Other functions of the Boltshot

Before I start a thread/discussion about this, I am trying to remain positive and help people, not draw out people who hate this weapon due to it obviously being a ‘pocket shotgun’. 343 put this weapon in the game for legitimate reasons outside the crawlers and watchers using it in the Campaign and Spartan Ops, and I believe I have found those reasons. Outside of it’s charged shot, I have heard people call this the weakest weapon in the game with virturally no other functionally.

Truth is, I have found at least two legit functions with this weapon, neither of which requires charging it  , just regular shooting. I have heard a lot of players that want to master their assistant commedation for the Sunspot visor. If utilized properly (Team Objective for Oddball, or Capture the Flag are the best examples of game variants for this), this weapon is such a great way to get assists without harming your K/D ratio if you are concerned about it. Being close to at least two other players with weapons, and firing at the same enemy with it works well for gaining assists. Just keep a more powerful weapon with you incase an entire team decides to storm you and your team at once.

Also, this weapon is great for getting headshot kills. Just like the magnum, you can get headshot kills with this weapon, and this can be done in just about any game variant, although utilizing the Boltshot this way seems to work the best in Oddball and Regicide. I have never really seen other players up to the point of posting this utilize the boltshot this way, but I have numerous times myself. Once again, you just have to support your following teammates nearby.

Yes, as of this post, my Boltshot commedation is at 5 of 7 and when I started using it, I utilized it for close combat as a ‘pocket shotgun’, but I eventually started using it as support, with the occasional charge kill. I hope this post helps people who are trying to either A.) get more headshot kills or B.) master their assistant commedation.

Naturally, people will have their opinion of the weapon and they’re entitled to it, and those who use it for the simple case of easy kills via charging up the shot will continue to utilize it for such a purpose. No point in arguing about those two aspects. I am posting this to help people who want to either use the gun in a normal firing fashion or even people who want to work on commedations.

I hope this helps out people and enjoy

Hey there,

Interesting thoughts. However, in my experience the headshot and assistant commendations are some of the quickest to max out! If you’re a regular user of the Assault Rifle, Storm Rifle, Suppressor, frags or Pulse Grenade, then you are probably already getting assists in a 2:1 ratio to actual kills in most 4v4 and FFA games. And headshots are dime-a-dozen in BTB and especially in SWAT.

I actually really like the Boltshot and although I don’t abuse it, I do find it a very useful tool to get out of some sticky situations, and what’s more I’m really feeling the nerf it received recently. So many one-shot-kill situations have now become “took off his shield, still need to empty a third of a clip of AR ammo into him to get the kill”.

As an actual shooting weapon I think it’s unreliable at best. Shallow clip, inaccurate, and not hitscan. Or does anybody have good techniques for using it offensively?

Actually there has not been a “hit scan” weapon since the Halo 2 BR.

All the noise goes to the overcharge.

I think the bolt shot is close to par with the pistol at close and medium range. I hardly ever see it used that way, but I’m a big fan. Alway fun to hear the other player rage when I kill them with the bolt shot but without the overcharge

Actually, bungie brought back hitscan with halo Reach. Most precision weapons if not all are hitscan now I believe.

But yeah, the boltshot is very versatile outside of people using its secondary fire. I generally don’t like this weapon because of this ability, but I can’t help but facepalm when I see someone charging up a second shot to kill someone who they could have easily just got a headshot on. I really wish that the main fire mode was just a little bit stronger. I’d use that as my main secondary weapon if I didn’t have to reload after putting a full magazine into someone to kill them.
