I feel like it ruins the immersion, I miss RvB
Yepp, outlines have to be the worst thing I’ve ever seen come to Halo. Those coupled with the bright colors when taking damage instead of gold electricity really make this game look way too cartoony and kills it for me. Sprint, slides, and ledge grabs are also terrible and never should’ve been added, but kids will be kids…
I think it’s fine, I never played multiplayer for immersion and it lets people use all those color combos 343 is adding so in my opinion it’s perfectly fine, I see absolutely no issue with it.
having a red colored teammate while the things you supposed to shoot have red outlines…that is rather not exactly clear and makes it really bad to play. Sure they want to have players show off the customizations, but its completely against a good gameplay feel.
I don’t know about you but having things only be red or blue absolutely prevented immersion for me. I personally like the outlines, just gotta find colors that work for you.
I’ve played Halo since original release; and honestly I understand where you are coming from. RvB classic, simple, and still allowed customization with a sense of team uniformity. On the same tone, I also understand the decision to try to modernize. I like it but there could be classic style game modes introduced which would be a middle ground I feel.
I find its constantly making me pause and take a second to identify friend or foe, which is ironic considering what the system is supposed to be. I keep seeing blue enemies and red teammates. I shouldn’t have to change colors in order to instantly identify teams. I really hope we can get a regular color vs. color option in the full release, if not in future flights.
As far as immersion goes, appearance wise it looks like I’ve got visr or promethean vision on at all times and feels out of place.
Outlines are alright IMO we just options to disable them or at most change opacity, or have an option to switch to a red arrow/nametag being over their head like in previous games. Outlines only for friendlies would make the most sense considering that would realistically be the only people you know aren’t enemies.

They got rid of it so that you could actually see your Spartan’s colors within an actual MP game. I always found it annoying that my color scheme was limited to two separate colors that I’m not fond of. Its not the end of the world that the outlines are there because they do their job, let you know when NOT to shoot the person in front of you. The current version we are playing is in an old build, so we should expect the graphics to need a little tweaking. They shield system they made was to make it clear what part of the body you were hitting. Its always been a little difficult being able to tell if you are actually hitting a headshot, this helps make it clear. I’m sure that if enough people complain they will switch it to the electrical shield style but find some way to still make it clear where you are hitting. Its possible they already have done it in the current build that isn’t being used in the flight. As far as sprint, slide, and ledge grab, Sprint speed has been tweaked to hardly be faster than walk, being there to mostly just prevent the feeling of slug-like speed in Halo 3, the switch from sprint to shooting is also very fast so it has very little effect on your response time. All in all, sprint is mostly just there to make new people more comfortable and make combat feel faster and more active. Slide is not very important and has little impact, I feel like it was added for the singular purpose of making new people more comfortable rather than bunny hops, which achieve the exact same thing in descending steep terrain quickly and actually make you about as hard to keep track of as sliding. As far as clamber, THAT is something worth worrying about, but they needed it to make people feel like combat wasn’t as one-dimensional. Part of the problem is that OG players don’t want combat to ever change in Halo, but if 343 did that, they would have to stick with the same playerbase. To get new players they have to add either new or simply suitable additions. Clamber is needed to make newer players feel like combat is better than: “whoever has the best aim wins”. In the FPS industry movement is becoming increasingly more important. 343 has made two of these additions matter little to please both parties, but there was no way to soften clamber. All in all I think it isn’t really that important because 343 has still found a way to make 2/3 additions suitable for both parties, which is pretty impressive in my opinion. Most of the graphics related problems you are speaking of will likely be fixed by launch or be minor things to worry about. The movement ones will never change though, you don’t have to accept my opinion, but you do have to accept that the chances of 343 magically returning to classical movement are about as low as possible. The only choices you have are to either accept that the past is gone or you can simply refuse to play and play Halo 3 instead.
Just my opinion, but I hope you at least consider it.

But your teammates are CLEARLY outlined in whatever colour you chose. So I’m not sure how it’s not clear.

Its not so clear when a teammate with a red coating comes sprinting or jumping from behind when you’ve got red as your enemy color.
As a colorblind citizen, the colored outlines and being able to change them to whatever color you want is the best change I’ve seen too halo in a long time.

This is the main argument I keep seeing against this system yet I’ve never had a single problem identifying enemies, do you guys just have poor eyesight or something?

The blue of the armor coating is what I’m noticing in an instant, followed by the outline. That’s also on top of it looking bad IMO. This is why I’m in favor of it being an option, not scrapping the system. Some people like it, others like myself find it inferior, and ugly.
So I just tried green enemies and yellow team, and it is more noticeable than red and blue outlines. So now it gets the job done, but while still looking worse than in previous games.
Something I am surprised hasn’t been brought up is; does this mean games with 3 or more teams are dead? There is only the option to recolour “Enemies” and “Friendlies” (and Fireteam), with no distinction between what team the enemy is on. The Friend vs Foe system only really works if there is only 2 teams…
I hardly even notice the outlines. When I have teammates in that dark blue coating I occasionally find myself shooting at them when they suddenly appear.
I wish there was atleast a setting to turn it off if you desire to. You can disable the hud even though that puts you at a disadvantage so that shouldn’t be a reason to not add the option. At the very least adding black and white as color options for it or adding an opacity setting or something, just giving more choice to the players you know?

Totally agree. Would like to have an option to switch to RvB.

It would be a relatively easy change to make too. It could set an armor coating to the player matching their color to their team. It was an interesting test, but I don’t think the outline has passed by any stretch of the means.
I’m honestly not having as much of an issue with the outlines as I thought I would. Aside from a couple instances, having the outlines set to the colors I want has been fine. I do think there should be a toggle for players to see teammates or enemies armor as colors rather than outlines though for those who prefer the classic way more. But I think its a fine feature.
