Overshield and Active Camo Pickup

So there’s been a lot of concern over how frustrating it would be to be in the middle of a firefight with somebody when they all of a sudden pull an overshield out you had no idea they had and just end the fight. Well, that would be frustrating, but what if you could see that they have it? What if it were equipped on their armor somewhere and you could make an informed decision about whether or not you want to fight them? Maybe y’all are already implementing that mechanic, but if not, I think this would be a good idea. It would add a new level of strategic planning for players when they realize they need to be more powerful to be able to fight them

EDIT: This has been answered! I didn’t know there was information on this already pieced together from the footage, but it turns out that not only can you see the powerup on their armor, but there is a light trail coming off of it, and the activation time has been increased from 1.02 seconds to 1.34. This video explains it, at 1:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=f9D9HKX0t10

I kind of hope there’s a slow burn to its activation as it powers up. That way it’s actually not all that useful if you activate it in the middle of a fight. It would stink to get the jump on someone only for them to turn around, activate it, and then kill you. It’s one thing if you activate it before engagement and another to activate during the middle of a fight. I do like your idea of visibly seeing the equipment attached to a Spartan though. That’s a great idea.

If you look closely on some of the footage you can see a small trail of light glowing off of the player who was carrying the overshield in their pocket.

It could be made where it takes time to grant the overshield. Then any damage taken stops it’s progress.

For example, you dip behind cover and pop overshield, but you take grenade damage and it only got to apply 25% of the overshield before you took damage. You could still pop it to keep the enemy from getting it. Use it or lose it type of play.

The activation in the trailer looked like it a about a 2.5 second animation so if you try to pop it mid fight you may just die and waste it. It would be dumb to go back to the invincible while its activating type way so I bet it will be closer to H5s animation.

Your wish will be coming true looks like.

It looks like to balance it they have increased the amount of time it takes to use it and also did what you’re suggesting. If you watch the overview trailer you can see at one part that a guy has a little trail following him, showing you he has OS.

For those who really want a deep dive into the intricacies of what we’ve seen so far on power ups and other aspects in general that some might have missed (shooting a gun while holding the flag, for example), Shyway’s YouTube channel has excellent content. The first bit of this video (1:30) talks about power ups specifically.

They look like they are being handled well, I hope we have options to tweak them a fair bit for custom games and even the option of old instant activation on touch style ones too.

I wonder if we will get any new power ups too?

For overshield it probably slowly fills the shield bar instead of immediately filling it.

It does look like the activation time of using overshield or camouflage takes a fair bit of time, probably enough to where if you activate it in the middle of the fight and the opponent is still landing shots on you you’ll die before the activation is finished. Hard to say whether it’s visible when you’re carrying it around although some more eagle eyed than myself say they see a small yellow trail. It seems like most equipment will be somewhat visible on your person. Stuff like the Grappleshot and the Repulsor shield appear attached to the character’s left arm. I’m sure 343 has thought about most of this stuff, although the only way we’ll know for sure is when we get to play the game.

You…you do know they said that you can see what players have when they pick it up, right?

Did you watch any of the videos that have come out talking about the footage given? Doesn’t seem like it.

How to effectively use overshields to save yourself mid-fight:
Suppress enemy contact while moving to a position of cover, be prepared to avoid grenades, activate overshield, return to fight. Be aware of your surroundings, you might get a beatdown from behind.

Anyone who tries to use overshields will be stripping themselves of their ability to do the most important thing when taking enemy fire: RETURN FIRE.

I think a 4-5 second animation of these can balance it

How old do you have to be, to be this unnecessarily mean on a Halo forum?

You…you do know you’re on a Halo forum, right?

i like this idea, the os should act more like adding extra shield instead of just giving a set amount that way it could balance out the frustration and stop it form being too useful in the middle of a gun fight. i suppose we’ll see how much it effects the gameplay experience and if worst come to worst it could always be taken out of the map

Thank you, I never noticed that. I’m glad they did that, cause that is really gonna make it fun to fight the people with overshield

I had not. I watched Hidden Xperia’s videos on it, Uber Nick’s, Late Night Gaming’s, Greenskull’s, and Favyn’s. I’m currently watching The Vengeful Vadam’s, but didn’t hear anyone talk about this

Definitely increasing the activation time window if it isn’t long enough already will make it feel like less of a trump card in the heat of a fight. I’d like to see it in action for now though.

In fact it has been increased. I’m watching the video that TheFryGuy linked above, and it shows that it was increased from Halo 5’s from 1.02 seconds to 1.34
