Phil Spencer Interview with GS

“That’s one thing we learned from Halo 4. We had real good success with Halo 4, but we didn’t retain as many of the customers, of the players as we wanted to. We wanted the players, the gamers, to stay with the game. The team’s really taken a big focus on how we build out multiplayer engagements; it’s why you see things like Warzone, Arena’s obviously always going to be critical to what Halo’s about, and even the co-op single-player campaigns allowing you and I to go play together and kind of play at multiple difficulty levels. Now that so many of them (shooters) are kind of service-based and not just shooters, I do think it raises the bar on what you do in terms of stickiness.”

Phil knows. Seriously, this guy is one of the greatest Xbox bosses that the company has ever had.

Praise Phil!

He has certainly turned things around at Xbox since he took the helm.

Yeah I could see a huge difference if Mattrick was still there

Ok, thanks. For some reason it didn’t click GS was Gamespot.

True Phil, but Halo 4 tried to change the formula without any true innovation. It was essentially CoD wrapped up in a Halo box. Things like perks/mods, armor abilities and loadouts, personal ordnances/killstreaks, emphasis on casual players, non-existent ranking system, DLC fustercluck, cant pick up enemy grenades, and the ordnance system muting weapon spawns on map was probably the biggest atrocity Halo 4 inflicted. These things don’t belong in Halo. I’m at peace with some exterior inspirations such as ADS and sprint, but man Halo 4’s mp was the worst of the franchise.

And that includes Halo Wars.

Meh I preferred Halo 4s MP over Reachs. Armorlock was to common in MP in reach and was beyond frustrating.

Personally, I’d take armorlock any day of the week since it still had people spawn with a AR and pistol over dealing with people spawning with a mini shotgun, plasma grenades and hardlight shield (which I hate even more than Armor lock because not only is it impervious to most weapons, the player can move with it.)

The hardlight shield wasn’t bad at all. You could move with it, but it didn’t give you invulnerability, you could still be shot from behind, you were really slow and it could only save you if there were objects around you where you could hide. The same thing can be done with evade though (getting behind cover).
It barely held long enough for your shields to recharge, and if you have the ammo, you could still shoot it down. It’s not like hardlight shield saved thousands of bad players because of how good it was… It didn’t save them more than most other AA’s.
Last but not least, HL Shield doesn’t save you from a well placed grenade.

Actually on large maps like Ragnarok, nothing was more frustrating than finally being able to get close to killing a sniper on the pelican just for them to use HLS at the last second, again and again and again.

AL simply delays the inevitable because your shield doesn’t charge while using it. Not to mention, the large update 343i made nerfed the crap out of AL.

Hardlight was easy to get around, throw a frag behind them and they are toast. Even with the fix to AL it was still beyond frustrating compared to the AA’s in Halo 4. Plus Al allowed you to go into bubble mode until team mates arrived no so much with hardlight shield. I’d rather deal with Halo 4s short coming s than Reachs AL.

Okay lets ignore the armor abilities. In Reach, weapons still spawn like they should, there are loadouts but they are static loadouts meaning you cant edit them, everyone spawns with frags and atleast a pistol. The choice of primary ranging generally between the AR, DMR and needle rifle. This is nothing compared to the issue with 4 where everyone can spawn with plasma pistols and plasma grenades ruining the vehicle balance.
Or people spawning with the mini shotgun and corner camp in dominion or KotH.
And lets not even get started why Flood mode ruined community infection gametypes or how if you pick up the flag you cant drop it until you die.
And Firefight was loads better than Spartan Ops.

All hail Lord Phil o/

Every time I see Spencer in an interview I can tell he cares about gamers. Praise the Lord.

I love Phil. I get the feeling that behind the PR, he’s actually a good person who wants good for his customers, and truly tries to be as honest and transparent as possible.
He doesn’t even shoot down the competitors because he’s classier than that.

Well, if he gets close to dying in that situation, then he might not be a very good sniper. Or he wasn’t paying attention to you because he was shooting enemies on the other side, which is really frustrating for the person in that position. Don’t they deserve some way to deffend themselves, especially if they are in the middle of the battlefield? And evade can also save you as much as the HL Shield, though it does give a split second more to get killed. There are also ways to get close enough to a sniper where he/she loses the distance advantage, and the HLS loses significance.

AL had enough other things which made it annoying. The EMP was annoying as hell (though I could respect a player who could put it to good use, it wasn’t like any noob could go EMP-punching people), you could destroy vehicles, and it held you alive long enough for your team to save you.

I disagree with a good amount of these statements but the bolded one in particular kills me every time someone says it. As someone who has played a lot of CoD and Halo over the years, Halo 4 was not anything like CoD.

I will however give you the lack of weapon spawns does change the dynamic of game as it moved away from map control and I can see where some people would view that as a detraction and rank Halo 4’s mp lower than other Halo’s.

I worship this man.
