So despite everyone’s thoughts on playable elites in the new series, I don’t think this would fit. The elites were originally the main enemy of Halo (CE, 2, Reach, etc.) so I was thinking how nice would it be to be able to play as the Prometheans or better yet just forerunner rates in general. They wouldn’t have any special abilities over regular Spartans but I think it’d be a cool idea. We always play as Spartans now so it would be an interesting change of pace for the game.
Looking at the main rates I managed to get the following (in order highest to lowest):
Builder - Responsible for the design and construction of most Forerunner technology and architecture, including their weapons, ships and megastructures.
Miner - Responsible for obtaining the materials required for the work of the Builders, as well as stellar and planetary engineering.
Lifeworker - Specialising in biology and medicine, and the experimentation of various forms of life.
Juridical - Charged with judicial matters, including the investigation of crimes and the judgment of criminals within Forerunner society.
Warrior-Servants - Second-lowest rate and primary military caste in Forerunner society.
The last is not important. It’s engineers by the way…
If these classes of Forerunners maintained the teleportation abilities of the Soldier, matches would drag on for longer than normal. It would be more annoying than fun.
Spartans and Elites are, for a start, physical equals. Also the Elites were only the main bad guys in CE and Reach. In 2 they changed sides, in 3 they were on our side, and in ODST they were absent.
A single Forerunner would wipe the floor with a large team of Spartans. The Didact crushed Chief over and over, without even having to touch him. And even then, he was toying with Chief, he wasn’t even trying to fight him. It’s entirely because of Cortana’s interference the Didact lost at all. Even the lowest of Forerunner castes would dominate the Spartans. Plus, Prometheans and Builders are like three metres tall.
And the reason we had playable Elites is because in the story, we played as an Elite and the Elites were now on the side of the UNSC, meaning that they would be fighting with each other and training with each other. Until we play as a Forerunner fighting with the humans I wouldn’t expect to play as one any time soon.

Please read the whole thing first. Although it took me effort to find that quote…

I see your point but it’s just a random idea I was thinking about late at night. This wasn’t exactly meant to be taken seriously. It’s more of an idea than asking for implementation.
But that last part would also define the reason as to why we don’t have playable elites either

Anvil Station actually experimented having both Spartans and Elites train together in the War Games simulator. They are still our allies afterall. Image of both in simulation on Anvil Station. This idea is also in a 343 Canon Fodder. I’d also personally prioritize Sangheili in MP since it’s a previously established feature, plus the Elites were physically similar to Spartans, making their similarity in gameplay more plausible.
I like the idea of playable Forerunners, but I’m unsure about it at the same time since it hasn’t been previously implemented.

Can see why. If done incorrectly it wouldn’t make for a great gameplay decision

I just can’t agree with that. Elites always did fit, it’s just that they weren’t really balanced for mixing them with Spartans in slayer like in Halo 2 and 3.
If Elites return as playable characters, they need to be either in their own playlist, something like invasion or custom games.
That said, I like the rest of your post. I love the idea of playing as a Forerunner, in fact, in a thread I replied to a few days ago I echoed that sentiment.
Here is an excerpt from that thread:
Since Halo 4, I have wanted a Halo game where you play as the Forerunners, either fighting against ancient Humanity or the Flood, or both!

Well, considering that OP said they’d be equal, if the teleport worked the same as a thruster with a different animation, I think it’d be okay.
I’d say just have all 3. Why not.

Sorry, poor choice of words. I really mean that in the current layout of the campaign we don’t side with the covenant at all. We are always fighting them or the Prometheans or both. So it wouldn’t really work story-wise, neither would forerunner but again, who said video games needed to make sense? I just thought this would be a nice idea

True, but we have Swords of Sanghelios on our side!
But if you look at my last post again, I really do like the idea of playing as a Forerunner! One day I hope!
The farthest I’d go is playable Prometheans. However, a new enemy type similar to Spartans and Elites would have to be made. They’d also need to have personality and not just be killer robots. I’d make each one an AI created by Cortana and put inside a robot/Promethean. Assuming the Spartan abilities stay, they’d phase a few meters as a thrust (like the Phaeton does). I don’t really have a name for them though…
Honestly, when I first saw the Promethean Soldiers, I believed that we would be able to play as them in multiplayer. They’re the same size as Spartans, and seem to be made to look like humans to be able to use their technology, so why not? Different versions of solders have different heads, arms, legs, etc. It seems like the logical thing to do. And, unlike Elites, there wouldn’t be problems with hitboxes.

They made such a big deal out of just one Forerunner coming back that I can’t ever see them treating Forerunners as canon fodder to be killed by Spartans. So I think its more likely that we will see robots. Plus it doesn’t seem to be the current direction of the series. The Didact seems to have been the only Forerunner not on board with humans claiming the Mantle and those outside the galaxy abandoned their technology to die off quietly. So if the Didact does come back he will be a composed essence; ie a Promethean.
If you’re not playing as Spartans then the multiplayer would have to sacrifice balance and probably have different mechanics to the core Halo game.
You would have to give something to counter balance the teleporting ability.
This sounds more like a class based system and whilst I am not opposed to that; its not really a hall mark of the Halo series.
I personally think they should do a completely different battlefield/battlefront esque game with 64 player stuff, let you play as almost anything (think of Hunters/knights a bit like sentry kits from battlefield) and have huge cinematic vehicle based maps to fight it on; whilst having larger objective based machines on rails like Scarabs or Krakens.
So you could have:
Prometheans
Covenant/Banished
UNSC (marines mostly with Spartans as sentry pick ups)

What, and have Jen Taylor voice all of the soldiers? Seems an easy way to give them personality; just make them all Cortana.
That’d be pretty cool, maybe we could teleport like the soldiers do too

lol that’d be funny but no, they’d each be individual AIs. They’re created by Cortana, not a clone of Cortana.

You know she could actually do that? Its what the Warden does and she can split her consciousness down into smaller units. Which presumably would be a lot smarter and better than a normal soldier ancilla.
How would you distinguish them from the normal soldier ancilla she has? She can’t make anything more complex (Composer makes Knights) and seems to want her normal “Created” to be immortal in the Domain with her. I can’t see her housing them in normal soldiers and being used as cannon fodder even if she scanned more humans to make more AI. Unless the AI can control multiple entities which just loops us back the question of why Cortana can’t do that herself!

I know in first strike, she copied herself multiple times, however the more times she copied herself, the more flaws were in the copies. She also did this in halo 4, but she appeared to struggle and be in a lot of pain to do this. Plus, we don’t even know what Cortana really is anymore, as she has a physical body. I think at this point, Cortana doesn’t need humans to make AIs, as she has access to the Domain.
How would you distinguish them? Well for starters, they’d be able to think independently. Soldiers, from what I know, do whatever they’re told and have no personality. These new Prometheans would be leaders of their squads. If you think about it, the crawlers are like the grunts, the soldiers are/can be somewhat like the Jackals, and the Knights are like the hunters. This new Promethean would fill the role of the elites, and would be forced to think independently to successfully lead their squad. To prevent them from having an unlimited life that could overthrow Cortana, they’d be linked to the robot body they’re given. If the robot dies, so does the AI.

That would be interesting… It would be cool if someone made a fan game like that, imagine picking up an ODST powerup
