Ordnance is -so close- to being competitive.

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of competitive people are willing to embrace change as it hits them, and find new ways to use new mechanics for more interesting and diverse gameplay.

Ordnance has the capability to be an aspect of competitive play, with a few small adjustments.

Firstly, we should be able to decide what people are given the option to choose between. Having randomness reduces competitiveness, and in our custom gametypes we want to be able to change it so that Ordnance can give 3 clear options, consistently. For example people will be given the option of taking Camo, Speedboost or Overshield for every ordnance.

Secondly, we should be able to make only kills count towards the ordnance bar, instead of medals and assists also.

And there you have it, a useable ordnance system for competitive play, which is not only predictable and controllable, but rewards teams for teamwork and individual skill. The 3 drops will also be predictable, and suit a range of roles and playing styles.

If you add these options into the customization settings, you will see competitive Halo 4 be more diverse, and similar to the default game.

Its still a kill-streak in the way you described it, just a less random kill streak. You cant have kill rewards in a competitive shooter, at the top level they would be abused to no end and dictate the flow of the game.

The only way I see Ordinance being competitive is to have them drop in fixed locations like traditional Halo. Every time you get a ordinance drop, have the pods not open for 20 seconds to allow all players on both teams to contest it. The pods would drop in fixed power weapon locations to wherever you are closest to. So if you’re in Hut on Sanctuary the power item would drop where the sniper traditionally spawns, the pod opening in 20-30 seconds.

This way you still get to “choose” your power item, and you can make the best choice in which power item will best help your team adding strategy, without the randomness of where the pods are going to drop and when.

I disagree:

  1. I don’t want to be just rewarded for kills, I want to be rewarded for everything I do that helps the team and that includes assists and distractions. Also I like the idea of some kills being more worth while than others such as headshots and assassinations.
  2. I dont want the choice of just 3 powerups, I like the fact that I can choose between weapons and/or power ups and possibly chaining them if I do well enough.
