Once the armor is broken, it doesn’t regenerate (except in the case of a Watcher assisting a Soldier, then it’s armor can come back). The regenerating shield is a staple of Halo gameplay, and has been in every game (even ODST had a “stamina” meter, which essentially was a regenerating shield). Because of this, I don’t think playable Soldiers would fit well into what we have come to expect from player characters in Halo.

> Personally, I see no reason to include Soldiers as playable. Unlike Elites, they express no redeeming qualities and are far removed from the characteristics of the traditional “protagonist”. We didn’t get to play as Elites in multiplayer until the story expanded on their background and made them less antagonist and more deuteragonist. Soldiers haven’t had such treatment. They are purely enemies. With multiplayer now considered canon to Halo lore by 343i, it wouldn’t make sense to include Soldiers as playable for Wargames.
Except they already heal because of the watchers, they just need to implement that on a timer for the soldiers, like Spartans rather than an ability used by Watchers, more complex than Elites, but not by much. We already know soldiers are AI’s, which means there won’t be a backstory for them other than how they were made, aside from maybe something involving Cortana’s revolution or a rogue soldier. Restricting the multiplayer to story only is what caused the mess with the Elites in the first place. Wanting to wait for a backstory to have a playable character that could potentially help diversify both customization and multiplayer, all of which can easily be kept in balance due to similarities with basic human form, is a little ridiculous.
As for making canon, as much as I don’t like canon interfering with multiplayer, Spartans need to be trained to fight all forms of enemies, not just other Spartan, just like how I’d expect an soldier of modern day to have the skills in various forms of enemy tactics and combat. Soldiers and Elites fight differently and look differently than Spartans and I would expect the UNSC to train for both large and small scale encounters. What if Cortana did create a section of Soldiers that can self regenerate? All the writers have to do is say they exist and they exist, plus it sounds like a good idea to me to give Spartans some practice for a potential scenario while letting them learn to fight Prometheans, and what better way to have them train then using the most elite soldier you have to take there place if the should so choose.
I can work just fine they just have to work at it, just like Elites will require some extra work, and at worst, some people won’t use them, but others will, and I see no harm in that.
