if the game had let players play as their own Spartan IV as part of Fireteam Osiris, as opposed to being forced to play as Osiris. The same story could’ve been told, but from a Reach-like narrative perspective.

I fully expect Infinite to focus immensely on Master Chief in response to Halo 5’s negative reception, no question about that. At the same time, I can’t help wishing that the franchise could revisit the idea of selling a narrative through a 3rd-person narrative, and let players be a part of the story, again.

TL;DR- Halo 5 might’ve been better if players played as their own Spartans as a part of Osiris, instead of being forced to play as Locke, Buck, etc… Reach’s use of players’ Spartans was engaging and refreshing, and I’d love to see 343 take that narrative approach, again, in the future.

I suspect on first play through it’ll be Chief focused for anyone hosting then probably allow customisable armours after the campaign is complete.
Reach did this well but with Reach whatever armour we picked became Noble while Chief will never change so I suspect it’ll be just a cosmetic only type thing. Plus don’t care much for having AI bots in co-op to fill the 3 players when there not there so drop in co-op would be better then players can choose their armour.

If they let the players be part of the story then I don’t think that that’s Third-person narrative? More like First-person narrative

But yes, the idea of being able to customize your own soldier in campaign sounds neat but may also ruin the lore. Still, having action-adventure fighting sequences to be considered non-canon would be better than the focus of Fireteam Osiris. I feel that they should only be playable for 2 missions max (with the exception of Buck)

I think for canon reasons it might just be random Spartans on the Infinity for reasons why splitscreen, online coop exists while the story will probably be solely with the chief while the Spartans sort of floating in the background somewhere with the other teams being controlled by AI.

I doubt it. Though, perhaps, if we could change the armor Chief is wearing for like, combat bonuses in between missions that might be cool.

I would hope if anything (If not a departure from what we are expecting from past titles), possibly a free roam as our MP Spartans after we beat the campaign.

Similar to Spartan Ops in H4, but not as linear.

What I would truly like is more of an RPG experience where we level up our accuracy with specific weapons and unlock armor with stats. That, though may never happen with a mainline entry in the franchise.

its already been stated that 6 will focus on the chief. it would be more likely that our spartans show up in the campaign as a cameo, maybe during a cutscene. or, even better, what if there was a mission where we get to fight along side our own spartans

That would actually be a pretty fun way to add replayability, like a “New Game +” for the canpaign. Any option to use our MP Spartans in a narrative mode would be cool, even if it’s just the same encounters without the dialogue/cutscenes/etc…

What if they took like an improved, Spartan Ops-style narrative approach, and mixed it with a more permanent version of the card system from Warzone? Not exactly a real “RPG” experience, but it’s not too far-fetched.

Subtle side-grades and alternate weapon-types could still be a fun way to diversify the experience.

One of my favorite aspects of Reach was playing as your own Spartan. When they do decide to replace chief, I would like it to be with a customizable character. They could still have full voice acting. Mass effect is a good example of what I’m thinking

I mean, I would love to see my Spartan doing epic stuff like in Reach. It made the story more engaging and made you feel as if you’re part of it. However, I will have to disagree with that idea. We want the campaign to be focused solemnly on Chief, playing only as Chief (other established characters as co-op partners too). The only way I would be ok with this is with some sort of bonus missions that you unlock after completing the main campaign. You and your fireteam follow orders and complete missions but that will also unveil a bigger mystery. Just making our Spartan follow orders makes it dull and uninteresting, but making him unveil something big and important makes it right.

In fact… why not a Spartan Ops thing where our Spartan eventually finds Mendicant Bias’ core in Zeta Halo? Even if we don’t find the AI itself, we can still find it’s core. Just imagine the possibilities. Imagine your Spartan with your fireteam looking curious and ominously to it’s core.

Maybe in a spin-off title like Halo Reach was. I rather the infinite would focus on Chief perspective and possible future game would present customizeable character properly.

Hell yeah that would make for an awesome game, not even as the campaign. have master chief as the campaign, but make a game type to play as your own spartan on side missions or side story like in Halo 4 Spartan Ops.

I would want it where first player was the chief and the following 3 players were your own SIV
i think it would be fun to see people fight over who’s not the chief

This makes me wish Spartan Ops would return honestly. It wasn’t a very interesting mode but being able to put yourself and your friends into the boots of a Spartan 4 fireteam was a pretty cool experience. Hopefully 343 considers this when developing Infinite. I’d love to see them combine the free roam aspect with this mode, if free roam is a part of the game.

i like the idea of creating your own spartan but i think that would have to be in a game all of its own kind of like halo reach.

I’ve always wanted Player 2, 3 and 4 to be their own customised Multiplayer Spartans. No need for a canon explanation. Just DEW IT

They have already said that it will focus on Chief’s story, not someone else’s.

I’d like to play as my Spartan alongside Chief if I were player 2 in someone else’s game, but that’s about it.

Sure but I think it be optional for friends to join in with their custom Spartans/Elites then keep Chief only as default player one for anyone playing it for the first time so that the player can play it the proper way first while "new game+) would just be custom Spartan host acting like the chief.
