PC MCC Split screen Coop Officially canned

Today it was brought to my attention that 343 plans to can split-screen Coop for MCC PC via a reddit post.
https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/sea21e/despite_the_constant_feedback_it_looks_like/

My question for you reader is do you support this decision or not and why?

I personally feel as Coop split-screen has been a staple feature for FPS halo games. Every FPS Halo game I’ve ever played aside from Infinite has it. If it wasn’t for split-screen I may have never got into Halo so many years ago and I know many people are in that same boat.

I personally have wanted PC split-screen since PC MCC launched with Halo: Reach. It’s great for playing with friends & family in person without them needing another console/PC & game installed themselves.

I understand this could possibly not be easy to implement & take awhile to fully do so. I’ve already been waiting over 2 years for some of these titles to get split-screen and I wouldn’t mind waiting longer if it would eventually be implemented.

For aome reason, I tried to post the same link here that I did on Reddit, but got error messages every time! I’m glad other people are bringing it up though.

I’ve used my PC as a main device for multiplayer for years, and I’m just tired of being pushed aside because of it. Let me play the game that I’d like to, if tools are being developed for one system, developing it for another isn’t a huge struggle. It just has to function, it doesn’t have to be godlike.

I’m so sick of it, that I’ve given a few incredible games in my Steam library negative reviews: Both Borderlands and Terraria offer split-screen on nearly every device except on PC.

It’s tiring not being able to play with the people who matters most to me.

Completely unacceptable and embarrassing. Obviously, PC users bought this game expecting to be able to play split screen at some point. Split screen is incredibly easy. Someone could add it to the PC port in minutes, but I guess 343 doesn’t have any real developers on their team so they’ll tell us to mod the game instead. What are we paying them for? Are they employing students? We were told that simple features like split screen would be available years ago… along with HDR. Seriously, anyone could figure this out. The dev team is either being lazy stealing company time or they’re horribly understaffed and don’t want to admit it

Farn popped up and pretty much said “hol’ up this is still on the back burner, chill people, it’s not quite dead yet”

Great catch! Here’s the full quote by 343_farn:

Hi Spartans!

This thread came to my attention late last night and I wanted to take a moment to clarify that split screen support for MCC still does remain under consideration and is sitting in our backlog.

We have not made a final decision to “cut” it from our list of features to support for MCC on PC but it does remain a much lower priority than other features like Custom Game Browser, Mod Tools, and various other Quality of Life improvements for MCC. I will add this to the list to perhaps give a little more detail about in one of our upcoming MCC centric blogs.

I always bring up the Nucleus Coop mod because it’s the only option for PC players right now. I have no idea if it works with the Windows Store version (the same as you get from gamepass). Its biggest shortcoming is that you can’t play matchmaking games with it. I know that is such a big appeal and something that I have used split-screen for too.

In addition to Farn, Agent Golf added an update as well:

Hello Nefnoj,

Apologies for the confusion, but my last message here was inaccurate and did not reflect that Halo Support does not have insight from the development team on this feature. What Halo Support can confirm is that split-screen is not currently supported for PC players of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Please keep an eye out for future Master Chief Collection Development Updates here: News | Halo - Official Site (en) (halowaypoint.com).

Thank you,

Halo Agent Golf

It would likely go unused by most players since I’ve never really heard of PC gamers doing couch coop. Though having that been said, the functionality is already built into the Xbox version. I have to assume it wouldn’t be too hard to get working on PC.

i’ve used nucleus coop. it’s good if you have a beefy pc. otherwise it’s better just to play over network. it’s almost as good as native coop if you get it working right but it’s just too resource intensive. and it doesn’t work on windows store version. only steam. it works good on all, with little to no input delay, though Halo 2 Anniversary does lag when playing it. as an alternative for coop it’s main attractive is that… it exists. We need something for potato pc users like me. i do wish someone mods the game to enable coop (it’s present at least on Halo 1 and 2 If i recall correctly, i think GeneralHeed manage to get classic graphics mcc to work, but didn’t get it to link to an input device.

it wouldn’t the reason gamers don’t do couch coop is because either most games on pc don’t have it or because most games played by said PC gamer are not couch coop friendly. but i wouldn’t be surprised if something as a big as Halo did it, it could change the trend.

You know it hasn’t been dropped, right?

Hey, if it’s something that they plan on adding later that’s no problem. My problem with that is that they MIGHT add it later. Possibly, maybe. That’s the annoying bit. In my opinion, Split-Screen is far more important that all of the custom stuff that they added in seasons. Seasonal stuff was nice, but missing core features such as split-screen is frustrating. At least they’ve added CGB, and perhaps when they are done with that, maybe split-screen can finally be something discussed more on a regular basis, but who can say for sure. Now if they had Steam workshop and there was a mod that someone made that did the job perfectly for 4 players on one PC screen, then this feature really wouldn’t need to be added whatsoever. But Nucleus Coop takes a lot to set up, plus from what I’ve heard, it still has a lot of work before it’s fully complete. Plus the installation sounds kind of sketchy to me. Anyway, I hope that in the future, Split-screen will be discussed on a more often basis, and perhaps will be something that 343 might consider doing.

I’m happy to announce I just found out today that was an official mess up statement and was incorrect. It seems they left an update a day later stating they are indeed still planning PC split screen but it is low on the priority list.

Splitscreen needs to happen.

Hopefully it is added in at some point down the line. Additionally hopefully they add in crossplay campaign co-op. I’d like to be able to co-op with my friends who are still on Xbox again.

Maybe after they finish adding workshop, and the rest of the content to CGB, we might see something about it perhaps?

Ya I would have to guess it would be after we get more-full CGB support, mod support, Steam Workshop support, hopefully finished File Share & Theaters, Flood Fire Fight for ODST & Reach then we might see it around then.

Consoles have finally reached a level where they can really play along side a pc in multiplayer situations.
None of my friends have ever liked the idea of a pc and always been console and i will play but a m/kb will always rule over a controller in certain games. BREAK THE MOULD ALREADY! you have the Microsoft name how about some compatibility mofos.

That is low, like Lekgolo level low.

It’s a shame 343 are canning split screen coop on PC, it would have been great, it feels like ever since Infinite released, 343 just wanna end the MCC support as quickly as possible and canning features like this is making it easier for them…

I had a feeling this was never going to happen the second the devs went from talking about it being added post launch before it even came out on PC, then going quiet on the feature for months. What ticks me off is that they threw it back on the backlog to give us some hope, then snatch it away. A perfect tactic to lose fans. 343 surely are some incompetent devs, especially on PC.

I was so excited to experience these classic halo games with my wife in couch co-op, which she had never played, but now that hope is gone unless I break out the old Xbox 360. I’m not buying another console, and I’m certainly not buying 2 copies of MCC just to play through the campaigns probably once with her.
