Outlines and Accessibility

Based on communications so far, I get the feeling that keeping the outlines is a hill that 343i will die on, but I’ll voice my opinion anyways.

I think it’s great that 343i is putting in the effort to improve accessibility and I hope they continue to improve upon it. I love that we can choose the color of friendly and enemy outlines and there are plenty of options available.

What I cannot gel with is the outline system. The glowing color makes it tough to see the status of shields while in gun fights. H3 and Reach did this really well. You could easily, visibly see the state of player’s shields. The added shield pop sound in Reach was the icing on top. I find it even more difficult to see enemy players with a glowing outline who are sitting in a stronghold zone that is glowing the same color. Or a group of enemies that are bunched together. It all becomes one giant glowy mess that is tough to distinguish.

Would it be possible to retain the friendly/enemy team color selection, but also have an option to select solid colors rather than the outlines? This would be more visible and accessible than the outline glow. Again, this will probably get brushed off for the sake of cosmetics monetization, but I think it would only help accessibility. The pre-game and end-game cutscenes show off individuality enough that gameplay does not have to suffer. Even so, what I’m proposing is an option with it deselected by default.

I 100% agree. I want Red vs Blue again. The outlines are great to have for people who want/need to use them. But for me they just clutter up the screen too much and give me a headache. 343, just let me play RvB like I have been for the last 2 decades.

Are you referring to the damage glow when a player is hit, I hated it in first flight but I’m really enjoying it now.

There’s a compromise with this. Just allow us to choose the enemy and ally colour instead of red vs blue and ditch the outline idea.

I’ll add that the improvements they made to the damage glow from first flight to second flight is better, but it’s only lipstick on the pig. Solid colors would easily be more visible than a jumbled glowing mess. That might not be the same for everyone though which is why I suggested making it an option.

Also good that they made overshield white glow in the second flight. It looks like garbage imo but at least now you can see that someone popped OV.

I believe that the glowing shield outline is a good touch for a more refurbished Halo experience. I agree on the issue with the coloring of the shields vs. the color of a stronghold; so perhaps an accessibility option for coloring of hostile and allied game units (ie: flags, oddballs, bombs, strongholds, etc…). Furthermore; I think that the shield pop in Infinite is present, perhaps you have not noticed it? Personally I am greatly enjoying the visuals, but whole-heartedly agree on your strongholds predicament. As for the group of enemies; maybe an option in accessibility to alter the glow strength of enemy and friendly Spartans, and even a legacy option – seen in MCC for weapon skins and visors – which can bring back red v blue. I don’t know how technically possible that would be, but an idea to start on at that.

there’s been plenty of times I thought someone’s shields were almost busted because they were the same colour as their team, and it makes them look like their shields are almost glowing.
there’s also been plenty of times I’ve ran past a blue player thinking they were on my team because I didn’t really see the outline while I was clambering up something to be killed by them moments later.

I realize they did this to improve visibility but all it seems is it’s making me confused half the time

I’d be cool with this. The outline gave me a headache. I actually turned enemy names on and friendly names off, and that’s how I was distinguishing between enemy and friendly.

Now to get rid of the damn outline.

I would like them to separate the color of the outline and the shield. Bringing back the classic shield color or your own color preference, with outline color option. I think that would be great, in my opinion.

I just want teammates to have the outline not enemies, plain and simple. No point in having the enemies outline, also it’s kinda not far I spotted some enemies that tbh if I didn’t have the outline I would have never seen them because they were sneaking around the map, and tbh that shouldn’t happen. Let people sneak around and try to ambush me Or however. Smh this outline thing isn’t the worst thing but I think they can fix it a bit

I don’t want RvB anymore. It’s an outdated take on how to do teams, but the player outlines are worse. This game is going to make it’s money off player customization, yet I can’t tell what anyone is wearing because of this big nasty outline on them. Not to mention how terrible it looks when your teammates are in the same vehicle as you.

Every shooter out there simply has a red or blue gamertag over the players’ heads, why did 343 have to make such a weird decision here?
