People are spending money on XP boosts to increase their payout from challenges.
Yet some challenges are impossible on the given maps or gametypes encountered within the hour the boost is active.
Therefore people are literally wasting their money. This needs reviewing as it’s a frustrating experience for the players of your game.
I had a final weekly challenge to complete (to then activate the capstone challenge) which was to kill a Spartan with a fusion core. I applied an XP boost and started playing but didn’t get a single map in the whole hour that had a fusion core on it.
So there’s a solid theory going round the forums that if you require a specific game mode/map for a challenge, that mode/map has a drastically lowered chance of occurring. Could be a bug or another piece of predatory design in order for you to think “screw this I’ll buy level up’s instead”
It sucks that you weren’t able to progress in your challenge for over an hour. However…

Why on Earth would you apply an XP boost for a single challenge like getting a kill with a Fusion Core? Even if the map was full of them, that’s still not an easy challenge to get depending on the other person.
I’m not going to say this is true, but I personally have felt this could be a possibility. It’s ironic that I’m just now coming across this, as I had the challenge to get 3 kills with fusion cores yesterday, and I played multiple BTB matches before coming across one of the two maps that have them.
It may be easy for them and that’s why they chose to spend the XP boost in it. I found it more difficult getting into a match that offered fusion cores, than actually getting kills with them. I used an XP boost because I had to “play a match of Oddball” and “play 4 ranked matches”. Seemed easy enough to play 4 matches in an hour, so I’d be knocking out multiple challenges at the same time while my XP boost was active. I completed the 4 ranked matches and received my 2XP for that, but I never got an Oddball match for the entire hour my XP boost was active.
I don’t know if it’s true, and don’t have a way to prove it other than my own experience, but that’s exactly what happened to me with a few of my challenges last week.
I. Had some slayer ones early on that it didn’t seem to be an issue, but when I got more challeneges done, then when slayer and CTF came up later in the week those game modes would not appear after playing many games regardless of the playlist I chose
I just think a lot of confirmation bias may be going on. People are just so more aware of gametypes they do or don’t get when they are hoping to see them.
The first week, I had the challenge to kill 3 enemies with fusion coils. and I was thinking well this should be easy in BTB I have a 1 in 3 chance of getting fragmentation, but no frag dropped once in three hours of game play I got one within the first hour then then a second kill on day two of hunting this challenge the next whole day of play nothing, not one map had a coil in it I tried BTB and only got high power and dead lock for like 8-10 games. then I went into arena hoping for launch site, 20+ games later I got it, got my kill and it didn’t track it, after that I almost snapped my V.2 elite controller in half. I immediately swapped out the challenge.
its not by coincidence that this is the first Halo game to randomize all maps and gamemodes, then tie all progression to challenges that can only be completed under specific conditions.
if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, its probably a duck.
As far as I’m concerned, the XP boost are from the battle pass, and they weren’t purchased individually. And as far as the OP, they stated purchasing was a “waste of money.” I 100% agree with you both. The sad part is the ignorance of those who purchase them, or give money to be purchased.
That still makes zero sense. Why not use an XP booster when you’ve got a huge bank of challenges and daily challenges so that you can maximize your XP gain? Using a booster for a single challenge, even if you still have leftover daily rewards, is stupid. In fact, it’s something I would expect a drunk person to do out of impulse.
