Overall Impressions - Likes and Dislikes

Overall, I am more impressed with this game than I anticipated. Even with the trailers I was still skeptical, because it LOOKS very Halo 5 like. However, after playing for a bit… I give about a 6/10.

  • Base movement speed is good - Jumping feels more like classic halo - Sprint isn’t too fast - As someone who doesn’t like sprint, I feel like I can easily play just not using it, with little to no disadvantage for choosing that play style. - AR + Magnum are PERFECTLY balanced imo. Don’t touch or nerf these. - Bots are okay. Sometimes they actually surprise me, but other times they are straight dumb. - Melee is super nice with good distance.Dislikes:

  • Heatwave and Pulse Carbine are trash. Looks cool in a trailer, but sucks in the actual game. - Plasma Grenades need a more “flarey” look and maybe a little bigger, like Halo 3. Doesn’t feel as satisfying to use and see. - Challenges should be able to be on the side of my screen in-game, so I can track my progress live while playing. Obviously with the ability to toggle these on or off your HUD. - Should still be able to shoot while clambering over walls and ledges. Otherwise, I would rather no clamber at all. Either get rid of it, or don’t hinder my ability to battle. - I feel like someone in the creative department is trying TOO hard to make the AI “Funny and quirky xD”. Kind of comes of cringe sometimes, although I appreciate the direction towards the subtle humor Halo can have. I just feel like this is a miss and feels like pandering tbh. If you want humor, just have our spartans say funny stuff during battles, like how grunts and marines do in classic Halos. AI’s I think should be more cold, sober and strictly informative. - Academy, is kind of cool. Feels silly having to back out/restart new drills just to try different weapons. It would be cooler if there was a drill option where you have an armory with shooting range you can select from in game. Also some in-game “button/lever” to start and stop bots on the range. This way, you could also easily compare weapons too. - I don’t like that you can buy through levels with credits in battle pass. I also don’t like XP boosters. I would be okay with boosters, if maybe players could only get these at random and not be able to straight purchase them. - In the “Armor Hall” I don’t like how helmet and visor have the same icon of just a spartans head. Not very UX intuitive at the glance. Actually would prefer if instead of the spartan soldier for the tile, it was just a flat UI icon like chest and stuff currently is. - One thing I dislike about the “customization” in general, is really the art style of the armor. I know this is a big change to ask for now, but something to consider in the future. Sort of also had this issue with Reach. Sometimes the armor feels the same, but also not the same. Enough to where when I play a game, I hardly notice other players specific armor pieces - just their colors and occasionally helmet. It just feels like Halo 3 had more exotic looking armor that made each character not only look unique, but gave off a unique sense of personality. Spartans look more like generic soldiers than they do super hero’s.

Sprint is completely useless in-game right now.

  • Not really faster - You’ll appear on the motion tracker - Can’t immediately shoot back - The only pro is that you can slideShield recharge during sprint btw (as opposed to Halo 5) but you don’t need to sprint in this Tech Preview :).

Sprint has been dialed back to make walking more viable : halo (reddit.com)

Dialing sprint back is a good thing
Its not a tactical decision instead of being forced upon the player if they don’t want to be at a disadvantage

I like that I’m not forced to use sprint and that I can choose when and when not to use it
IMO as someone who doesn’t like the adbanced movement halo games this feels to me a good balance

I used to be for sprinting staying but this tech preview really makes me think it should just be eliminated. It would also free up another button on the controller for tagging as up on the d pad is a terrible location for something you’re supposed to be able to do quickly.

I agree 100%. Sprint in its current form is completely useless and only blocks a button better used for tagging etc.

Maybe this was their plan all along (TINFOIL HAT TIME)!!! Add a useless version of sprint, then remove it, nobody cries

I don’t think dialing back is the right term for this “faster walk”. I would go even so far in calling people who sprint (in this current version) dummies because it only makes you a tiny bit faster but you’ll appear on the motion sensor and can’t shoot back instantly. Maybe it’s good for running away around a corner like a coward or power sliding into vents or smth
