There’s been a lot of posts asking for these mechanics to be added back and I think people have not thought this through:
To start fall dmg how am I going to use the grapple hook and the repulsor freely if I have to worry about falling to my death it makes no sense.
On many of the maps like recharge for example there are a lot of small doorways how am I supposed to get into a building while my teammates is trying to get out of that same doorway? There is legit no way around it. Along with other annoyances player collision brings
I also wanted to add in no Friendly fire as well I also agree with having it in comp only. You are less likely to get griefed if there is a personal cost to the grifer potentially deranking vs in social.
-That’s really all I have to say please think some of these points through before going on a tirade about how 343 is ruining halo and how the glory days of H3 are behind us.
I think it mostly boils down to each persons personal preference. I completely agree with friendly fire being disabled as it would limit the amount of greifers/team killers you would encounter.
Fall damage has always been very inconsistent throughout the games so I personally dont really care if it’s in or not.
Player collision on the other hand I think still needs to be in the game. One example for me personally was throughout the flight I dont know how many teammates I had run through me as I was shooting someone or I went to throw a grenade, only for my teammate to run through me and block what would have possibly been a kill. It just screws with a consistency with the gameplay for me and I think many others and I’d much prefer have collision on rather than off.
Yeah about player collision that is an issue but frankly I trust 343 on that decision they’ve shown that they really understand how the mechanics of halo work and what fans want. I think If collision is off there is a good reason for it tbh.
The thing is falling damage (the falling from a great height and hitting the ground version) has only been in two Halo games, CE and Reach, all the others had Fall Timers or fall velocity, where they calculate how long you have fallen then you hit the death mark.
Fall DAMAGE. Not a kill barrier. It should be risk vs reward. If you fail to nail your grapple, there should be a penalty of some sort. Either you take some % of damage or there’s a height impact brace animation that immobilizes you temporarily.
For me in comes down to realism. Spartans can’t phase through things, so it shouldn’t happen in MP. Same with friendly fire, and I actually think it adds a skill gap on knowing how to avoid hurting your teammates. It keep players from just firing into a crowd of friendlies just to kill an enemy. In other words, it was a natural nerf to explosive power weapons.
I agree that 343 needs to prevent griefers, but they need to just copy what COD does. COD causes friendly damage to eventually reflect onto the griefer causing them to kill themself. 343 can even go an extra step and force a boot if they do it more than once.
I could care less about fall damage. Spartans have been falling from orbit since 2, 50m drop isn’t gonna kill them.
If new mechanics introduced to a game change the fundemental core of the game (ie fall damage andplayer collision) then you really should rethink those introductions to the game…
I’m not saying I dislike the grappleshot mechanic
What I am saying is that for the past 6 years on waypoint we have heard horrible…asine lore based reasons why things like sprint should remain in halo
“You’re a 2,000 lbs super soilder you should be able to sprint”
…yeah…and as a 2,000lbs supersoilder whoever you run into (including team mates) is going to have a really bad day…
I don’t want to hear any lore based sprint should stay in the game arguments ever again if people are actually saying player collision and fall damage shouldn’t exist
I just don’t see player collision being possible with how narrow some of passageways and doorways are now in many of the infinite halo maps vs prior games you’d end up body blocking a lot more than before. I think there is s legitimate reason for the decision.
why do people want fall damage? it hasn’t been around since 2004. It’s not new.
I’m against no collision because people running through me screws up my shots, and also it’s unnatural. This isn’t a simulation like Arena, it’s supposed to be actual fighters. I’m against no friendly fire because it’s unfair - a person can be sniping through a teammate who is running at you and the teammate is fine but they can hit you even though you can’t see them. Also, a bunch of their teammates can just run in on you and someone else can spam grenades and not hurt them at all, only you.
Thing is halo has always had fall damage, but not direct fall damage. Spartans can survive really high falls. but on several maps you can jump down and die from impact or even on the way down. This is in every game except I think 4 and 5?
Personally, I can go either way with fall damage, but friendly fire is a must as it stops quite a bit of grenade spamming and makes players be more careful with rockets etc around teammates. Yes you get griefers and trolls but that’s a minority and the majority shouldn’t be punished because of those. Simply just had a kick button like before. 2 betrayals and you can kick. Too many kicks in a short period and a temp ban can be put in place. Player collision is also a must. It allows for a lot of team cooperation and means you can’t just faze through a teammate when being fired upon to save yourself, imagine being the shooter in that situation. Yes it gets a little annoying when bumping, but it also adds a bit of fun and more coordination.
I wouldn’t call fall damage a fundamental core of Halo, its only been in 2 of the 6 mainline games.
I agree that Lore shouldn’t be used to make gameplay decisions, but I do think it’s a valid idea to try and emulate the general ‘feel’ of what it would be like to be a Spartan, and while I don’t necessarily agree I can see how sprinting would fit in with that.
As for player collision, I don’t care too much either way, but in general I’m fine with its removal for matchmaking. You would get fun moments every now and then, but far more often it was annoying and another avenue for griefing. Hope it can be turned on in customs though.
