I have been having a few connection issues to Halo 5: Guardians servers and I become really annoyed because I can’t find any reason as to why my connection is having issues. This problem can be solved by adding a Ping counter or Latency measure on the game’s scoreboard, so people can find reason to why they are getting server lag and/or why other team members drop from the game (a lot of people get angry because of it). Having some proof of server issues can make players like myself calm down easily and no throw their controllers around. So 343 Industries, if you are reading this: Please add a Ping counter/Latency measure to the multiplayer scoreboards! I can’t stress enough about it and it would be nice to be shown proof of near disconnection and laggy rubberbanding.
If anyone else agrees, continue this discussion below and we can share each others’ woes over the matter.
High ping/latency doesn’t necessarily mean that the servers are acting up; it would only suggest that it’s taking a long time for information to travel between a player’s console and Halo 5’s servers. You can use some online tools from your PC to check general latency and latency with Microsoft Azure servers (likely where Halo 5 servers are), which may reveal some information; I have yet to hear about a tool that let’s you check latency directly from consoles, though. Ping & Packet loss (measure here, and note that you’ll need to update Flash Player and Java, and don’t use Chrome) Latency with Microsoft Azure servers (probably where the Halo 5 servers are; you can check here, and you can also test up/down speeds to the Azure servers if you want)
The sucky thing about latency is that it is not always changeable. If you live geographically far from Halo 5 servers, your ping may always be high. And when you get matched with people who have smaller ping, you’re gonna see lag. There really isn’t anything to be done about that, except moving closer Halo 5 servers or getting more people in your local area playing the game; but both of those things aren’t easily done.
