Removing player collision is the biggest L on Infinite yet…and that is saying something.
Honestly yea, from what I saw everywhere on the forums, reddit, twitter, youtube and wherever else, people were not split about wanting player collision back. Never once in my life have I bumped into a teammate and died and blamed the player collision. It’s either my fault for not being more aware, or my teammates fault for sandbagging. Removal of collision doesn’t seem like a feature that was ever genuinely asked for in any serious way in the past, so it’s super weird to see 343 make the change now and firmly stand by it after blowback. Nothing to do but complain and wait, I suppose.
You’re right, it’s sure is a slippery slope. Halo 7 will be played entirely with nerf guns and all the Spartans will have safety goggles.
I also prefer without collisions… it is too annoying to be stuck behind someone, or not being able to take shelter because someone does not move, and let’s not talk about the various trolls …
I understand this may sound “unrealistic” but it is a small price to pay for a more enjoyable game.
I also understand that “they have always been there”, in fact they have sometimes been a source of problems, but in the end you can also make some changes if it improves the overall gameplay.
Regarding the FF I have only two words: grenade rain
Absolutely agreed on the removal, in H5 in addition to the enemy was a continuous fight against the grenades of teammates, and in previous Halo titles, various betrayals for power weapons, or the usual -Yoink!- trolls
Generally I have accepted all the split decisions without saying anything about it even if I disagree. Player collision is something that gave me my favourite moment ever playing Halo so it is sad for me to see it go. I’ve only ever seen it used in matchmaking to create hilarious and memorable moments. Even if occasionally it has caused me to be bumped off of the map!
I did think more people would want it back than not, but I’ll just accept the decision is here to stay.
I’m with the OP on this. At the very least make it an option for people in custom games.
I’ve always liked that players aren’t allowed to occupy the same space. And to counterpoint the main argument of “it fixes trolling!” let me tell you, trolls will always find a way to mess with others. Whether it’s team killing or something else, people who want to ruin things for others will always find a way.
To be honest, I’m a bit puzzled by all these people suddenly coming out of the woodwork, lamenting how annoying colliding with teammates was in the past. Because I never remember that happening much. When it did happen, it just was part of the experience of, you know, existing as a physical object in the game world. If I run into another physical object, of course I should collide with it.
Sure, the natural knee-jerk reaction to running into something is mild annoyance, but that’s a very petty reason to wish it never happen, given that within ten seconds of the collision, you probably don’t even remember it happened. Or if it resulted in your death, after the match you don’t even remember it happened. The only reason you would ever remember it in the long term is if it was particularly memorable, and if it was particularly memorable, it probably makes for a very good memory. Certainly, my biggest memories about player collision are pretty fond: like colliding with another player mid-air on the Narrows man cannons, resulting in both of us plummeting to our deaths. That is hilarious. However rarely that happened, it enriches the experience more than the annoyance from a billion mundane collisions could ever tarnish it.
I’m worried that removal features like friendly fire and player collision, because they occasionally lead to mild frustration, ends up sanitizing the gameplay in a way that leads to a much less memorable experience. The compression of my long term memory has erased every mundane detail of my years of playing Halo. What is left are all the unusual events, not always positive, resulting from the idiosyncrasies of the games. What would be left if the games sought to protect me from ever getting annoyed?
Annoyance is temporary. Stories last for a lifetime.
Missing the point entirely.
There’s an extremely simple solution to every greviance and annoyance you find with a game. For everything “fixed” in this simple manner, there’ll be a new one.
Friendly Fire has been a hot topic quite frequently iver the years, and even with that being missing at the moment, there are now multiple people exclaiming oh how annoying it was with player collision in older games and how it’s good that it’s gone. Both of these two are team mate related, next point where team mates can be annoying, and certainly have been, are when they run infront of you blocking your view and/or blocking your well placed shots. No?
That has zero things to do with “safety” (nerfs and safety googles) and everything to do with people jumping into team based playlists solo or not with a full party, while utterly despising every single random team mate from the start, because they exist as an entity on the map.
