IMO.
I know I’ll get flamed for this, but pelicans and broadswords are overrated vehicles that have no place in the halo multiplayer sandbox. You may think that it may contribute to “a big and epic fight” but really, having played several of these mods in halo custom edition, its not the case.
You have one pilot operating the vehicle, and other teammates can sit in passenger seats/the cockpit. But that’s about it. The pilot is the one that gets to have all the fun, whereas if you sit in the cockpit, you can’t do anything. You just sit there, and you can’t see where the pilot is flying, it’s all closed up.
Sure in halo 4 co-op with the pelican level, you can have another player use the side turrets, but really, a falcon does a better job since its more balanced due to its slower speed, and the pilot needs to have the skill of flying above players/objectives that the gunners can shoot at. With the pelican/broadsword, there’s not the same synergy cause the pilot will fly wherever they desire shooting everything they see, and the side gunners are more of the “clean-up” players.
Maybe 343 will put some in matchmaking for players to be all giddy about them, but I still stand by my point.
Pelicans would be amazing to really drive though!!! Every Halo player has been dying to get their hands on flying one in any version of the game. Halo: Reach’s easter egg doesn’t count because it had faulty controls to it. What if they fixed the kinks to it and made it actually flyable to use. it would be like a flying warthog except the pilot is the one with the gun!
I forget if in Halo 4’s campaign you flew one at the end while your trying to escape the forerunner planet or not, but if you did that doesn’t really count because its like a star wars death star mission your only going one way with the goal of destroying everything in front of you, your not actually “flying it”
In H4 you do fly one, but it is from point to point and you get out to run inside pillars to activate things. So not a real flying experience per se. Laser a few phantoms and whatnot. Nothing crazy or really memorable. I’ve always wanted to fly my team to an enemy base and see them all drop out and start whooping some -Yoink- lawlz
I think it would be quite cool IMO. Maybe not in regular gametypes, but in other gametypes like “maybe” heavies, or maybe a gametype of its own, made for dogfights and rockets and all that stuff.
Honestly, I would take the Falcon over being able to pilot a Pelican, especially in multiplayer. It seems more to-scale with the Banshee and Phaeton in terms of size and firepower, and yet offers a different playstyle from either of them (since the pilot must rely on his/her passengers to man the guns). I feel like the Pelican would be more cumbersome and cramped in the air space.
Regardless of my preference, though, I don’t think we will be flying Pelicans in Warzone. I say this because the REQ points are capped at nine (spawning a Phaeton from a REQ station costs seven). I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t think the Phaeton is comparable to a Pelican.
