People complain Infinite has "No Customization" - So I did the MATH

Shame that they downgraded from Halo 4’s full on Mix & Match style to the more simplified Halo 5 Guardians style.

I do unfortunately have no information about how many Helmets, Armors and Visors that did exist in Halo 5 at launch. However, a large portion of the items got added post launch in 11 different updates. The first 10 updates got released within 14 months of the release of the game and the final nearly 2 years after the release of the game itself.

Was it really just over a year and a bit? I remember that lasting so much longer.

What I truly wish to see for customization as far as spartans go is…

Helmet
Multiple Attachments for the helmet selectable at the same time (basically a slot for each ear, forehead and chin/mouth)
Visor
Chest Plate
Back Plate
Arms
Each shoulder
Hands
Leg Armor
Knees
Feet

This is what I was hoping for by now, but instead of moving forward from Halo 4, 343i has only regressed. Having Reach levels of spartan customization is sad when that game is over 10 years old. Yes it’s reach levels plus more, but that more is so insubstantial at least to me.
Colors have been restricted and monetized and guns have been given customization in a game where in past titles they were designed with specific profiles and colors to make them recognizable from a distance to give you tactical information. Now that too is gone for the sake of money.

Here is a list with the major updates for Halo 5.

  1. Oct 27 2015 | Release

I can’t change my colors. Therefore no.

At launch, Halo 5 had 72 geometrically distinct Helmets/Armors. If we include the variants, the game had 175 Helmets/Armors and 53 Visor Colors at launch. At the current state of the game, there exist 102 geometrically distinct Helmets, 91 geometrically distinct Armors, 240 Helmets if variants are included, 229 Armors if variants are included and 63 Visor Colors.

This right here.

It’s not about the number of customisation items. It never has been. It’s about how you get to unlock the items and what they look like. Take Halo 3 for example. People who earned Hayabusa looked good and were good at the game. Those few that unlocked Recon as a reward did something super special.

In Halo Infinite, nothing stands out as something that was a great achievement. You either spent money on a promotion or you simply bought it in the store. No one is arguing that there aren’t enough items, people are arguing that the items are not worth it and devalue the customisation mechanic.

As someone who wore Hayabusa the part were good at the game is false a lot of us Hayabusa users were just alright not too good or too bad although it did attract a lot of newbies to the point where the armor was called noob armor

In what universe was Reach’s customisation mechanic worse than Infinites?

Reach has complete freedom for armour combinations and doesn’t charge $5 for blue.

Infinite restricts the customisation to certain cores, chrages $5 for blue and 3 other versions of the sme colour, doesn’t contain 50% of the armour modules that are given to the AI and are in the damn steam banner, doesn’t allow you to use individual armour items from a set you unlock, and has a larger focus on selling stupid holographic mohawks and cat ears than actually giving the people what they asked for.

It is in no way structured better than Reach and in no way has the same freedom of customisation. Stop defending this garbage system.

So, almost all of Halo 5 post release content came in a little over a year? Which only gets you into the start of Season 3 for Halo Infinite. :grimacing:

The customization mechanics specifically? This one.

Acquisition is the issue.

To understand this, it’s important to separate the system into two categories:

  1. Customization Mechanics
  2. Customization Acquisition

The acquisition is really the problem, but the mechanics including customization slots and options are actually far more in depth than Reach’s system even when you compare emblem/color choices.

In a way, so does Reach. Spartans and Elites.

Core restriction hype is really only exacerbated and drummed up by the fact that cosmetic acquisition is hindered by microtransactions. If you had all the cosmetics unlocked for free on each of the cores do you really think that core cosmetic restriction would be as big of a deal?

This can be chalked up to cosmetic acquisition, which really is the biggest issue plaguing the general cosmetic system.

Which cosmetics aren’t available that were available to AI/in the Steam banner?

To my knowledge nearly every cosmetic piece (with an exception of Agryna’s player model) in game is obtainable in some fashion, and have been available at some point after the initial reveal that AI had access to “unobtainable” armor pieces. Unless you have an example of such, which I’d be happy to take a look at.

Also, every one of the Steam/Season 1 banner cosmetics has been available at some point thus far, again unless you have some example that challenges this.

This was a missed opportunity I will admit. Though I can understand why in some circumstances this is the case. I’m on the fence depending on the argument.

What is it that they asked for? They’ve asked for a lot.

The customization mechanics are absolutely structured better than Reach.

  • prosthetic control
  • overall more choices of individual customization modules (30 for Infinite, 20 for Reach)
  • more helmet attachment freedom/crossover
  • more choices within the comparable customization modules
  • ability to add more cosmetics as the game progresses

Again this is the biggest issue, cosmetic acquisition is the biggest hurdle within the larger customization system. It should be addressed further and easier to access.

Not defending.

Praising what’s good, challenging what’s bad.

It’s a pretty reasonable position to hold lol.

I think the problem here is that a lot of “classic” players have defined themselves a particular look. And it’s frustrating if the pieces they used to build on that are not immediately available.

Their wardrobe is bursting at the seams, but they have nothing to wear.

Whereas someone like me, who despite playing a lot of Halo, has never really put a lot of effort into customisation - is having a lot of fun with what’s presented. I’m a blank slate. From my perspective there is heaps of choice.

The second half of my statement is much more important.

yeah! “Millions of customization option on day one” launch. Flat out lie, hard to trust things in the future.

This do only depend ion how you define a customization option. If differences in armor coatings or visor colors was defined as different option, then the number would without any uncertainty exceed 1 million by a significant margin.

Yeah, using it in context with what the Halo experience would feel like moving forward and was a selling point to get players to purchase and invest in the game. The outcome and the way it was showcased did not match in the slightest.

The exact quote is:

The body of customization content that we have on day one ensures that there will be millions of customization combinations for Spartans on the battlefield

Not a lie, in fact mathematically accurate.

Going purely off the rather limited selection of 11 helmets, 8 chests, 8 shoulders (x2), and 30 colors (x3) in Halo 3 you get a a total combination of 152,064,000 total combinations. And that’s excluding clan tag and emblem customization and Spartan gender.

Even with the rather limited selection of cosmetics that were available day one in Infinite (either launch date or beta date), it’s highly probable that a over a million total combinations within the 30 total customization modules was functionally achievable.

The actual quote is absolutely a factual statement.

I would have created palletes like in Warframe, let f2p have basic colors and if you want other palletes with shades and stuff, unlock or buy them.

It doesn’t matter about points of customization if at the end of the battlepass you can only make your REACH armor core look slightly different than it did 20 levels before 100.
MK7 chest attachments are just absolutely ugly too.
Now if I could put Jorges shoulder on MK7?
Emiles chest grenades on MK7?
Hell the knee pads for each core is like, 2 bad looking ones and one good one. Wrist slot? Lol?
Not to mention the thigh slots and glove slots.
Oh. Oh. And all those Stay tuned for more details items?
Just unlock those bro. 343 is keeping those in their back pocket to weaponize FOMO to sell it to us. That’s bunk bro.
This is all subjective but looking at the past games?
Did things not just look better as well?
Like who cares about math/quantity when the quality and user experience is annoying?