I fairly certain we’d see the exact same results with the exact same reasonings to keep it as is, if i343 would actually do what I suggested.
How it always have been annoying with sight and shot blocking team mates, and how it’s so great now that it’s gone.
I think we can definitely agree that community is mixed on this.
You’re right it shouldn’t have ever left!!
I agree 1000% not having player collision makes this game not feel like Halo to me. I know that may sound weird, but it honestly does. Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing since CE days, I don’t know, but I absolutely hate how it’s not in.
100% Agree I can’t see why anyone would think removing Player Collision was a good idea? I don’t know if they are just staying it’s “split” because they don’t want to change it or what but 99% of comments / videos I’ve seen have been asking for it to be turned on!
Imagine Infection mode now? Everyone can just stand in the same spot.
As I’m sure being unkillable or having god mode be a plus.
I’m tired of having bad team mates. Doesn’t mean I’m only ever going to play with a full squad or that there is something wrong with matchmaking. Equally this applies to colision or friendly fire. The odd betrayal or bump, is irrelevant to the grander impact here. The dumbing down of the game.
Frustrating things happen, when playing the game. That doesn’t mean its bad? I rarely if ever, bump into other people. Have you considered its your own fault and you need to improve? The game shouldn’t be doing it for you.
I never mentioned head jumps, It is simply dumbing down the gameplay. General gameplay won’t improve, now both teams can spam grenades carelessly and thoughtlessly and people who shouldn’t be able to run away? Now can.
Making the game easier in the wrong ways is not improvement.
I want the game not to be dumbed down, yet I’m the inept one? Hilarious
You mean the small random selection of surveyed users? 1. Not a majority and 2. Randomly selected.
All I see is people who don’t want Player Collision back are people who blame things other than themselves for their deaths.
If you want a game with zero frustration or thought put into team movement or use of explosives - really any quick thinking; just go play passive minecraft.
Halo shouldn’t be like that.
I mean I guess technically it’s split seeing as how 80/20 is considered split, but it’s pretty clear the majority of people are in favor of player collision being added back in. And not even just on here, disagreeing with their take on player collision is the most liked comment on their Twitter post about the changes. And it’s frequently among the top upvoted comments on Reddit regarding the changes as well.
I get that alone, neither Twitter, Reddit, or these forums are representative of the whole. But when the majority of users on all 3 of these platforms (at least those voicing their opinions) are in favor of it, it seems a little disingenuous to simply call it “split”.
how is it a players fault when they spawn infront of an ally and instantly die the moment they spawn, or that a troll blocks their path because hey they can do that?
Sorry but bonuses of no collision out way the losses.
I once carried the flag on Beaver Creak all the way from red base across the middle of the map to blue base while standing on my team mates head. They weren’t the best opposition.
It’s a sad day for comedy values!
I too want player collision back and friendly fire, but I’m 99% sure this was chosen because Halo is going Free to play multiplayer, and they are predicting a high influx of negatively charged players on launch.
I hate to say it, but Halo’s price point was a big barrier to entry for people who do not like Halo, the Halo community, or the idea that a game other than the one they play even exists. This is childish, but its also true.
With Infinite going FTP there will be a massive surge in people doing everything they can to disrupt, disorganise or cause distress amongst The Halo community and people genuinely trying to have a good time or begin their own Halo experience. So I feel that Friendly Fire / Collision should be turned off FOR NOW on launch until the population stabilizes. I will say again though, I do want these features back. Because player movement is Really difficult to predict and understand if people can phase through other people, and also causes its own myriad of problems.
Not only is spawnkilling a seperate issue but trolls are incredibly rare. These aren’t real issues by comparison to nade and rocket spam
How does spawning near an ally and then dying have anything to do with player collision?
Troll? Report, play the match, don’t match with it again.
Keep encountering trolls all the time? Party up with anyone willing to party up, play in party untill you’re out of whatever MMR pit you ended up in to only match with trolls.
Or do you reckon we should start advocating what I suggested earlier on making team mates ghosts?
