Ordnance Drops for the whole team?

Right, I’m waiting for SpOps to download, so I’ll take this time to propose an idea.

Ordnance drops have been met with mixed reactions, and I understand both sides of the argument. I propose that in team games, the ordnance meter should be filled up not just by your actions, but by the actions of the whole team. As for the drop itself, I am going to take some ideas from puts on light flame suit Halo Reach!

Specifically, Halo Reach’s Invasion Slayer. I had mixed experiences with that gametype, but I always loved the frantic struggle once a territory was captured, to kill everyone before the weapons spawned.

So, here’s how it works. Once the ordnance meter is full, some (maybe all, depending on team size, maybe those who contributed most) members of the team gets a vote. They each vote on a weapon or maybe even vehicle they want included in the drop. One member also gets a choice of where the drop will be made (in set choices on the map, so it isn’t to easy.) Every player in the game then sees the countdown (30 seconds or so) above the drop point, similar to invasion slayer. After that time, the stuff drops and whoever is still alive can collect it.

I like this because it does reward you and the team for performing well, like current ordnance, but you still have to work for it and while you have the upper hand, a well coordinated team could take it away from you. Thoughts?

Other ideas:

  • Vehicles as ordnance for big team games. Like invasion slayer, could be interesting.
  • Ordnance in objective: This is only awarded for actually doing the damn objective, so if your team caps a flag, every gets ordnance or something. Hopefully this would promote more objective gameplay rather than kill farming.
  • More “basic” options: Many times I am faced with options like Sticky detonator, Pulse grenades or Speed Boost, and I just think to myself “I’d rather have more ammo for my BR”. I think it would be pretty cool to include basic items like ammo crates, or every weapon and grenade in your chosen loadout (replace grenades with this option, nobody chooses them). Maybe even throw in some armour abilities so you can swap out without having to kill yourself.

The problem with team based votes and ordinance is that the teams need to be coordinated. Most players focus on themselves, not the team, and likely will play, get ordinance and choose something that benefits them, over what benefits the team. Plus it would cause mayhem as one player chooses where the ordinance goes, what if that player is surrounded and calls it in behind the enemy line? I think personal ordinance is the best we’re going to get.

If teams were more coordinated then I would love this idea, but with more refinements etc.
