Palmer defence ACTIVATE!!

Okay I am here to defend my favorite new character to the Halo Franchise Commander Sara Palmer.

Being a son of a Military vet I kinda know how things go in the military so try and bear with me when I say being in the military requires certain traits when you get up in the ranks.

Commander Sara Palmer is a bit of a bully but who here has been to boot camp? Who here has been around a drill sergeant? It isn’t fun but there are a few things you gotta know about these tough guys, they give a damn.

Palmer is no different, while she is a soldier and she tends to call these science types “eggheads” I don’t see any hate for them. A lack of respect for sure but obviously it’s her insecurity as science is not her forte. You need to realize that being in a command role means usually putting up a front when it comes to addressing a group, and being a bit more down to earth when dealing with someone one on one.

Take Hoya for example, he got wounded, you can see her concern. DelMarco on the other hand, he made an excuse and she scolded him, and then directly reminded him that Leaders need to lead and not complain when other don’t follow.

As for the “eggheads” I don’t see this as too terribly bad, in fact in the military slurs tend to go around. Navy refering to marines as Jarheads etc. if you’ll notice to the face of a scientist she refers to them as “doc”.

So as players we aren’t exactly soldiers, we don’t really get that type of mentality in anyone except for perhaps school yard bullies from the 80’s. So when we hear it from her while we are spartans it doesn’t translate.

Anyways I digress, this thread obviously isn’t a big deal but I thought I’d try and clear a few things up. Yes Palmer can be a ***** but it’s just part of her job heh.

Anyways… Loving the Palmer and I look forward to every snide, rude thing she has to say in the episodes to come!

Why does Palmer need to be defended, exactly?

She’s exactly what I’ve come to expect after my decade of service in the military.

Here Here, Palmer is an awesome character. She can be a hard–Yoink-, but as you said, she gives a damn!

The only reason I don’t really care about her is because throughout the whole game she never actually DOES anything. She barely talks really and there is 0 action from her.

Other then that not bad. She is strong. Attractive. Wearing power armor. Seems to have a great career.

Is there even people bashing her right now? Anyway I like every character brought into Halo 4. Too bad Halo isn’t some FPS/RPG hybrid kind of game as 343i would have had more space to develop them.

But hey with some luck and 117 has a lot of it they will all be back with a more important role in Halo 5 yes please?

Some people feel that the Spartan IV banter is unprofessional, and that the seemingly belittling chatter reflects badly on Palmer specifically. Of course, those people don’t understand what it’s actually like in the military, and how normal this kind of thing is.

How hard is it to say science team once in a while, she doesn’t have to say egghead every second why does she wear spartan armor if she never does anything?

nuff said.

You said it right there.
I really don’t know what most of these people are going on about her not being a good commander, or not caring, or being disrespectful.

Compared to most of the real life officers that I can recall serving under she actually seems pretty laid back, and that tendency she has for teasing banter makes her seem a lot more friendly and approachable than a lot of officers I recall.

Wouldn’t bother me at all to follow her in a fight, or to go into a fight because she pointed at it, because she just has that ‘feeling’ of being competant.

Why would she say science team when she could say egghead and let them know that she cares about them.
As far as her not doing anything, she’s got a job there even if it isn’t apparent right off the bat.
Let the Captain call general quarters and then see who the armed officer that takes position at his side is.

When was the last time you saw a 4 star general pick up a gun and fight? Also it’s Episode 2. And as Hacksaw showed there is room for NPC’s so I’m willing to bet Palmer puts her boots ont he ground at some point too.

As a side note is anyone else hoping she fills the “Arbiter” roll in Halo 5, 2nd player as Palmer? I am, I can imagine her and Chief would make a decent one sided banter team. Not to replace Cortana but maybe if the lil blue is still alive Palmer will serve as a fill in until she reserfaces. “I’ve been gone 5 minutes and you get yourself a new girl?!”

1.) Because saying the proper name is right if you say things like Covie and egghead you sound dumb and lazy.

2.) I didn’t say she did nothing but all she seems to do in game is say what you have to do, something miller could do just as easily at least he’s more helpful.

Shes a video game character… who cares.

> Shes a video game character… who cares.

Obviously nobody incapable of immersion!

palmers fine but doesn’t say anything interesting imo, del rio is the worst character in the game, chief should have falcon punched him then followed up with a mjolnir mk 6 helmet headbutt.

The more I read on these threads complaining about what they are seeing in the spartan ops episodes the more mindboggling it is for me to realize that most of the people making the derogatory comments really don’t have a clue about how things work in the military life or on board a combat vessal in hostile territory.

Just to clear up a few misunderstandings:

>When a CO approaches you in a friendly smiling mannor 9 times out of 10 your a dead man walking, you really screwed up something and you are going to hear about it in a harsh fashion.

>Special operation group commanders don’t get picked randomly out of a hat, they get that post because they are proven leaders under fire and in peacetime.

>Battalion commanders do not go on field operations, and the soldiers that do go on those ops don’t Want a battlion commander around during them. Commanders tell them Which door to kick in, thats strategy, the field teams decide How to kick that door in, thats tactics. Having the commander on sight just makes it impossible to lie on the mission reports.

>When an officer insults you or your work in a bantering way and then walks off without taking any action 90% of the time thats as close as your getting to an atta’boy. The best compliment I got from a major from the marine corp once was “I see what your doing and I have nothing to complain about.”

>Any sort of special ops team, which the Spartan IV’s qualify as, might put a very straight public face in the city, and they are the most professional people in the field, but back at the barracks are some of the most high strung jokers around and constantly looking for ways to get into trouble for the entertainment value.

>If Palmer didn’t care about her people in the field then she wouldn’t be in the hanger checking on returning teams. She’d let someone hand her a clipboard at the end of the day that had the names on it of who did and didn’t make it back. From the number of beds I saw in the clips there is roughly a battlion of Spartans on that ship, but she knew the name of the guy that came back wounded?

I don’t hate her, it’s just that she doesn’t… y’know… DO anything (like others said)

She’s the leader of the Spartan IV’s and struts around in Spartan Armor, but she gets zero action time, and is instead onboard the Infinity the entire game, and never actually fighting alongside her fellow Spartans

Once again she’s a commander. Also like I said before NPC’s are possible, she may very well get her feet on the ground. If you recall fromt he campaign (Spoilers) she is out of the infinity and it is assumed she fought even though you don’t see it.

I like Palmer and the Spartan IVs. Most of them were Marines/ODSTs and we’ve all heard the kind of banter they have. Palmer reminds me of a toned-down Johnson (which isn’t a bad thing at all, just a different character).
